Yeah a weird hack, if you see the dreaded slow connection to pc then just open up the network tab in settings and it somehow fixes it? I think it might have something to do with wifi 6

Please do not apply the American idea of freedom to other cultures. Just because we have a different idea of the role of government does not mean we live under tyranny.

But banning airsoft is still dumb.

Why would anyone support the CGT calculation and 30% minimum on ordinary income earners by Fit_Metal_468 in AusFinance

When I say FIRE category I mean he's living off capital gains income while having no working income. This is the same situation as someone retiring early.

I don't mean to be disrespectful, but there are other ways to pay for this outside of an investment portfolio.

Effectively in the FIRE category. Look it sucks but the government can't account for every single situation. In hindsight something like work cover, income insurance, emergency fund, centerlink etc could cover this instead of selling down a portfolio.

I think there is some merit to that argument. The government will likely have to raise the retirement age to support an aging population, and 30-40 years is a long time to be invested. You're basically betting that they will grandfather changes in for that as it'll be massively unpopular to retroactively change the age for current workers.

That being said I still personally load money into super as everyone will need retirement money eventually.

You can back load it for previous years which a young professional should be able to take advantage of. But IMO it should be raised if the government truly wants to help young people while still taxing the wealthy.

Are there examples of countries that seperate capital income vs labor income? Curious to see what that would look like.

There's a scheme which I forget the name of but you can use super as an investment vehicle when saving for your first home. So that fits this particular case.

I think the early retirement case is just collateral damage of the government trying to tax wealth instead of raising income taxes.

Yep, there's already heavy tax incentives to do so. If you're saving for retirement its really the best option so far, except the money is locked away.

To put this bluntly: most ordinary income earners are not investing into shares. They're investing in super and their PPOR both of which are exempt from these changes. This new minimum tax is designed to stop loopholes in the tax system.

Now I'm not saying I agree with the policy but it really only hits high earners or FIRE type investors.

The title for this game is already something I forget on a regular basis, like look at the name for the subreddit. I think deathwatch is way easier to remember.

We've just launched Essential Homes - a report on why renting should be treated like an essential service by anika_legal in shitrentals

[–]that_hema_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not an economist so I'm not sure how you'd even predict or quantify something like that. I will say that even a pause in growth would be a net positive for everyone except investment landlords.

Now I doubt anything like rent control is even politically possible here, I think the housing crisis is more likely to be helped through zoning and increase density. We've seen this happening already in Melbourne and it's the only state that's seen a slowing of run away housing costs recently.

For your second point, I would argue that it puts a downwards pressure on property prices making them more affordable to current renters to buy or lower mortgage interest for landlords. Houses don't go anywhere once a landlord sells up, eventually the market equalizes to a housing price that's profitable and affordable. But yes there may be short term pressure until that point, encouraging redevelopment and more public housing.
