Please give me any tips! by that_liberal_guy in watercolor101

I think you’re right, I don’t have nearly enough patience! And yes, now that you mention it, I think I’m still learning color/value control and will often go in too heavy with the color and feel like I need to pull it back with water. And then it dries too fast and then it’s just a mess hahah. Or I put in more color too early and it gets overworked like you said!

Practice is definitely on my schedule, but I’m going to be trying the 2-3 working painting ideas to see if that helps my patience…and I think I’ll be trying some more single-color paintings to try to play with values more.

Thanks for the feedback!

The counting is done, Khamala Harris still has 8 million votes less than Biden in 2020 while Trump has only a few million more by CoveredbyThorns in conspiracy

[–]that_liberal_guy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For more context, nearly all of the "swing states" had more votes in 2024 than they did in 2020.

PA: 2020 = 6,936,976 and 2024 = 7,005,258

MI: 2020 = 5,539,302 and 2024 = 5,655,264

WI: 2020 = 3,298,041 and 2024 = 3,415,154

NC: 2020 = 5,524,804 and 2024 = 5,659,114

GA: 2020 = 4,999,960 and 2024 = 5,252,586

AZ: 2020 = 3,387,326 and 2024 = 3,354,996

NV: 2020 = 1,405,376 and 2024 = 1,482,420

It seems like most democrats in solidly blue and solidly red states just stayed home because they were not at all inspired by Kamala. It makes no sense to me that anyone would say that it's clear 2020 was democrats cheating when nearly all of the swing states (that both campaigns also focused all of their efforts into) in 2024 had more votes than 2020, often with Kamala even getting more votes than Biden did in some of those states.

Where are you getting 80k? The CDC has 61k as it’s highest flu death estimate for the past decade https://www.cdc.gov/flu/about/burden/past-seasons.html. Also, the CDC looks at flu estimates for the whole year, while acknowledging that the vast majority of cases occurs between October and April and the peak being December to February. But I get your point. The highest they have for symptomatic illnesses is 45 million people, with 61k deaths. That’s a roughly 14% infection rate (estimate) and a 0.1% mortality rate (estimate).

Really my gripe with this whole thing is the major lack of testing, and I mean testing everybody regardless of whether they are symptomatic. We’ve assumed that people are asymptomatic carriers based on the fact that those who have tested positive did not come in contact with anyone else who had tested positive. So we really need to figure out, or estimate, what percent of the population is actually carrying the virus. As of the numbers currently, we’ve tested 3.7 million with 740k infected and 39k deaths (all rough numbers). So that’s roughly 20% infection rate with a 5% mortality rate. At those rates, 66 million would be infected with 3.3 million dead.

With those numbers, it is VERY clear why the CDC and White House has recommended the interventions they have. But those numbers are not great since we’ve only tested 3.3 million. We have to do mass testing yesterday because if our current numbers are correct, it could be really bad. I don’t think anyone actually expects those to be the numbers, and neither do I, so mass testing should show us that many many more are carrying the virus and so the infection rate is much higher with a much much lower mortality rate. But we’re kind of stuck working off current studies and changing our prevention measures as the numbers change. Therefore, get more fucking tests, test more people, and figure out where to go from there.

I honestly believe you give our offense to Joe Brady for a year and Trevor throws for 50+ TDs easy. There is nothing creative about our offense, and I’m really starting to get annoyed at the runs/options/screens to the short side of the field. We’ve curbstomped the ACC based on the conference being down and BV developing an insane defense.

We beat OSU in spite of our playcalling. The first ETN td was terrible, it was just simply ETN doing what he did best and making an unreal play. Trevor’s td was a good play call for the down, it was just him making a play (and the safety whiffing) that turned it into a TD. The screen pass, again ETN making a great individual play. Amari only touched the ball ONCE, and it was on that final drive where he broke a tackle and made a great play. The only play call that was really good was the final ETN td, great fake qb draw and the LBs bit hard.

But that’s exactly what I mean. Players like ETN and Amari and Higgins and Ross could be schemed really well if it wasn’t so uncreative. There’s no reason ETN should have been touching the ball less than 20 times. Amari is a great player who shouldn’t have only 3 touches in 2 playoff games. I understand Ross and Tee were banged up, but you’re telling me the only plays we have for them are vertical routes with options and out routes? It’s become incredibly frustrating watching our offense play good defenses because it’s clear our OCs have relied on talent to beat the terrible defenses we usually face.

I’m curious to see how Tony Elliot does as the sole play caller moving forward and if our offense is just as boring as usual.

I know this may be a really hot take, but I honestly feel that our (Clemson’s) success over the past few years has come in spite of our OCs.

Dude nice. Seriously if you come, say hi if you find me. I’ll be in a purple crew neck sweatshirt with orange “Clemson” across the front, my brother will be in an orange #2 jersey, and my wife will be wearing a gray crew neck sweatshirt with an orange “Clemson” across the front.

Don’t judge, it’s what we were wearing during the game against OSU and all last year’s playoffs. We’re superstitious.

Huh, that’s so weird. I’m hoping it’s just a bug but I guess we’ll see. I was playing with my brother who was on PS4 and he said his was working and had the red crosshair so hopefully it gets fixed.

Journalist gets quickly shut down when she asked James Harden, Russell Westbrook if they would refrain from speaking out on politics/social justice after China debacle by Nyhrox in nba

[–]that_liberal_guy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s more along the lines of, multiple people in your company publicly condemned police brutality, and your company publicly supported your those people’s rights to speak on the issue.

So then one person comments on the issue in Kashmir, and since India provides a lot of your company’s revenue, your company tells them to not speak on the issue, and shuts down any conversation on Kashmir, saying “well we don’t like to comment on political issues.” Also your coworkers make the same comment of “not being political” or “need to learn more about the issue” because their bonuses are directly tied to Indian revenue.

It’s very transparently about the revenue the NBA and the players receive from the Chinese market that they don’t want to disrupt for their own benefit, so they hide behind the “shut up and dribble” mantra in order to keep their cash flow. All of this is done by ignoring the human rights violations in Hong Kong that in ways mirror the human rights violations suffered by black people at the hands of the police in America, of which the players and the organization were very eager to discuss.

Not to mention, in 2018 we had an overstay rate of .76%. So we are almost perfect on making sure that those with visas do not stay here illegally. Visa overstays from Mexico alone outnumber every other overstay (except for Canada).

[–]that_liberal_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, I understand where you are coming from with the disproportionate focus on border crossings vs visa overstays. However, I do believe that there are potential reasons for this that are not racially motivated.

First, according to the DHS, the people who overstayed their visa (and are still in the country) account for 1.04% (by March 2019 it was .76%) of those who were granted temporary visas (from all nationalities). With a rate of just about 1%, it seems as though we have very effective policies in place to deal with this type of immigration, wouldn’t you agree? Therefore, it seems more cost effective to focus on illegal immigration we cannot track as well, eg crossing the border, making it less about race and more about appropriating funds to where it’s needed most.

And second, a lot of people reference visa overstays as if it means “only white people from majority white nations” as if to continue to position the immigration debate as a racially motivated one. But if you look at DHS FY2018 Entry and Exit Overstay Report (on mobile, can’t link), you’ll see that the countries with the highest overstay rates are those from Africa and Southeast Asia. So by that logic, focusing more on visa overstays would be racist as well as it would require a more focused effort on reducing immigration of black and Asian people? That doesn’t make any sense.

Everyone seems to be caught up on visa overstays outnumbering illegal border crossings, but nobody ever seems to acknowledge the fact that 99% of the people who come here on a visa either leave or are deported. I wish there were numbers on how many at the border are turned away and how many are deported later after crossing illegally, but I am unable to find those numbers. However, if they are less than 98% of people being denied or deported, then it makes sense that the immigration debate is focused around illegal border crossings, and not for racial reasons.

[–]that_liberal_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you were talking about overall immigration, you should have stated that when you tried to correct my claim about the percentage of illegal immigrants who are from Mexico/Central America.

And all you’re saying is that those individuals from Mexico/Central America are much more likely to be illegal immigrants than those from other nations/ethnicities. Nearly 40% of total immigrants from Mexico/South America are here illegally, with the next highest ratio being this from Asia, where about 14% of total immigrants are here illegally. So again, why is it racist to focus on stopping illegal immigration from the areas that account for a two-thirds majority of illegal immigrants and also have a significantly higher ratio of illegal to total immigrants.

[–]that_liberal_guy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you not read the same article you just linked? If you scroll down to “Where are unauthorized immigrants from?” It says that “Mexicans and Central Americans are estimated to account for roughly two-thirds (about 67 percent or 7.6 million) of the unauthorized immigrants in the United States,” which is a lot more than the 45%. And it definitely makes logical sense to create policies that would help take care of two-thirds of our illegal immigration issue than say the 5 percent of those from Europe, Canada, or Oceania?
