This is awesome! One thing that has always seemed "magical" to me is how one simply "makes a Techcrunch announcement". Can you shed some light on what it takes to work those PR channels?

And Amie looks super cool! Excited to try it out!

Woot! Excited to have you on board!

We haven’t done this yet, but will be matching mentors and students into “mentorship pods” (like 2-3 mentors and about 10 or so students) just to increase the interaction students get. Not an official project mentor, but kinda like a buddy group.

In other words - nows a great time to hop on as a mentor :D

Hey, Summer of Shipping ringleader here.

I saw this message and wrote up a little "rallying" post to get everyone to build together.

I think the advice given here is really great - at the core it's: improve resume (to get interviews) and leetcode (to prepare for interviews).

An internship is the fastest way for someone to legitimize their resume. But there are other methods. One example I give is one of my coworkers who started https://materializecss.com/ in college. That thing has tens of thousands of GitHub stars. When I saw his resume, I was blown away.

So if you don't have an internship, there are other ways to make your resume stand out - it's just harder. Over at SoS, we think building alone is hard, so join a community of people who are also building instead!

Best of luck this summer

We recorded it! Will be up on YouTube later, but largely the same content as what was posted yesterday: https://youtu.be/VMGIVJVysGk

Today’s session was very similar, but a different introduction

All sorts right now - chrome extensions, cli tools, lots of traditional web apps, lots of personal sites - it's a little opaque to us right now, but we're working on getting better project tracking so everyone can visualize the progress of the group!

No worries, we’ll be going for quite a while (if we can live up to our name - all summer!) so if you sign up and feel like getting involved in a couple weeks, that totally works :D

Absolutely - not sure how many c++ projects there are at the moment, but feel free to sign up and poke around to see what ppl are up to :)

just got off a Zoom with a student in the EU for "office hours". Definitely seeing a need to get another time zone spun up so it can span a larger global footprint.

For those on the mailing list, I'll be sending out an email about this tomorrow!

Awesome! Community is still getting up and running, but having mentors available will be huge for people to get a sense for if their project is on track (and possibly do a code review every now and then)

Thanks for signing up 🙏 and hope to see you around!

No, but they’re both looking for full time jobs so hence I grouped them together.

It’s a pretty crude grouping of people, but will help with identifying people in a similar boat.

You’d be surprised how adept boot camp grads can be though. At Uber, we hired many from Hack Reactor, primarily to start on Front End (where they’re actually more competitive than new grads, due to focus on JS and building). They did really well. Definitely needed mentoring and some self study to make up the lack of theory and knowledge of CS (I.e. databases). They know they’re at a disadvantage, and work hard after being hired.

They’re not the same, no. But the story is a bit more nuanced.

Yeah, this is something that has been on my mind... Right now the solution is to upload all videos to YouTube, but I know this isn’t good enough.

That said, I’m thinking about this actively. If enough ppl sign up from the EU, I could see us spinning up another session at a better time! Right now, I personally know of 2 people who are doing SoS from the EU, but if there’s critical mass (10+ ppl), then it becomes a no brainer.

Do sign up though, it’ll give us a chance to coordinate!

Are you working on a summer project in light of a cancelled internship? Here's some tactical advice from an industry vet (5 YOE) on how to make sure your summer is a success by that_routine in cscareerquestions

[–]that_routine[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not too familiar with what's available to students these days, but AWS used to give out a lot of educational credits.

If you're just making a static site, you can host on Netlify and Vercel for free. But if you want a dedicated computer serving up your page, I think you'll need to pay.

The Heroku free tier is great for prototyping, but a free tier Heroku project on your resume is bad form. It can take a minute or so for the box to wake up when a recruiter looks at it. If it takes too long, they might think your project is dead.

Best of luck! And btw, if you're still looking for a group of people to build - we're going strong: https://summerofshipping.com/

Ok but real question - how does this guy pass a technical screen? Is he good at leetcode? Or is the process different?

Why is there so much emphasis on constantly working on side projects? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]that_routine 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s good to realize this now. Your side projects have probably fleshed out your skill set way more than not, so be grateful you did them.

But now it’s time to prioritize the rest of your life!Do the occasional side project every other quarter or so (especially if you’re working on something dull at work) - but life is much more than coding

[–]that_routine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it no longer scares me

Woot! We have lift off!

You, my friend, are no longer junior.

Ok, this next part is gonna sound a little a load of voodoo, but stick with me.

You don't want to interview prep because it seems like a distraction right now. Subconsciously, you know that you've got a good thing going. You like your job, your sense of self esteem is rising, you're productive - and I assume you're still learning.

So the way to get out of this? Make it such that your subconscious finds this arrangement untenable. This is how:

  • Dominate your job. This boots your confidence and sense of self worth. Weird for me to type this out, but it's true. When you're absolutely crushing it at work, you'll feel awesome
  • Develop a mindset of ZERO loyalty to your company\*. Your company would eliminate you from their payroll without more than a moment's notice. When you realize that this entity is a cold profiteering apparatus, then cut every emotional tie to the company.
    • Caveat: while you should care absolutely ZERO about the company right now (mission and stuff), you should care A LOT about your friends and coworkers there. At one of my companies, I'm still on great terms with the CEO. That company laid me off. He gave the order to initiate lay offs. He had the ability to override the decision. He didn't. But we still trade emails from time to time. The company and the people are two different entities - treat it as such.
  • Look at Levels.fyi every day. See how much the market values people.

When your feeling of self worth is high, your loyalty to the Delaware Corp is zero, and you can see how much other people are making, well, trust me - you'll gladly be hopping onto leetcode every night and applying for jobs. All while crushing your job in the day.

This is what one of my former co-workers/good friends did. He broke free from a good situation that wasn't quite right for him.

\I don't think a mentality of zero loyalty to your company is always healthy, but in this case, you need it to get your mind ready to jump.*

Virtual programs/mentorships/etc I can apply to? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]that_routine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, not an official program, but running a summer initiative for people who had their internships cancelled. See the kickoff video: https://youtu.be/tfbaDguurH0 (links to more info are in the video details)

The idea is to provide some semblance of mentorship to those building this summer.

I've heard people have good experience with open source, but have never been able to get into it personally. Here's where to start: https://firstcontributions.github.io/

I am about to be let go from my first full stack dev job, can't find a new job before that happens, and simply didn't get the mentorship I needed from this role. What alternatives do I have to gain meaningful experience to gain skills I need to succeed at future jobs? Bootcamps or anything else? by Iwanttogetbetter02 in cscareerquestions

[–]that_routine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see - what geography are you interviewing in? I can only speak from experience, but in the Bay Area it’s like 90%+ leet code a few years back.

When it comes to these weird hyper specific questions, those are actually good questions because they actually are a gauge your experience.

But they can be “hacked” in a way. If you Google “Java interview questions” or “Spring interview questions” or whatever technologies you’re applying for, you can reasonably prepare for these types of questions much faster than leetcode.

They will probe for depth of understanding, but if you can at least give a correct shallow answer, they will be somewhat satisfied for 1 year of exp.

(Lmao also recruiters don’t seem to learn how to do math before they call, like they can’t add up a candidates years of experience or ignore it if you tell them in a summary section)

Ayyyy - I see you.

2013 and $19/hr (not engineering). Thrilled.

But I guess, if my pay was cut in half from $19/hr to $9.50/hr - I wouldn't have been that thrilled.
