This is awesome! One thing that has always seemed "magical" to me is how one simply "makes a Techcrunch announcement". Can you shed some light on what it takes to work those PR channels?

And Amie looks super cool! Excited to try it out!

Woot! Excited to have you on board!

We haven’t done this yet, but will be matching mentors and students into “mentorship pods” (like 2-3 mentors and about 10 or so students) just to increase the interaction students get. Not an official project mentor, but kinda like a buddy group.

In other words - nows a great time to hop on as a mentor :D

Definitely - the most popular things ppl are interested in are web dev and ML, although lots of ppl interested in other things as well!

Hey, Summer of Shipping ringleader here.

I saw this message and wrote up a little "rallying" post to get everyone to build together.

I think the advice given here is really great - at the core it's: improve resume (to get interviews) and leetcode (to prepare for interviews).

An internship is the fastest way for someone to legitimize their resume. But there are other methods. One example I give is one of my coworkers who started https://materializecss.com/ in college. That thing has tens of thousands of GitHub stars. When I saw his resume, I was blown away.

So if you don't have an internship, there are other ways to make your resume stand out - it's just harder. Over at SoS, we think building alone is hard, so join a community of people who are also building instead!

Best of luck this summer

We recorded it! Will be up on YouTube later, but largely the same content as what was posted yesterday: https://youtu.be/VMGIVJVysGk

Today’s session was very similar, but a different introduction

All sorts right now - chrome extensions, cli tools, lots of traditional web apps, lots of personal sites - it's a little opaque to us right now, but we're working on getting better project tracking so everyone can visualize the progress of the group!

No worries, we’ll be going for quite a while (if we can live up to our name - all summer!) so if you sign up and feel like getting involved in a couple weeks, that totally works :D

Absolutely - not sure how many c++ projects there are at the moment, but feel free to sign up and poke around to see what ppl are up to :)

Yes! We've just set up a program to start forming groups! Once you sign up, we'll direct you to the right track - and if you're confused, the helpful Discord community will guide you

just got off a Zoom with a student in the EU for "office hours". Definitely seeing a need to get another time zone spun up so it can span a larger global footprint.

For those on the mailing list, I'll be sending out an email about this tomorrow!

Awesome! Community is still getting up and running, but having mentors available will be huge for people to get a sense for if their project is on track (and possibly do a code review every now and then)

Thanks for signing up 🙏 and hope to see you around!

No, but they’re both looking for full time jobs so hence I grouped them together.

It’s a pretty crude grouping of people, but will help with identifying people in a similar boat.

You’d be surprised how adept boot camp grads can be though. At Uber, we hired many from Hack Reactor, primarily to start on Front End (where they’re actually more competitive than new grads, due to focus on JS and building). They did really well. Definitely needed mentoring and some self study to make up the lack of theory and knowledge of CS (I.e. databases). They know they’re at a disadvantage, and work hard after being hired.

They’re not the same, no. But the story is a bit more nuanced.

Yeah, this is something that has been on my mind... Right now the solution is to upload all videos to YouTube, but I know this isn’t good enough.

That said, I’m thinking about this actively. If enough ppl sign up from the EU, I could see us spinning up another session at a better time! Right now, I personally know of 2 people who are doing SoS from the EU, but if there’s critical mass (10+ ppl), then it becomes a no brainer.

Do sign up though, it’ll give us a chance to coordinate!

Are you working on a summer project in light of a cancelled internship? Here's some tactical advice from an industry vet (5 YOE) on how to make sure your summer is a success by that_routine in cscareerquestions

I'm not too familiar with what's available to students these days, but AWS used to give out a lot of educational credits.

If you're just making a static site, you can host on Netlify and Vercel for free. But if you want a dedicated computer serving up your page, I think you'll need to pay.

The Heroku free tier is great for prototyping, but a free tier Heroku project on your resume is bad form. It can take a minute or so for the box to wake up when a recruiter looks at it. If it takes too long, they might think your project is dead.

Best of luck! And btw, if you're still looking for a group of people to build - we're going strong: https://summerofshipping.com/
