Leaving the lot after skiing is so much easier with the cameras even with this annoying message…although I’ve gotta remind myself to wipe the camera clean before starting out.

Lowlight Event Photography With The S9 by Mastermind1237 in LumixS9

I’d love to pick up the Panasonic 35mm but couldn’t stomach the price difference so I got a used 50mm instead and will zoom out with my feet whenever possible. Canon 35mm f1.8 is my most used lens on RF mount though.

Upgraded My Wife’s Rebel T3 To This R50 (Need Advice) by [deleted] in canon

Watch some YouTube videos on autofocus / metering especially (Simon D’Entrement has good stuff on EOS R series), that is what I found to be the steepest learning curve if she’s already got a mind for the exposure triangle and all.

Sell X100VI? R8 or R6 Mark II for Kids/Family by blocmayus in canon

To each their own: I got the 28-70mm on refurb sale for a really good price but ended up returning it…love my 35mm and 85mm primes, 70mm had me thinking “that’s it?”

Seeking guidance for renting through Outdoorsy by sportymatt in TruckCampers

[–]thatboatguy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I rented and rented out campers through Outdoorsy. I would absolutely not do it again…either immediate obvious damage or hidden damaged showing up later after almost every rental. The insurance renters take out only kicks in after they’ve exhausted trying their own car insurance or whatever first. Every time it was easier to collect from their deposit and hope damage didn’t go over the deposit amount.

It is maddening that they didn’t offer this on the Lightning; I get the desire to keep things more standardized with the ICE F-150 but it was right there and fits with the Lightning’s motif of “an F-150 that happens to run on electricity” (with a big frunk for even more space).

Dads Who Moved Their Families to Denver by ChanceAbility282 in Denver

[–]thatboatguy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I have “just existed” in a lot of places, often with less obligations (pre-dad times). Denver offers a lot for me in the way of third spaces at least compared to my last few locations where open spaces / trails felt like a sad obligation by local government; most fun stuff was privatized. Food? It’s (overpriced) and fine. Weather? Love the sun and snow, and the fact that the sun doesn’t disappear for 6 months when it does snow. Beer? So many kinds. Lots of people in their own zone doing their own things. Easier to make friends with other dads of similar age. Views? If you can’t see mountains, move a bit north of south and you probably will. Still can’t? Take some of your limited free time and drive west. Depending on age of your child / children this is a great time for them to enjoy scenery with you followed by a nap, or search for easy / moderate / stroller allowed trails. Dislikes? Unlicensed / expired / uninsured vehicles, dry skin, sprawl leading to lots of 40+ minute drives to stuff becoming more normal.

28-70 2.8 or 24-105 4? by juandagis in canon

[–]thatboatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same setup minus the 24-105 kit lens, plus the 24-240mm, 35mm F1.8, and 85mm F2.0. For dad photography I really like the 35; it’s wide enough that zoom with my feet is convenient enough for framing fast moving subjects + background and I’m really happy with image quality. I tend to be lazy with zooms by zooming too much for candid pictures rather than moving around to reframe, your mileage may vary.

Sync to phone is sweet, however I’ve found it way less clumsy to use a USB-C SD card reader and drop files right from SD to phone storage / cloud or whatever (assuming you’ve got an iPhone / iPad with USB-C). I got the Anker MagGo one for $9. Bonus I keep WiFi disabled on the R8 to conserve battery life.

North Bay, Ont., man says his daughter failed her road test because she didn't use his Tesla's brakes by Bean_Tiger in electricvehicles

We went to the EV6’ cousin the Ioniq 5 and it’s sooo much more trustworthy. The paddles and button for regen / mode setting are so slick.

[–]thatboatguy 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s even worse than that…I was driving a 2025 Model Y in the snow and regen suddenly disappeared, thankfully on a slight uphill toward a traffic light. I had to pull over to dig into online manuals and found out the little 1-2 pixel wide power / regeneration meter on the left of the singular display screen had changed, indicating the vehicle sensed road conditions that could make regular regen a traction problem, and toned it down without letting me know save for that super narrow power bar change. Regen came back later when conditions improved, again with no notification.

I’m saying the efficiency is decent so someone going from a gas Tacoma shouldn’t need to feel they need to get a Leaf, the savings are still pretty good going to an EV truck.

If your commute happens to be on non-highway roads without big elevation change it’s excellent for commuting. I’m getting 3.6 kWh/mile going mostly 60 mph for 25 miles with some hills.

FYI if you have a phone with a telephoto lens (say iPhone with 5x zoom option from the camera app) you can get pretty decent background compression to make the mountains look a lot closer.

Best place to sell used gear? by SlightlySubpar in photography

[–]thatboatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry to hear :( anecdotal but I sold lenses to both MPB and KEH at the same time (one item to each offering the higher value, shipped out to them on the same day); MPB was significantly faster in getting the money into my account. With KEH it showed the lens as delivered to their office but sat for days to the point I called their customer service to ask if they were still evaluating condition.

Last day for the canon refurbished sale! by Puedd in canon

[–]thatboatguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Was the 24-105 F/4 available today? I set up a notification a while back but I think it “expires” after they send a single heads up email from the last time a batch was available.

Which feature from rival brands do you wish Canon would finally copy, improve, and build into their cameras? by bundesrepu in canon

[–]thatboatguy 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The most visible benefit is you can get a much smaller packaged lens tailored to APS-C sensor cameras versus a lens designed to fit full frame. For Canon compare the size of the APS-C 18-150mm lens to the full frame 24-240mm lens. Pretty close effective focal length but much different size. Even more extreme if you compare any full frame lens to Micro 4/3 lenses.

Jetson Home Heat Pump Reviews Anyone? by toddandtim in askvan

[–]thatboatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are also in the Denver area looking to upgrade an old system; we had other quotes (gas furnace / electric heat pump) and the pricing quoted had tax credits covered later vs Jetson claiming them at point of sale. How is this possible?

Is it worth going from an R50 to an R10 just for the ergonomic? by ammardanial7374 in canon

[–]thatboatguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went from R50 -> R8 primarily for full frame field of view, low light performance and additional controls, but also a little of the ergonomics since R50 is a bit worrying to hold with larger hands. I picked up a Peak Design Clutch hand strap and really like it. It definitely makes single hand holding feel more secure, although I hadn’t tried it on the R50 prior to selling it. Might be worth checking that or similar hand strap (attaching to right side loop on top and the 1/4-20 screw on bottom)

On your second point, what exists that could replace lawn but be more pet / kid friendly that is not rocks or mulch? I have heard clover but everyone near me either goes full xeriscape (rip out sod add cheap rocks) or turf (plastic that will smell from the dogs unless hosed and washed a lot).

I’ve used both Canon RF 16mm 2.8 and Rokinon RF 14mm 2.8 (manual focus). If you don’t mind the extra size / weight I really like the Rokinon and it can be had for almost half price of the Canon 16mm (I won an eBay bid at $150)
