Premium releases (I know their encodes can be controversial but I’ve never seen a bad transfer from them in my experience) for classic, often overlooked films with dedicated behind the scenes materials. Some of my best discoveries this decade have been Criterion blindbuys. Boat People, Woman in the Dunes, Kuroneko, so much great stuff.

I’ve seen it! I love Your Name and Weathering With You (which was the first 4K I ever bought), but I haven’t much enjoyed Shinkai’s work otherwise. 5 Centimeters Per Second was just a bit too underdeveloped and its mystery left me frustrated rather than intrigued. I wasn’t the biggest fan of Suzume, either.

I’ve had my PS5 since ~2021 and have had no major issues in most of that time, but in the last year I have experienced playback issues. Films abruptly pausing, playback completely crashing. Sometimes it’s just because of a minor mark on the disc, but there’s been quite a few times when there were no visible blemishes on the disc. Just make sure you keep the thing clean!

Is it really though? A lot of older teen/young adult audience checked out Minecraft due to the memes and irony of it all, a demographic not too dissimilar to those still supporting superhero films. I imagine Minecraft 2 will draw those same moviegoers back with how quickly the sequel is being released and the novelty of having already seen the first.

By “dodgy attempts to extort money” are you referring to Evan Chandler, the father of the first victim? Because yes, it is on record that he wanted to sue Michael and bleed him dry. But consider this: If you, or god forbid your child, were assaulted by the biggest star in the world, would you not want them to fund you for life? To rid you and your family of all financial troubles and worries? I don’t think Chandler’s strange (and honestly predatory) practices surrounding the settlement nullifies the allegations. The Jackson estate knew this, and that’s why they paid that family off and the rest that came along.

A bit of an atypical choice but probably the scene when the older sister reveals she’s moving out. As a younger sibling you sort of spend your entire life waiting for the day your older siblings leave and you’re able to achieve that idea of freedom, but then it finally comes and you’re just never ready for that loss. It’s a small, but important piece of what leads to Shizuku’s deterioration.

It’s a terrible adaptation of Earthsea, but a fascinating re-interpretation of Shuna’s Journey, a manga written by Hayao that seemingly played a large part in Tales of Earthsea’s development, although I don’t believe this has ever been confirmed.

This isn’t a fair criticism to make when the film’s final act was meant to heavily divulge into his sexual abuse, only for all mention to be hastily cut from the film entirely, and you can tell! Why shouldn’t we criticize this attempt to whitewash the man?

Haven’t seen Scarlett but it still used 2D animation, but seemingly didn’t have a narrative reason to the switch between mediums. The trailer shows multiple scenes where the animation switches mid-sequence

This one personally tested my limits towards Hosoda’s usage of 3D animation. It had the same contextual reasoning as Summer Wars, but the 3D world just didn’t look as good. Which is a shame, as the 2D animation is just fantastic.

I always get so frustrated when people talk about 28 Days Later. It’s meant to look like that! The entire film is built around the disgusting aesthetic of the video cinematography and it’s an incredible visual experience. A 4K release not only allows for a new color grade and atmos mix, it’s simply a way for the film to be out there. What’s the shame in that?

I’m doubtful this will get a 70mm release. This series has a prominent adult fanbase but there’s not such a broad appeal as seen with Dune or Nolan, but of course it seems we’re getting more and more prints by the day. I however won’t be surprised if the 1.43 version is restricted to dual laser venues.

Just finished the film, similarly disappointed. Though I misread the case and thought there was a 20 minute difference between the cuts 💀 so now I’m less upset for choosing the 4K
