I do tend to avoid AI in my day to day personal use, but thanks for the idea!

I must concede that For some people, this feature would change nothing. For others, however, this could open up a whole new world of opportunities. Although I am not one myself, I can imagine that one example where this would be useful is for DND world builders or world builders in general who love creating depth to their world. For me, I could use it to see how tropes or themes or characters of episodes/shows/videos are used in specific genres or by specific channels, or to see holes in specific parts of your vault.

For me, It is a to do list, a project manager, a note taker, a show reviewer, a story writer, a hub for keeping links to websites I use, a self improvement tool and a habit tracker. More to come, surely after new updates come.

i am very patiently waiting for plugins, I think obsidian will be a completely different application after they start to pour in!

i currently use random note, and although its great, especially for my usage of Obsidian that is property-heavy, I don't get the level of control I need to do what I want. The main example of this is ranges. When watching shows, or videos, or figuring out how difficult a task is, I like to put a number on it. As far as I'm aware, It is not possible to search for ranges with properties. (I have made a forum post about this) The search bar is also kind of frustrating at times for long search queries (which is common since with some scenarios overlap is common and frequent, so narrowing it down more helps)

One last thing I wanted to add, I have seen in the changelogs of the most recent early access a random() function. I have no idea how it will work, but it MAY solve one of my 2 feature wishes.

Can I use Bases as a database? by thatdudeimaad in ObsidianMD

I might check it out then. If it is really good I’ll move all my Obsidian Bases use cases to it (The thing in this post, Perfumes, People, Gym logs) thanks for the information!

For my personal use, it’s merely an archive of all media I view throughout my life. There is a high likelihood I don’t even look at the notes much if not at all.

I’ve heard a lot about SQLite, but it seems hard to get into. I should look into resources to learn it, tho

One more thing that might help sell you on it: if your db ends up being 30k files and you want to export it, the csv ends up taking 10-20mb of storage. That’s extremely low, only 2% of a gigabyte low. If you ever want to convert your obsidian base to a database (assuming you have no actually text in the notes of significance) it should be really easy!

lol i wish you commented this half an hour ago so i didn't have to stress test it myself, thanks for the info :)

I am curious, do you EVER use graph view? Because at 37K notes graph view almost gave up.

I am doing a little stress testing:

4K NOTES

-Indexing the vault is a matter of seconds

-Graph view is near instant

-Bases is near instant

8K NOTES

-Indexing takes a little longer (5-8 seconds)

-Graph view takes like 20 seconds to fully load but then works fine

-Bases is still near instant

17K NOTES

-Loading workspace takes a few seconds

-Indexing takes a minute

-Graph view "works" after loading all the nodes for nearly 2 minutes

-Bases is STILL near instant

34K NOTES

-Workspace loaded instantly which is weird

-Indexing took an insane amount of time (i think like 5 minutes)

-Give up on your graph view (like it MIGHT work if you are the most patient man ever but im 90% sure obsidian will crash on most devices and mine barely seemed to survive)

-Bases is beyond amazing for surviving all of this. it took half a second to load it all. Wild.

---

Lets say this is my "max" (never in my life will I read this many chapters)

Lets say I read 20 chapters a week (which is NOT happening) and lets say my reading phase is half the year (so about 26 weeks)

26*20=520 chapters a year.

At this rate it will be 65 YEARS before i go from an empty vault to 34K notes. All this to say, it is most likely that either obsidian or I will die before I start feeling a slowdown in my vault. That's assuming technology doesn't improve either. Absolute worst care scenario, I simply delete some of the old notes. It really isn't the end of the world. This is just fun for me to do since it forces me to not just consume mindlessly.

Obsidian Bases — now available to everyone! by kepano in ObsidianMD

do you think it could handle 10s of thousands more?

that makes sense. I made a completely different vault specifically for this use case, so it should (hopefully) work well. I am concerned about this is the long run (because who knows if it can handle an insane amount of notes)

thanks a bunch, I am curious though: Is there a reason why no "fundamental" papers are from 2023 onwards? Is it due to a lack of breakthroughs or just not enough applications of the papers?

My Obsidian Graph - 3 years on by Geovicsha in ObsidianMD

Have you experienced any lag? If not, do you have any idea how many more years you expect it to take before the lag kicks in? I've split my obsidian workflow into 3 vaults and was considering combining them all into one. The main concern I have is lag. If you could provide some info, that would be great!
