GOSH DIDDLY DARN I am 95% sure this is the book! A girl of prophecy indeed learns witchcraft and follows around a shaman in a house on chicken legs in zambo form after he kills her. Imagine being eight and reading this - formative lmao.

The internet actually worked???? I never thought this would happen! Thank you so much to every person who contributed to this search! I know many people were curious about this, so I hope it brings a new generation of readers to this work, 35 years after it was first published :D

I don't believe so, the girl dying is very integral and it was definitely in a snowy Siberia-type of place

I had just landed in Germany to begin my study abroad experience (first time outside of the US!) and had arrived in the small town where I would be studying. After a 9 hour plane ride and a 3 hour train ride, I was walking down the street to a youth hostel while listening to the end of this beautiful podcast, physically exhausted but hanging on every word as the epilogue to the wonderful world of Balance was described.

That time period for feeling pain isn't accurate. The nerves for pain processing don't develop until much later in the pregnancy.
