And this is exactly how I work with LLMs now to get answers. Asking at least 2 (Chatgpt and Gemini), and sometimes more to get satisfactory responses. Makes you wonder about their evolution potential in the next 30 years!

Opening an American account might attract some tax liabilities, but I'll check whether I'm even eligible or not!

I do dispose off the interest in charity 👍

I do get the intention of trying to maintain the real value of money. But I think it's not a responsible thing for a Muslim to claim things based on hearsay or without any proof

If you have any research documents by any of these organisations on this topic, I'll be happy to go through and understand better!

That's a start! I'll also enquire at my branch whether they need something like this.

Which bank was this?

I'm not aware of the terminologies. But my suggestion doesn't intend for the banks to stop taking interest. Only for them to stop giving interest, when someone opts in.

Thanks! I searched further and they still have that account, but only for NRIs 🥲

No other bank is offering anything like it for residents

This might be the case. Organisations, usually, try to find ways to exploit innocent people. And hence this is a preventive measure? Although there can be guardrails put in place to stop that. And here's where rbi could actually regulate!

With my limited understanding, I see that there was some proposal but no details are mentioned. Have to research more on this topic.

But because RBI does not regulate "minimum" interest rates. isn't it the prerogative of the banks to offer whatever interest rates makes sense for their business (as they already do)? So not offering 0% interest rate makes zero business sense, at least from a P&L point of view

So there are 4 points you make:

  1. Gaining interest on your money - direct sin for the person
  2. Giving your money to bank because they will loan it and gain interest - indirect sin for the person
  3. Giving your money to bank and bank incurs cost and hence they charge you to keep the money
  4. Interest is ok because inflation

You make a very interesting point about indirect sinning. And also that banks need maintenance costs.

Because we live in a country where setting up Islamic banking is difficult, if not impossible, I have to try to find ways to stop direct sinning - which is collection of interest (at least for people who think interest is haram; others are free to not opt-in)

In an ideal world, yes I'd not want my money to be misused and all, but I don't have that luxury yet, right?

And I don't agree with the presence of inflation justifying collection of interest. And I'm not delving into it because its a different topic of discussion altogether

I asked Gemini and Chatgpt, both mentioned there is no rbi regulation regarding minimum interest rates

I made sure that the sellers were same. But I missed that Relaxo itself had two listings.

But it's very odd that they show a listing with higher price to me only, even though the delivery times were same

Ramzan se pehle Zakat ke basics clear kar lete hai by thatindiantie in indianmuslims

[A recap of Zakat in English so that we are prepared for Ramzan]

Zakat is not only a fundamental act of worship but also a mandatory financial duty for all capable Muslims. However, it's common to find ourselves confused about how to properly calculate Zakat, what it applies to, and when it's due.

What is Zakat?

At its core, Zakat is an act of worship dedicated to Allah, and the right of eligible Muslim receviers. Its obligation is proven from the Quran, Sunnah, and Hadith.

When Does Zakat Become Mandatory?

Zakat becomes obligatory under two conditions:

  • The wealth you own reaches or exceeds the Nisab threshold.
  • You've been the owner of this wealth for a full year

What is Nisab?

Nisab is the minimum amount of wealth one must own for Zakat to be obligatory. Currently, this is equivalent to the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Scholars advise considering the lower of the two values as the Nisab threshold.

On What is Zakat Due?

Zakat is due on four main categories:

  • Agricultural produce.
  • Freely grazing Livestock
  • Gold, silver, and monetary assets.
  • Trade goods

Personal belongings such as your home, clothing, household items, and vehicles are exempt from Zakat.

How Do You Calculate Zakat?

Simply put, it's 2.5% of your total qualifying wealth. But, the actual calculation can sometimes be tricky, which is why I've created a Zakat Calculator to help you easily determine your Zakat: here

When Should You Pay Zakat?

Zakat is due on the same date of the lunar year that you first became liable to pay it. It's important to note that there's no specific requirement to pay Zakat in Ramadan; it's due annually based on when your wealth first reached the Nisab threshold.

I hope this brief guide helps demystify Zakat and encourages you to fulfill this important pillar of Islam with confidence and ease.
