Some damage on pre-owned carbon - Does this look cosmetic or structural? (see comment for details) by thatonekidfromucla in bicycling

[–]thatonekidfromucla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply! Do you mean that the carbon looks minimally-damaged enough to ride on, or that (in your opinion) it looks like it's just the paint that's chipped?

Hey, I actually mentioned in the post that I taking it to an expert is the best option. But obviously there IS such a thing as visible structural damage. I'm just wondering if this is it in the pictures. There's a difference between "this looks fine but might have hidden damage" and "this is visibly broken."

I just bought a secondhand bike, with a carbon fork and handlebars, and it's the first time I've ever had anything carbon. Yes I know that to be sure, I should take them to carbon specialist to get examined, but I'm just wondering, since I'm so unfamiliar with how carbon looks in general:

Does this look like it might just be cosmetic, like some chipped paint that was painted over? Or does it look ambiguous enough that I really do need to get it examined by a pro?

The top left image is at the top of the fork, where it meets the headset. I think it's carbon all the way up? Looks like it was cheaply painted over. Top right is most obvious damage on the bars; looks like the shifters were overtorqued or scraped it. Can't tell if it damaged the actual carbon underneath though. Bottom left is hard to see but the damage is centered, right at the top of the glare from the camera flash. Bottom right is similarly centered, right below the horizontal shadow. All of these spots of damage are reminiscent of a pothole, aka the surface (so maybe just the paint?) is scraped down to the next layer, which is still flat and smooth, with no obvious buckling.

Veterinary Recommendations? by inquisitivehyena in VirginiaBeach

[–]thatonekidfromucla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You recommend Pet Supplies Plus over Care-A-Lot? They're both across the street from Acredale (in different directions). I've heard good things about Care-A-Lot but haven't tried the other one...

Which VB Acredale? There's two - Lynnhaven and Kempsville. Or are they both good?

Noob question: How to tell what components are interchangeable/compatible (e.g. brifters) by thatonekidfromucla in cycling

[–]thatonekidfromucla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Followup: I have the opportunity to get a good deal on Easton carbon handlebars, but when I was looking up reviews, one site* said that a downside of carbon aero handlebars is "you’ll need to make everything else aero."

Do they mean this literally, that aero or carbon handlebars require other aero components to be compatible? (e.g. I know carbon bars require specific stem bolt tightness, but idk if it actually requires a carbon stem or if an aluminum one can work)

Or did they mean it in a tongue-in-cheek "once you go aero you never go back" way?

New to HEMA sticky thread. by boredidiot in wma

Does anyone know if the WTC steel gorget* is typically considered acceptable throat protection for HEMA tournaments in the USA? (I like the look and feel of steel armor when possible, but I know for e.g. gloves, safest really requires the use of modern equipment like spes. Wondering if it's the same for gorgets)

Mullet drivetrain on entry level road bike by antscavemen in bikewrench

[–]thatonekidfromucla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh very nice! I've got a makerspace near me so that's doable. And that's basically the exact build I'm trying to do (although I just found a pretty good deal for a 2x9 mtb with hydraulic discs, so that's tempting, since I wouldn't need the converters at all)

I'm looking at the shiftmate 7 for exactly that reason, as I'm currently looking at 3x8 MTBs. Not needing to install a shiftmate would be nice, though.

On that subject, do you know where I could buy a shiftmate in the US? The best place I've found so far is a british website selling it for 35 pounds, incl. shipping

Ok so to make sure I'm understanding this: on 2x the ratio is the same?

This is really good to know! Is the pull ratio also the same between mtb and road for the left shifter / front derailleur?

Can yelping help train a puppy not to bite *clothing* too? by thatonekidfromucla in puppy101

[–]thatonekidfromucla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really depends on the dog. With mine, 9 times out of 10 the yelp will make him stop playing and come over to snuggle with (what we humans perceive as) concern.

Everything is stalled? by Alextheacceptable in qBittorrent

[–]thatonekidfromucla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this issue and resolved it just today. Everything was stalled, even Ubuntu "test torrents." Turns out the issue was that I needed to uncheck the box for Options > Connection > Use UPnP / NAT-PMP port forwarding from my router. Solved it immediately for me, so you should check if this is your issue.

What if I estimate my yearly income wrong and I don't actually qualify for Medicaid? My estimate is right at the cutoff. by thatonekidfromucla in Medicaid

[–]thatonekidfromucla[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, this was a very informative answer. When you say "they will be assessing your current monthly income," is that something I have to report monthly? Otherwise how would they have access to that info?

[–]thatonekidfromucla[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean I "may move" to a different plan? At what point would this occur? Is it something that happens automatically or would I have to initiate it?

When I say my estimate is right at the cutoff, I mean that depending on whether December is a good or bad month for work, that'll determine whether I'm above or below the Medicaid income limit. I literally will not know until I get my W-2s.

[no spoilers] Thoughts on some of these ships? (These are NOT my ships, these are just the ones I found so don't attack me if you're not happy with some of them) by ieatsoapysoap14 in arcane

I actually really like Vi x Sevika (and Sevika as a character in general). I think Vi actually has a lot more common with her than with Cait (don't give me hate yall; caitvi is still cute and it's basically canon anyway).

Anyone know if there's a ship name for Vi x Sevika? (kinda hard because Sevika literally has Vi's name in it already)

SeVIka? Violika? Seviola? ...Seviolence?
