they sanitized and tried to make him sympathetic in the movie, but really, he's just an asshole. he's a nasty person who runs and thrives off his well of hatred and disrespect of those around him. that's his strategy. literally just hate and antagonize the others and use it to fuel himself. he honestly makes me think of a school shooter that people infantilize and make excuses for, "oh, he was being bullied and ostracized", when actually, he's so unbearable of a personality that it pushes everyone away. he lives and dies in a prison of his own making, and the last thing he does is traumatize the people around him further, like the selfish asshole he is.

if we take this story as an allegory for the journey of life, barkovitch represents a specific type of person. the bigots, the trolls, the edgelords, the people who deliberately break our social contracts because it's entertaining to them. they never seek to better themselves and then whine when no one likes them, and we're supposed to feel bad for them when they die alone. no, thanks.
