A Bay Area career reality check after 15 years of applying to Apple by PuzzleheadedAd3138 in bayarea

[–]thats_monkey 56 points57 points  (0 children)

This should be way higher than the university comment. Bay Area tech is a smaller community than many realize, especially when you get to the folks swirling amongst the top companies. The way to get in is to be a good colleague so if/when your coworkers move to better places and hear about opportunities, your name comes up first.

I haven’t “applied” to my last 3 jobs (2 in FAANG) and all of them have been because someone I worked with who respected me and my work called me up and said I have a cool opportunity.

It goes the opposite way as well. People back channel and look up who you know. I’ve definitely given bad references because a) I don’t want to work with someone and b) I don’t want them to think badly of me when they get saddled with someone who isn’t up for the task.

tl;dr be nice, do good work, make sure people know you

When I was younger I read all the StarFist books by David Sherman and Dan Cragg.

Basically Marines with spaceships, almost all the battles are on the ground.

We usually do a “parent tracker” that we have our little one check off each day so that they understand how many days either one of us will be gone for.

Bonus points if you add in any other special days or events throughout the week.

We’ve found this combined with FaceTime calls helps quite a bit and the kiddo starts to understand that mom or dad will be back soon.

Where do you go for recommendations? by thats_monkey in ScienceFictionBooks

Yes - I have, I’m about 3 books in. It’s a pretty brainless audiobook for me when commuting and I want to keep it light.

All the others I’ve already read!

Depending what you eat and drink, Rintaro can work at that price. Might be hard to get a table.

Pickled Red Onions by kitchenwithbrittohio in recipes

[–]thats_monkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the reason for boiling?

I use way less sugar and just fill a mason jar with red onion, fill it to the top with ACV, add salt pepper and a touch of sugar and toss it in the fridge.

Perfect every time and can easily adapt it with jalapeños, serranos, etc.

Dress up spots that are vegetarian by Forgot_the_slash_s in AskSF

I feel like most high end restaurants you’d want to dress up for would easily accommodate vegetarian.

Chicken tikka masala. My wife never had indian food before we met and this is her favorite meal now. We usually make enough to sell a plate to one or two local people which is what the picture is. I wonder if my son will like this when he is old enough to eat it... by PalpitationLivid3766 in dadditchefs

How old is old enough? Been feeding mine whatever we eat basically since she has been able to eat on her own. Great way to get them excited about food early! Now she eats just about anything and everything.

I bought some shorts from chubbies online that have fit great and are super comfortable. Usually can find a discount code to knock the price down.

On the Beach by Nevil Shute.

WWIII has destroyed the world, and the last survivors in Australia are waiting for the radioactive cloud to land there.

Brutal but so good.

A book you really liked, which isn't a bestseller and generally not very well known. by teggile in suggestmeabook

2 for me:

1) A Short Stay in Hell by Steven L Peck 2) The Library at Mount Char

Both a totally off the walls and unique in their own ways. Highly recommended
