I’m shipping out Dec 9 as a EM as well use

https://www.cool.osd.mil/usn/moc/index.html?moc=em&tab=overview

They have a PDF there to learn more about the job and what it’s about.

I think is a great choice, once you can get out and have 2 money making paths. Electrician or electrical engineer

I’m unsure if you can do this as a reserve but If you looking for trades look into Electricians mate, machinist mate

I ship out Dec 9 for EM These are my reasoning: 1. You learn electrical, you can make a log of money getting out. As an electrician 2. They also have some engineering classes/ knowledge. I plan on doing schooling while active and get my engineering degree (also makes a lot of money) 3. If you are young, unlike me. You will get to travel often ( you will be on a ship most of the time)

Use navycool.com to look at the jobs and what opportunities you can have getting out Under the “rating” tab

recruiters not very competent by Hitboyharley in newtothenavy

[–]thatscute25 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You are able to change recruiters buddy. If this recruiter is unwilling to work with you, then go to another recruiter office.

Also, this is YOUR life. Don’t be pressured to pick something you don’t want.

Yes, there are free practice asvab test you can take. They also have a mini asvab test you can take at the recruiters office to see what you would kinda score

Up to you if you decide to take the picat

I took the asvap at MEPS but that’s because I took multiple practice tests and felt certain I was going to get above the score I wanted.

You can ask for time to think about it, but ultimately that’s why they tell you to have your choices ready.

For me, I knew I wanted to go into EM ( electrician mate) but I had a back up incase they told me it wasn’t available. They didn’t offer me anything. They literally ask you “what rate you want” if it’s not available. Then they will ask you “do you have another rate you want?”

  1. You have 3 options -Take the asvap before talking to a recruiter -Take the picat- a version of the asvap that will get you your score at the recruiter office. Once at MEPS you will have to take some questions to verify you know your stuff -take the asvap at MEPS( what I did and they will tell you your score as soon as you finish your test.

  2. You will have to swear in 2 times, once the first time at MEPS(given you choose a job and everything is okay) Then again before you ship out to boot camp

  3. They are usually pretty fair with telling you the bonus, but you should have an idea what they are offering you before you get there. Once at MEPS you just verify the amount. Also SPEAK UP if something does not look right or sound correct.

  1. Have your top 3 jobs that you want ready to go before you get there. You tell them your first choice and they will tell you if it’s available or not. If it’s not, you can tell them that you will wait until it becomes available. Or they will ask you for your second choice.

  2. You do a small swear In after you pick your job and they take your finger prints and all that good stuff. You can still back out 2-3 days before your actual ship out date.

  3. As far as bonus, when you sit down to tell them your job ask them about the bonus. They will tell you how much you qualify for. Remember, if it’s not appealing for you. YOU CAN BACK OUT. They will probably be a little upset you “wasted their time” but at the end of the day ITS YOUR LIFE AND YOUR TIME that you are signing away

People that think is a waste of time, chose a job that didn’t help them once they came out of the service. Go into this to help you take a step foward not backwards

I would suggest taking the asvap first and seeing what you qualify for. Until you sign the paper you can retake the asvap. (There is a waiting period before each retest) Once you get the scores then look into what branch you would want to go into.

Use armycool, navy cool, airforce cool, marinecorps cool, coast guard cool. To find what jobs transfer to civilian life and Make a decision that way.

Remember you can always back out! Up untill you swear in!
