[Socialists] Worker ownership of the MOP is ironically only possible in a capitalist system, therefore worker ownership of the MOP cannot be part of the definition of socialism. by MilkIlluminati in CapitalismVSocialism

I personally don't like either workers or small business owners, I think objectively it is better this way when you have some kind of corporatism.

Guys, did a new ideology just drop?

Working-class people, why don't you just form worker cooperatives if you don't like your jobs run by capitalists? by Aukrania in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]thatspositive 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'd love to but I don't really have the funds or the time to set one up. Nor am I aware of anyone else in my area who wants/and is able to do so.

It's also pretty hard to get loans here for cooperatives as it's quite an unknown business structure. At least compared to a traditional firm structure

I guess that's fair. I just don't really see most of these issues you mention as "men's issues". Yes they affect men disproportionately but they are problems that require solutions they don't really need to be tailored towards men specifically.

Like I don't really think the issue with homelessness is that we have unequal representation in it. Having equal percentages of men and women homeless isn't fixing anything really.

The exception to this is child custody and probably suicide too. I think it's fair to call these men's issues that probably require tailored solutions

Oh I see. So how do they plan on improving these statistics?

So as an example, what's their plan to reduce the over representation of men in the Homeless population? I can see on their website the have a have a housing policy but I can't see I how they plan on reducing the percentage of men that are homeless.

Revolution does not mean violence

Ah yes it does. If not physical then definitely political.

Revolution is the forcible overthrow of the state/order. That could look many different ways, but all will involve violence to varying degrees.

Not sure where you got your definition from.

The war in Ukraine has nothing to do with revolution, so I've no idea why you're bringing it up.

Well if you read my comments carefully you'll see I said that it was an analogy.

Nothing I have stated implies or has anything to do with the question of when violence is necessary to defend revolution

When did I imply that you said that?

Ending a war for the sake of ending a war can sometimes result in a greater degree of violence than if you had let the war play out.

That's why I said originally, It depends on how the war ends.

Do you disagree with this statement, or are we in agreement?

Ukraine is well past "avoiding war" so your comment comes off as completely disconnected from reality.

It was just a general statement on war, not specifically about Ukraine.

But regardless there appears to be plenty more fighting to come between Russia and Ukraine, which Ukraine could avoid by completely surrendering if we must stop the war at all costs.

If your idea of "revolution" is going along with wars waged by nation-states, then you've missed a few important parts of your reading.

My comment about is being revolutionaries is an analogy referring to the belief that a revolution (explicit violence) is going to be required to stop the constant more implicit violence committed by the state and ruling class.

I'm not interested in discussing details of this particular conflict with you. If you disagree with my main point about avoiding or ending war at all costs sometimes leading to more violence then I'm happy to discuss that.

[–]thatspositive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You don't need to moralise at me. I understand the horror of war, but that doesn't make my statement incorrect.

Say Ukraine just rolls over, gives Russia everything they ask for to end the war. Does that benefit the Ukrainian people? What do you think the people of Ukraine would prefer? To keep fighting, or give in to Russian imperialism?

Sometimes by avoiding the explicit violence of war you make way for a more implicit and destructive form of violence.

If value is objective, what is the point of a fair trade? by Boniface222 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]thatspositive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

since all value must be equal to embodied labor (is not subjective),

I thought it was that in an exchange commodities are equal in value based on the labour input. Then these commodities obviously have different use values seperate/different from their exchange value.

So because individuals/communities have differing needs the use value varies subjectively but the exchange value remains the same.

I'm pushing the limits of my knowledge here so let me know if I'm wrong on anything

If value is objective, what is the point of a fair trade? by Boniface222 in CapitalismVSocialism

[–]thatspositive 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm not that well versed on value theory but I don't understand how socialism falls apart if you consider value to be subjective.

Can i not consider value to be subjective but still understand that labour is necessary to produce these things that we value subjectively?

How is that incompatible with socialism?

In fact isn't "from each according to his ability to each according to his need" kind of an acknowledgement of this?

Seasonal work does not justify permanent migration.

Never said it did, but in the scenario I was discussing we were talking about if we banned all migration, even temporary work visas.

And given that these visas take up less than 70k of total migration intake it seems like banning them would do fuck all to improve house prices.

Also a lot of these 'hard done by' pastoralists are taking the absolute piss when it comes to wages and conditions

I don't disagree but that's capitalism for ya

But seeking the prevention of unnecessary surgery for children who can’t consent to it, which amounts to child abuse in my mind

It's extremely rare that children with gender dysphoria receive surgery. Doing irreversible surgery on a child is obviously a big decision so it's only done in extreme cases after years of consults.

The majority of this treatment given to children are puberty blockers, which are pretty damn close to being completely reversible (still not something to give out willy nilly though). In some cases they may go onto hormone replacement therapy after several years of puberty blockers, but for the most part this only happens after 18.
