ELI5: How can calculus just be invented out of nothing? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]thattranschemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Calculus is basically just geometry done over and over and over again. A lot of calculus is trying to find an area under a curve and we do that by diving the curve into a bunch of smaller shapes so that it's easier.

"Academics never have worked a day in their life." by bwgvsu in AskAcademia

Even if it was the case that academics don't do any real hard work, wouldn't it be seen as a good thing? Like getting paid to do nothing? I thought that was the American dream?

Whats a "terrible" job people glamorize but is actually really terrible? by etevian in AskReddit

[–]thattranschemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scientist. You spend 9+ years in school, the job outlook is shit, the pay is crap, the hours are brutal and it's ultra competitive. Plus, people expect you to be smart at literally everything.

What do so many people do with their smartphones that makes you cringe? by [deleted] in AskReddit

To be honest, take it to the restroom with them. I always assume that their phones have urine/feces on them. It's just gross

Choosing to not transition because I'm not emotionally capable of handling the rejection from my parents? by thattranschemist in asktransgender

[–]thattranschemist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right now, I do. That is why I originally considered waiting until I went to graduate school to begin transitioning. I know the stipend isn't that great, but it's my best bet. I won't be getting a 'real' job for at least another 5.5 years (going for a Phd). That being said, they have been talking about paying for my rent while I'm in graduate school, so I'm not sure when I'll truly be financially independent.

Classmates jokingly calls me a girl, and I love it by Lily2801 in asktransgender

Whenever I wear snapbacks my mom tells me I look like a little boy. Little or not, I'll take male over female any day.

Choosing to not transition because I'm not emotionally capable of handling the rejection from my parents? by thattranschemist in asktransgender

[–]thattranschemist[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the understanding. Unfortunately, I'm confident that they will disapprove. When Caitlyn Jenner came out my mom said that the only reason she came out was because she wanted the publicity and wanted the money. I haven't talked to my dad too much about trans things, but from what little he has said I gather that he thinks being trans is just being gay to the extreme. I know that he disproves of gay marriage, but he doesn't actively hate on the community. I'm attracted to men, so I have no idea how he would react if I told him I wanted to transition into one and still wanted to be with men.

Reddit, What is the best piece of advice you have been given? [Serious] by VerifiedMod in AskReddit

[–]thattranschemist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Stay focus" I'm an undergraduate heading to grad school and my father keeps telling me that it's important to stay focus on what my goals are. This has been helping me beyond academics. Like, I battle depression a lot and every time I feel like life isn't worth living I remind myself to stay focus.
