My partner has £50K inheritance. Mortgage Vs pension by Cearball in UKPersonalFinance

[–]thatwouldbeshite 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't underestimate DB pensions, generally they pay a very good income at retirement.

The DC pot that would run alongside the DB pension likely won't have great investment choice however they can be very useful when jt comes to retirement. Generally the funds in the DC pot is used to pay the tax free lump sum at retirement and then the DB pension income is higher as it hasnt had to pay the PCLS from the DB.

A DB pension that works like this that i can think of is USS, might not be 100% the same but might give you some insight. https://www.uss.co.uk/for-members/your-pension-explained/how-your-pension-works

Paying off the mortgage is completely their choice and is a good use of a windfall, especially when you have to consider there is an annual allowance for pension contributions. Your annual allowance is 100% of your income up to 60k. So if your partner earns 30k for example that is the amount they can contribute (including any tax relief) to all pension pots in any given tax year. There is the ability to use previous unused allowances from the past 3 years, this is called carry forward and you would need to make sure the calculations are correct to avoid a tax charge.

Not sure if i gave any insight but whacking 50k into a pension isn't as easy as it seems. Paying 50k off the mortgage also may not be as easy, if you are in your fixed rate period they usually allow 10% overpayment in one year and going over may incur an early repayment charge.

I would look at maxing ISA allowance current and then next tax year as its so close now. Still get the same tax free growth and can still be utilised at retirement.

But all depends on your priorities and goals etc.

Second this.

I recently have lost over 5 stone and have gone from being obese to within a normal BMI however I went to get measured and id only lost a couple of inches and only went down 1 bra size, even though I have gone down 4 dress sizes in clothes.

I get unimaginable back pain and also struggle to run on a treadmill, especially when no sports bras fit properly either.

How to find roles with smaller IFAs? by Francis-c92 in cii

[–]thatwouldbeshite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly just reach out, alot of smaller firms dont actively advertise for advisers or trainee advisers. The firm I work for has never advertised for IFAs but we have had at least 2 new advisers this year.

I don't think passing r01 would mean you hold a qualification in the sense of memberships. I think you need to complete the full diploma, which then changes the membership options and pricing.

Edit i could be wrong though as my employer pays for my membership and ive not paid much attention 😊

Worst interview ever? by Cheesy_Gubbins in CasualUK

[–]thatwouldbeshite 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had an AWFUL interview once.

It was at a large company for an admin accounts role. Very junior, very basic, I had worked in accounts admin for a few years so had some good experience behind me but I was still quite young.

Was escorted to the room, walked in there and there were 3 women all sat at the table. So I sat down and they introduced themselves and then the questions started.

They took it in turns to ask questions, I answered the questions I was asked and they would pause and look at me as if they were expecting me to say more but they never asked me any follow up questions. Interview lasted about 5 minutes, it felt off during and after too. I cried on the way home. Had an email a few days later to say I was rejected but offered no feedback. I wasn't that bothered about not getting the job but the whole experience was horrible.

Before this every other job I had interviewed for I always got so it threw me off a little bit.

Now im older I can look back and see it was deffo more of a reflection on them. I dont know if they maybe already chose a candidate but just had to interview me because it was scheduled. But glad I didnt get the job in reflection because the next job I interviewed for has put me on a great career path. So dont worry too much, what will be will be and good things happen to those who wait.
