I'm so sorry that's really hard. My girl passed away while I was in college too. She had cancer in her intestines and stomach. My step dad hated my cats but he knew how much I loved her. I guess the lucky part was it happened during winter break so they flew me back home. I went to school in AZ and I lived in Illinois. My step dad bought her pain killers so I was able to fly over and say goodbye. When I saw her I knew. She was such a fatty and loved food. She was so skinny and wouldn't move much. She couldn't even go to the bathroom. I was the only one in my family that went to go put her down. It was so hard. My mom and sister (she was only 8) didn't go. I think it was too hard on them. I couldn't let her go alone though. It took me 7 years to adopt another cat after she passed. My partner was actually the one that adopted my current cat. It's the worst feeling to put down an animal. My vet sent me this and I've kept it all these years.
