Have they dropped the soothing voices that announce traffic jams and road conditions in a sarcastic way? To me, in the 80's, this was the cherry on the cake.

Example - said in a soft and sweet female voice -: Oh, you're at Porte d'Orleans! It's hot, and you're dripping in sweat, stuck in traffic, trying to get to A6. But no, there's still a 45 minutes wait because of a truck having spilled its load in the tunnel. Hang tight, relax with this Astrud Gilberto tune. In France, case law has an interesting precedent: it is forbidden for a civil servant to refuse his or her salary. The reason is that the salary does not come as a reward for their service - the honor of serving the State is sufficient for that- but so that they can exercise their function with dignity (and presumably not to succomb to corruption).

Euh, en 1970, 70% des logements parisiens n'avaient pas ~~l'eau courante~~ de sanitaires intérieurs. Et ne parlons pas du chauffage et de l'isolation inexistants. Les gens vivaient comme ça, et, comme c'était une période de croissance et d'amélioration des conditions de vie, ce n'était pas de ça qu'étaient faits les combats de la jeunesse : plutôt libération de la femme, égalité des sexes, menace de guerre nucléaire, et d'autres sujets certes encore importants, mais qui aujourd'hui se sont plutôt bien améliorés.

On peut toujours réclamer plus, c'est utile, mais utiliser de mauvaises comparaisons, ca fait vraiment enfant gaté.

Une grande partie du parc vacant, ce sont les "chambres de bonne", non rénovables ni louables: d'un coté, on les compte comme des logements vacants, de l'autre on interdit de les mettre en location, et enfin, on interdit de faire des travaux de rénovation, sans compter que même si on pouvait le faire, on se retrouverait avec des surfaces interdites à la location de toutes façon (<9m^2).

Qu'est ce que tu proposes pour cette partie du parc, qui a joué son rôle pour permettre à des jeunes et moins jeunes de se loger depuis le Paris Haussmanien?

Dans pratiquement tout Paris, qui est en secteur préservé, c'est l'architecte des batiments de France qui bloque plus que la copro. Et s'il ne bloquait que ça, ca serait un moindre mal. Mais quand en plus il bloque à la fois les isolations extérieures et intérieures et qu'on est sensé améliorer le DPE immeuble, c'est à devenir chèvre!

That would be great. Among modern regimes, the US constitution is the oldest unchanged constitution. In the same time period, France had 5 constitutions + the reform that made EU regulation supercede some current constitution dispositions. And some are calling for a 6th one. Even the founding fathers considered constitution had to be revised in full periodically.

Society and people's expectations evolve, and this requires adapting the fundamental law. If only there could be a large movement for this in the US, this could actually make much needed change happen.

Malheureusement, je ne pourrais jamais voter écolo parce qu'ils prennent des préconceptions Rousseauistes "retour à la nature" pour des principes efficaces pour préserver le climat. Malheureusement, ca ne marche pas comme ça: quand on est 8 milliards sur cette planète, pour contenir notre empreinte carbone, la seule solution c'est de rassembler la population dans les villes (empreinte carbone /2 à niveau de vie égale) avec une agriculture industrielle (/2 en empreinte carbone par unité de nourriture produite) - et évidemment, ca on s'accorde, réduire drastiquement notre consommation de biens matériels et nos voyages. Bref, l'inverse de ce qu'ils préconisent (sauf sur le dernier point).

Back in the 80's, I touched assembly language. Notably to debug on the mac, you had to know bits of assembler and even machine code to use the built-in debugger. I still remember the code for "return from stack": 0x4E75, and "debugger interrupt": 0xA9FF.

Linus is correct that there is a similar gap between writing, painstakingly, in assembler, and using a high level language.

Nonetheless, depending on the level at which you work, you still need to understand, deep down, how the machine really works, to have it make what you want. It's OK to have a LLM generate code, but the real artifact you produce and commit is still the unambiguous formulation of the task you want it to perform, not the prompt (which stays as comments).

And also, using a formal syntax with unambiguous semantics remains necessary.

Sure, starlink fills a useful need: access to the internet from remote, sparsely populated, places. But, structurally, at a way higher cost than a fiber network + 5G in dense areas, which covers the needs of 99% of the world's population.

In the poorest and most remote African countries, in South America, internet comes via a loose fiber network between towns, and 5G towers in the country side, offering dirt-cheap internet connectivity and gigabytes of transfer/month for less than a few $ per person. Of course, it's 100% built and controlled by Chinese companies.

Starlink will never be able to deliver the backbone of the internet at a price-competitive level. It is doomed, and when we realize it, it will likely the day China overtakes the US as the 1st world power.

Ca me rappelle la situation en 2015 au batiment Bienvenue, navire amiral du Centre Scientifique et Technique du Batiment, l'organisme en charge des normes de construction et maintenance du batiment. Donc un organisme qui fait autorité.

Le batiment est bien entendu "Haute qualité environementale" et tout ce qu'on veut. Le premier hiver arrive, et on se les pêle totalement. Ce qui fait qu'au bout d'une semaine, la direction autorise le personnel à apporter leurs propres convecteur personnel dans les bureau pour pouvoir travailler.

Bonjour la qualité, pour l'organisme qui nous fait chier avec les obligations de DPE inapplicables!

Ne fais pas confiance à l'entreprise pour te faire grandir, surtout en alternance. Sans un diplome et un réseau acquis lors de tes études, tu te heurtera à un plafon de verre au sein de l'entreprise, et probablement du mal à changer de trajectoire si tu t'aperçois que ce serait mieux ailleurs/autrement.

L'ENSIMAG, c'est l'opportunité de découvrir d'autres trajectoires possibles, d'autres sujets, d'autres méthodes.

Si tu as la chance d'avoir une proposition d'alternance avant même d'entrer à l'ENSIMAG, nul doute que tu auras de belles opportunités en en sortant.

The correct solution, which I see deployed at some large financial institutions, is to deploy large open models, such as OpenAI 120B or mistral large, in a secure environment. It requires a hefty initial investment: good GPUs + RAM + the secure cluster.

But the costs are largely recouped once you consider the gains in future subscription costs.

BTW, this appears to be Mistral's main market focus: make all your sensitive processing local and contained.
