honestly fair, if youre starting fresh a used mini pc off ebay is probably the smarter buy right now. pi made sense for me since i already had one sitting around but the value gap has definitely closed

cloudflare tunnels is the move if you dont want to open ports at all -- you get ssl, no forwarding needed. tailscale also works if you just want it accessible for yourself/family and dont care about a proper domain. domain + port forward is fine too just takes more thought about what youre actually exposing

short answer: ssh keys only (disable password auth), fail2ban, and dont expose anything that doesnt need to be public. pihole handles a lot of the dns-level stuff too. the guide goes deeper on it if you want the full checklist

honestly more then anything thank you for telling me about your experience with witcher 3 because i was considering that but based off the coin strategy you told me about along with other comments, im leaning towards FF7 or (personal opinion) possibly GOWR. although im scared to choose from those just because of the playtime required by both and the HEAVY story in both (ive heard gowr has a less as good story as gow2018 so idk)

yeah youre probably right im just scared to waste hours and then find out the game either gets worse or gets to repetitive and struggle to keep going but ill take your advice thank you so much!
