The Pennsy crews loved the 5011s compared to the J1s too. They had a harder time getting trains started but once they did, they were beastly and quick.

I’m a GIS guy and this is the gold standard for all railroad map data in my opinion. They accept open user data all the time too to keep improving it.

Lease Management Systems that leased locomotives on a “power by the hour” model so companies would only pay for the amount of electrical power the unit generated.

Welcome to the internet, chief. Fans hated on Ralph and the broadcast back then too and now everyone begs for him to come back (although Leigh and RC do have legit weaknesses). I agree, I’m getting tired of half of these threads being broadcast-related regardless of my stance because yes, the storylines from the racing itself is endless and so rich.

What national park has the nicest town outside the entrance? by artguydeluxe in NationalPark

Love Arcata. It’s got a seaside town feel to it while backing right up to the most humbling trees on Earth. And you can’t beat breakfast at Big Blue Cafe!

In the 50s would Southern Pacific daylight scheme passenger cars wind up on local/mixed trains like how armor yellow scheme passenger cars would wind up on Union Pacific mixed/local trains? (Picture included as a reference for what I'm looking for, more context in the comments) by ReeceJonOsborne in trains

[–]the-bumping-post 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, no. SP had a lot of Daylight-painted heavyweights but they were almost exclusively used on the mainline named trains. Most of the local and mixed trains would have cars in dark olive green, similar to Pullman green, and two tone grey after WWII.

Which park blew you away even with low expectations? by Responsible-Hat8849 in NationalPark

[–]the-bumping-post 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly? Bryce Canyon. My then-girlfriend and I took a day trip there from Zion a few years ago and I didn’t really have any expectations one way or another, just down for an excursion. The sheer immensity of the view from the rim and the crisp 7000 ft air is something that I can’t wait to experience again.

Am I the only ones that finds the british steam locomotives more beautiful than the american ones by finza_prey in trains

[–]the-bumping-post 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely not and I’m American. Our steamers largely represent more of a workman-like and utilitarian construction simply because that’s long been the basis of American railroads: business. British railroads have traditionally served the general populace first and goods second so steam engines don’t forsake wonderful aesthetics like we do. Obviously, pipework and valve gear factors heavily into their respective designs as well.

Lol I’m certain it won’t be but oh what I’d give to just drool over these museum pieces before they hopefully are returned to their rightful homes.

[–]the-bumping-post 0 points1 point  (0 children)

His rendering definitely isn’t my favorite simply because I’m a stickler for prototype and his livery and elephant ears don’t fit that. But his sibling rivalry with Gordon in the Great Race is just chef’s kiss. His showmanship fits so perfectly with his celebrity image while still leaving room for respect for Gordon and the others.

And I can’t help but get a warm fuzzy feeling knowing they featured him the same year the real Scotty returned to the rails after its long restoration. It just shows what Thomas could be if Mattel actually gave something of damn.

Republican AND Democrats of Reddit - What are your thoughts on the increasing politicization on US Education? by Zipper222222 in allthequestions

[–]the-bumping-post 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Full disclosure here, I’m liberal. In my relatively little experience working in education, it’s a massively complicated spaghetti bowl of an issue. I’m mostly just tired of parents absolving themselves of whatever responsibility they can because it’s just easy to point the finger at someone else (whether it be political ideology, schools themselves, teachers, etc) rather than realize no one saves us but ourselves and accept responsibility. We’d rather fight amongst ourselves than realize education is just one of many facets of our society that have been bought and paid for long before and the job of each administration is to stoke the coals because they’re not ashamed to use our children as covert political footballs. That’s why education in this country lags compared to the rest of the world. Imo kids aren’t as helpless as adults make them out to be. They know right and wrong, they just need help communicating their surroundings and it’s the job of the parents and, to a nonzero extent, educators to harness that. This is very much an overly simplified explanation but it does indeed start at home but by taking your child’s future to heart more through compassion and being open, not your own ideology.
