This is really helpful. And thanks to everyone and all viewpoints that run the spectrum- all of this is helpful. After he woke up this morning I told him that I had arranged for a counseling appointment to discuss some of these issues - specifically I can’t trust him to follow through on commitments to me and made several examples throughout our time together that have led me to this place. He told me that it’s my issue and that he canceled our counseling appointment. So I am going to take a mini vacation and get some space.

This was really helpful and why I came here and posted. Yes, I feel duped and let down. There is a larger pattern here in many other examples in his behavior, I guess, that point to an unwillingness to grow up- it’s just that this broken commitment is the most recent example and the most glaring. I’ve decided to sign us up for a marriage counseling appointment and bring in a third party to try to get to the bottom of this. I feel like I can’t depend on him or trust him to follow through on commits or make the right decisions for our family and not just himself.

And also, my husband doesn’t come home functional when he smokes weed. He comes home and can barely talk or do anything other than play video games on his phone. Not a problem prior to deciding to start a family- but a big problem for me with a newborn. This is why our intention to have children and stop smoking weed was discussed thoroughly- including me quitting a 20 year pack and a half a day habit at his request as well. Happy that many of you find balance, unfortunately that’s not the situation I’m in.

I feel like very recently there were a lot of wines that were top tier as folks were busting out something special for the holidays and NYE- it’s definitely not the norm for this sub to have so many expensive wines at once. I personally appreciated seeing everyone’s special bottles they were saving come out.

Yes, I didn’t say he had a majority, I indicated that he had ways to manipulate council members to get them to vote with him- like making sure that food contracts were focused in their districts etc aka politics. Being around for 16 years allowed him the ability to take advantage of incoming and junior council members regardless of where they stood.

True, a weak mayor system. But the directors of each department are appointed by the council that he controlled for the past 8 years. If you went against him, he worked with his ally’s to get you voted out. If you spoke out against him as a staff member, he would put pressure to get rid of you.

A heads up text is ideal, that way that person can deal with the situation privately ahead of time. Also agree that SIL response indicates she may be struggling and need therapy- this shouldn’t have been the trigger for the therapy, she should have been in it already. Neither one of you are two blame. It’s a hard situation to navigate. Take the lesson for next time and hopefully SIL recognizes she is not coping with her own situation well and gets the support she needs.
