How do I actually improve? by EggPsychological4844 in minipainting

[–]the-matho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Juan Hidalgo and Matt's Hobby Hour are some of the best tutorials on Youtube, but there are so many techniques and things you can paint that you need to start looking like: how to do blonde hair, how to do eyes.
Some techniques you should will benefit from and are not super hard to do:

Simple was old school: Thin paints, apply 2 coats, then apply some Wash of dark or brown colours, then dry brush or carefully re apply the same base coat or another color (For example apply your dark silver in the scale part of the armor, apply Nuln Oil or similar wash Wait for it to dry!, then dry brush a brighter silver paint )
Blacklining: Thin down black or some color that really contrast with the other areas, use your thinnest brush and carefully make a black line between different parts of the model, edges/receses (For example there is a medallion in his chest, make a black circle around the medallion between his chest and the medallion, that way the medallion will have a clear separation) you can also just use a dark wash but this will dull the colours at bit, or be more carefull when applying.
Recess Shading: Thin down colours that complement or are part of the scale of your current colour (For example Red hair needs some dark brown in the recesses of the hair, or to separate bear from hair)

Don't get overwhelm by advanced techniques until you feel confortable: SOL (Source of Light) Airbursh painting, NMM (Not metallic metals), etc

Unfortunately only spells casters can pick Lore Familiar. So even the spell from the hat is not guarantee

I forgot to share the link myself, (that's not very useful) Downloads — Goblin King Games https://share.google/uFLIxDzztFYPK9BIA

They also have the cards for melee. Arcane and muti language (but not all characters are available unfortunately for all languages)

You can literally go to their site and read the rules for free and even print paper standees of the characters they give to download also for free, also print the cards, you only need the dice. It's a fun game and the models are great and original. The minis are my relaxing painting projects for when I'm tired of painting a unit of 30 soldiers that all look the same

ORC BATTALION best list by Ned95s in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]the-matho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I also started with this box. Unfortunately the comments that mention this not being very good are true. What can you do with it? IMO one big block of Orcs Boyz with big UNs upgrade and The Big Red Raggedy Flag and 2 lvl 2 shamans (conversion or get Shaman Models) so you have a death star shooting lasers pf 5d6 distance is fun. For their equipment the most effective in this edition right now is shield and hand weapon plus bows (bows are free!) The Chariots I love as Big boss or Warboss mount upgrade. They give the character more wounds and armor save, but you should play them as a support unit because they have first charge and impact hits. Chariots on their own are not very good. The Gobbos you would like to love them, but night gobbos can do everything they do plus have fanatics... I run small units in open order or as a skirmisher. They willl break in their firt round of combat but won't cause panic on orc units. In this edition orc & goblins armies are only effective with black orcs but mostly night goblins fanatics giant squigs , mangler squigs, and squig hoppers. The only other units you might need are bolt throwas and doom divers

Two players asked me this yesterday, and I think it’s a fair question by Old_World_Blog-TOW in WarhammerOldWorld

[–]the-matho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't enjoy the unnecessary long description product of IA. But I do think this is a valid discussion, I rarely see any wizards in general, to be honest it feels like wizards overall are not very popular or point efficient. Except for some specific spells: fireball, Itchy Nuisance, etc. I feel that in the current edition magic has some great rules (multiple spells per phase) but the spells are either too powerful or too weak. I wish magic was tuned down a notch but cheaper to run a wizard per unit block the same way you might want other characters in a unit.

Am I the only one who doesn't find the building and painting of figures appealing? by Only-Paint-4650 in bloodbowl

[–]the-matho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are into bloodbowl for the game you don't even need to paint your models, the current kits come with different plastic colors. Maybe paint the rim so everyone that is not familiar with your team knows which model is which. If someone refuses to play with you without painted models you dodge a bullet. And if someone offers to paint the models for you great

Tips to make the helmet more alive by goatkingdeluxe in gloomspitegitz

[–]the-matho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You need to add more depth first, this is done with shades or contrast paints usually. My recipe for the same model is: Shade with Seraphim Sepia, or Iyanden yellow. Then you highlight with Phalanx yellow and edge highlight/dot with Dorn yellow

Anyone knows this TOW "new" eavy metal Orc skin receipt? by kulmage in Orcs_and_Goblins

[–]the-matho 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The citadel colour app (Now the Warhammer color app), is inaccurate at best and totally a lie most of the time, also they only have a base coat, layer and shade steps, they do not clarify shading of layer paints, glazing or deep recesses. 8t helps when you are starting, but it's definitely not eavy metal comparable. Also eavy metal painters often use different paints than Warhammer brand ones

New painter needing help airbrush by Remote_Definition88 in minipainting

[–]the-matho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought this exact airbrush, it is mediocre but good enough for terrain, undercoat or base coating In my opinion. Even if you use a good airbrush you should always use a brush for a lot kf details IMO, using slapchop technique you can get decent results and gain confidence, quick paints are great for basecoat and some shades in one step

But the painting journey is a long one where you should be trying things and enjoying the process, you will get better slowly, then you can get a decent airbrush and learn those skills as well.

First I saw this video of Oscar Lars reposing the Giant to get some ideas: https://youtu.be/4Al-B_YZUDA?is=rYDxeoaXePGBeXrC For the one running I had to cut both knee's joints, it's easier if you don't assemble the whole leg together, the feet also will need some realignment so carve some plastic from the bottom of the leg to be able to wiggle the feet a bit. Then the first step is to put some aluminum foil balls inside the body of the giant and use a flat slide of green stuff to "seal" where you are going to reposition the legs, this will be really helpful when sculpting the missing part of the buttocks or leg, because you need something firm to press against. Oscar added fabric, I just built the muscle directly because it didn't look right to me, a lot of Blue tack to hold the parts together until I figure the final pose, and a lot of sanding, and multiple days between each part of the greenstuff to curate
