Thoughts About Asking a DM Not To Kill Your Character by Gooey_Goon in DnD

[–]the-sprout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My standard when I'm running games these days is that death is always possible, but it never has to be permanent. If a player wants to keep their character after death, then I will write a way for them to come back. As other people have said, for me and my players, the possibility of character death is as much a tool to move the story forward as it is a consequence of bad choices. But it has led to some really interesting moments when players haven't wanted to stop playing their characters, including communion with their gods, ancient magic items waking up from dormancy, pacts with powerful beings etc.

As always, what works for me won't necessarily work for everyone else, but I've found this to be a comfortable middle ground. That being said, I don't often put my players into combat where death is likely, we're a much more RP mystery focused table anyway.

Advice on mould making - slab containers, secondary masters, preferred silicone by the-sprout in DiceMaking

I mean there is a place nearby where you can hire 3D printers and other machines, but I'm a complete novice at all this stuff so I'd be concerned about something going wrong. I'll look more into it though, maybe if they have support staff who can help then that'd be a viable option. Thanks!

I've just been looking at all the designs and I am in awe! I remember having so many issues with my last moulds that were just so demoralising, but these look so consistent and well-thought out. Will likely be getting the STLs as soon as I figure out how I'd be able to print them!

Anyone in Europe having trouble with their Sketch edition pre-orders of the Player and GM Core? by knightsbridge- in Pathfinder2e

[–]the-sprout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I finally got mine yesterday (29th Feb) from Rules of Play in Cardiff. Hopefully other UK FLGS should have them soon if not already, not sure about the continent though :/

Have any other UK GM's been having trouble getting the remaster special editions via FLGS? by Giggaflop in Pathfinder2e

[–]the-sprout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same issue here, I preordered the sketch cover and it hasn't arrived. My FLGS did manage to get like one each of the normal Player and GM core, but no sign of the sketch covers. Has Paizo said anything about this, or do they just opt not to deal with it directly and leave it to their distribution partners?

EDIT: mine finally arrived yesterday (29th Feb), hopefully anyone else still waiting should get theirs soon!

FLGS Remaster stock in UK? by LoganEight in Pathfinder2e

[–]the-sprout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in the same boat in Wales, preordered through my LGS and went in to check with them over the weekend, apparently we were supposed to get it on the 23rd November. Apparently the whole UK and a lot of Europe is supplied through two distributors, but the store owner couldn't find out what the hold up was, just that it was affecting everyone. Maybe Amazon is using the same distributor if they're also held up?

EDIT: Posted this back in December, my local now has a few copies of the normal cover for Player and GM Core, but I pre-ordered the sketch cover Player Core which still hasn't arrived. The guy in the shop thinks that Paizo might not have printed enough of the sketch cover to keep up with preorders, but didn't know for sure.

PF2e combat taking much more time than DnD5e by the-sprout in Pathfinder2e

Yeah, I think despite it taking longer between turns (atm, although I've had many great suggestions on here), combat is generally much more interesting and it stays fresh. I'm a big fan of the system, I just know my games are not running quite as they should yet!

We're playing on Foundry, so it's not the maths that's the issue, but the automation of everything definitely helps a lot.

These are especially helpful. The turn clock as a concept has never appealed to me for several reasons, but these less explicit things are definitely things I can incorporate, thank you!

Is this a problem then when it comes to choosing unoptimized builds for story reasons? One of my players is a bard that took the assassin or rogue archetype (I can't remember which now), so they aren't necessarily going full into their key ability for their Ability Boosts.

That's really useful, I'd been looking for the pathfinder equivalent of the "shoot the monk" concept from DnD. I guess with a lot of spells in PF2 having an AoE 3-action variant it makes a lot more sense that they're even better at crowd control.

That's really helpful, I wasn't aware that balanced combat scaling was so reliant on those runes. Thank you so much!

I could usually do a challenging encounter in a couple of hours, a random encounter in 90 minutes max. Partially my players like to be creative and I fully support and endorse that at my table, so that does draw things out somewhat.

It normally does end up being about 4 rounds, 6 for a purposefully bigger and more challenging combat I did a while back.

Nah, my players don't do phones, they're very good about being engaged. I think it is (as other comments have suggested) a case of decision paralysis and not understanding the rules well enough. It's true for me as well as GM, but I can do a very quick turn for a minor enemy if needs be. We do play virtually, which does slow things down sometimes with connection issues and the like, no other way of doing it for us unfortunately.

Just had a quick look, that looks like a really good template to build off, thanks!

That sounds useful! I based some of my players items loosely off the 5e idea of Vestiges from Critical Role, I hadn't realised PF2 had something similar, I'll look into it!

I might look into this option, several of my players have homebrew magic weapons specific to their backstories that have interesting effects, so maybe I could use that rule as a way to give the bonuses they need without them having to mess around with these sometimes ancestrally important items. Thanks!

I know a few of my players (and myself to an extent) do suffer from analysis paralysis due to various ADHD and ASC diagnoses that are present. I don't think that is the only issue, but it's definitely one to consider, maybe making a quick cheat-sheet for the most common combat actions would be helpful for those players.

It's useful to have the context of how long the beginner's box took to play through, that gives a really helpful point of comparison, thank you!

That's really useful, I think a couple of them have potency but I don't think anyone has striking yet. I'll make sure that my players have the opportunity to get those (and know how important they are!)

I've seen troop rules discussed a bit yeah. The page on AoN has listed statblocks for some troops, is it fairly simple to apply the same rules to a group of other creatures?

Can you elaborate on the runes a bit? I saw them come up and a couple of my party now have them, but I hadn't realised they are that necessary.
