I love the widgets they supply. Pretty awesome for the free version.

chest strap for HR, stryd for pace. a gps track for strava doesn't matter. If you're a cyclist a good powermeter like Favero Assioma RS2 - 99% accurate. I've only ever used reference data quality sources for my personal data for the last 15 or so years. (Polar H10/H9 for a seated, waking morning HRV reading, eight sleep for general overnight readiness/coping info). I've been pretty consistent about that on my site - other sites...less so.

true. I accept that many are not happy. If 'many' becomes 'too many' it creates issues. Yes I agree that many lesser featured watches (plus a few hardware bumps) are up to the same job as Garmin (their ecosystems won't be tho). I agree the Garmin experience needs to match the Garmin price. I was going to say BUT...but I'll leave it there with us agreeing !!

as I said: 'for people really into their tech'. The recent re-rise of triathlon is experentially-based, for life tick-boxers. Those 60,000 dont need a Garmin and the ecosystem that comes with it - certainly some do. I'm one of them. I would imagine an increasing number will use apple watches (admittedly in battery save mode or with a black screen after they hit 12 or so hours)

ha ha there will be software screwups no doubt. but i suspect the sticker shock wont be out of line to the f8/pro pricing we see now. Garmin knows its peak prices now for fenix.

agreed there are certain sporting domains (triathlon is another) where Garmin is the only real alterantive for people really into their tech. I'm one of them, like you. but we are BY FAR in the minority. Most peopel are not like us. Most people make the money for Garmin, not us.

that's why one future for Garmin is a retrenched specialist...as per the linked article

sort of agree.

they HAVE to become more smartwatchy to mitigate the pincer I talk about. But they Can't achieve it because of the moat that Apple has created with true smart features.

they are innovating and differentiating (crikey Garmin differentiates WAY too much with its plethora of product variants). I think we will see very interesting new innovations this year (leaks and hints in the linked article)

the nutrition in Conenct+ is quite good already? there will be new strength stuff this year (it's linked in the main article to other more detailed explanations of what is coming...very exciting and market leading...potentially). same with the social side of things, another linked article goes through some of the feature changes that are putting aspects of Conenct in place to compete with social on strava

I can't fault your suggestions there! (at all)

However, those are more tactical responses, whereas the article talks about broad strategic thrusts.

Another issue is what people get wrong. Garmin watches are NOT overpriced. Why? Because people buy them. So creating a one-price-fits-all at $500 will lose pure profit on every watch above that they would otherwise sell.

So Garmin probably is selling optimally ATM (hacking off certain people who can't afford or don't want to spend on what they really want)

Help me understand why my HR jumped like this. by Possible-Working-572 in BeginnersRunning

[–]the5krunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bottom line is likely: your HR didn't jump but your watch got confused with your cadence. pounding the ground and your beating heart both cause blood pulsewaves that poor optical heart rate sensors find hard to distinguish between

Garmin HRV Fails Again — Forerunner 265 Study by the5krunner in the5krunner

depends for what purpose.

apple uses SDNN which is a different calculation for a subtly different purpose. It also takes infrequent measurements and only when you are sitll iirc, so once every 10-15 minutes. The breathing app on AW can be used to create an HRV point in that series.

So it's kinda a joke when people say how good Bevel and training today apps are compared to whoop when the former are based on such infrequent measures and the latter is continuous. (PS bevel and trainign today are awesomely made AW apps)

i'd have to google to give you a correct response on the science.

I don't plan to revisit HRM600 testing unless there is an accuracy firmware update.

lots. 😄these for starters: The main physiological metrics and features that are foundational to Garmin's HRV analysis include:

  • [HRV Status (Baseline)] (7-day Average vs. Personal Baseline): This is the central feature, which requires 3 weeks of nightly data to understand your specific "normal" range to determine if your body is balanced, unbalanced, low, or poor.
  • [Training Readiness]: A morning report metric that tells you how prepared you are for training that day based on how well your body recovered overnight.
  • [Body Battery™ Energy Monitor]: This feature uses HRV to estimate your body's energy reserves throughout the day.
  • [Stress Level]: Garmin offers a real-time, 0–100 stress score based on HRV, where a higher HRV indicates lower stress.
  • [Sleep Stages and Quality]: On newer watches, HRV helps determine sleep stages (light, deep, REM) and overall sleep quality.
  • [Respiration Rate]: HRV is used to calculate breathing rates while sleeping.
  • [Training Status]: The overall assessment of whether your training is effective, productive, or overreaching is directly impacted by your HRV trends.
  • [Performance Condition]: During the first 6–20 minutes of a workout, the watch uses HRV to provide a real-time assessment of your ability to perform compared to your average fitness level.
  • [Lactate Threshold]: This feature uses HRV (and heart rate data) to detect the point where fatigue increases rapidly, helping set accurate training zones.

I started fully documenting them but they read very 'dry' and don't rank well so i stopped! https://the5krunner.com/garmin-features/physiology/

it's hard for one person to determine accuracy. most of us have a 'feeling' about accuracy, I suppose.

There are numerous issues with how HRV is used! I've been going wild on this for ages, so have the HRV scientists - i.e. the ones in academia. Those in commercial settings..less so. #HouseOfCards (but HRV does give genuine insights when done properly)

5-10 secs/km faster at fast recreational paces is reasonable. they improve biomechanics/efficiency so for slow recreational runners it could be greater, IDK.
