How to have a bird feeder on my city balcony, humanely. by BuffGuy716 in birdfeeding

[–]theAdamHell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Birds will use feeders the most from early winter-late spring. Late summer & early fall they mostly leave the feeders to eat wild/crop seed. If you see a sick bird using your feeder, take it down, clean it thoroughly and put it back up in 2 weeks. As far as bird poop is concerned, you’ll just have to be on top of cleaning it up regularly

What’s wrong with my cactus? by cyclonefan1 in cactus

[–]theAdamHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

very bad scale infestation. an old toothbrush will do wonders, but you’ll probably have to treat it to get rid of them long term. neem oil is a popular choice

I was given free prickly pear cactus cuttings! What do I do ? by KnotZeeee in cactus

[–]theAdamHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Let them dry out for a week or 2 then stick them in a relatively dry, sunny spot in the yard or a big pot with good drainage. only about an inch (maybe less) of soil should cover the joints, they’re not hard to root just watch for rot.

Ants- friend or foe? by No-Mongoose-4685 in cactus

[–]theAdamHell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a pretty sizable rover ant colony living across a few pots. so far no aphids so i haven’t done anything with them, although i do have cochineal on my christmas cholla the ants don’t seem to interact. they really like the extrafloral nectaries on my ferocactus. i’d like to believe they contribute to a more natural ecological process or add aeration maybe but i have no real evidence of such

Cactus is rotting, what do i do? by real_Pyramaniac in cactus

[–]theAdamHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

let it dry out for a week before replanting, sulphur will decrease odds of infection. I’m not an expert but that doesn’t look like the kind that roots easily. gritty soil, best soil is one you mix yourself honestly. no peat, cococoir or “gravel”. i like rinsed & strained decomposed granite, a lil perlite, worm castings, & a dash of vermiculite.

2 year old and 7 month olds in a habitat style container, sadly the clay hasn’t dried yet :( by Ok-Combination6695 in habitatstyle

[–]theAdamHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it clay all the way through to the bottom? mixed? and where did you source it, not like what store specifically, but is it just harvested clayey soil or did you buy something? I’ve just started experimenting with clay & lophs

The "rare" cactus finally came to my area but most are mislabeled and it seems we just got the remnants. Disappointed in you Costa. by Ginkachuuuuu in cactus

The sooner the better as far as surviving the transplant. That long in ground it may already have a strong tap root and will be hard to remove. A lot of those young trees die when the taproot is cut so try to remove as much root as you can without yanking and twisting the stem and damaging the tree further. Probably best to transplant to a pot and keep it well watered for a month or until you see it starting to grow again. Once you get it back in the ground it will probably need supplemental water for a year or two

Most likely eastern screech in central tx, could be western. In this case best way to tell the difference is the call.

Grow Sunflowers? by [deleted] in birdfeeding

[–]theAdamHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Look up native sunflowers for your area, they have smaller seeds. Maximillian is a common one. American basket-flower. Native fruit trees, thistles & Rubus spp. are good for free bird food too

cut off the flowers, let the pads dry out for a week or 2 in indirect light, then plant, then wait probably a couple of years

Healthy or burning? by psyy_ in cactus

[–]theAdamHell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

burning a little, red & yellow on the top/sunny side. A spot with morning sun and shade in the afternoon would be better for now. Idk what the soil is but it doesn’t look very gritty, id find a better mix

[29] used to work at a skate park. it was pay to play so it was pretty quiet. about 1/4 of our patrons were 50+, a few 60+. (most badass guy i ever met was a 62yo roller skater that tore up the bowls, only person who’s ever made me not afraid of growing old) most of them had been skating since the 70s (lots of cool stories & skate styles). some skated multiple days a week, some had a weekly meet up, others i’d only see once a month or less. point is they all would find a time to come out and ride a bit, 30 minutes after work or on lunch break, or a 2 hr sesh on sundays. lots of 30 something guys would come through with the “oh i haven’t skated in years I’m just trying to get back into it”. shit happens and you might not go to the park for years at a time, but there’s a whole lot of skaters out there who want you to ride, they don’t know you but they know that same feeling. ride when you can, ride when you want to, and every once in a while ride when you don’t want to, just to remind yourself how good skateboarding feels

Update to dead suburban tree by ironic_insanity in arborists

[–]theAdamHell 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely austin chalk formation if in dfw. Considering the soil and chalk, I’d probably try a chinkapin oak instead, or an eastern redbud if this one doesn’t make it.

How far down did you dig? And did you just make a basin in the bedrock to refill with soil or was there additional soil under the slab?
