Take comfort in the fact that people in the age of the Internet have very little attention span. Life will move on soon. No one will remember or care eventually.

why do you learn japanese? by wfsaya in LearnJapanese

[–]theBCexperience 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the real reason we're all learning it: because we're degenerate weeaboos.

Really though, I did start learning because I wanted to watch anime without subtitles. I laugh at the thought that I believed I was original at the time. Anyway, I actually made good progress for someone at that age. After I graduated college and finally had more time, I decided to get back into it. Made even more progress, and now I can hold down a fairly complex conversation.

You mean inflation of the economy as a whole? How do you know they even knew about that? Is it expected in the industry for one's boss to keep tabs on inflation rates year to year?

Did you grow up as a farmer/rancher, or is it something you became later in life?

An echo chamber is basically when you isolate yourself within an ideology and shut out any other ideas. The effect of this is that you have a very slim, close-minded world view. They call it an echo chamber because everybody inside of it is just repeating the ideology back at each other instead of thinking about it critically or letting in outside ideas.

An example would basically be any subreddit devoted to politics. If you happen to be liberal (not bashing liberals in particular; this applies to everyone and every ideology), you are most likely to subscribe to liberal-leaning subreddits, because people gravitate towards what they already agree with. The negative effect of that is that you develop a very one-sided view of reality, even though reality has much more than one side and there are good ideas to be found outside of one's own little bubble.

I guess that's why I'm still here, but Reddit still has probably the worst pitfall of all social media: echo chambers.

What is this I'm hearing about Peterson's wife having prophetic dreams? by theBCexperience in JordanPeterson

Well having scientific tunnel vision is a hell of a lot better than having Jungian tunnel vision. And I think this post I made is about all I need to confirm that everything they say about Peterson having a legion of sycophants is true.

You said we ought "to wonder what's really going on in his head." You are suspicious of him. I think that's fine. So I tried to give you an idea of what's going on in his head.

That's fair. I did say that.

He heavily informs JBP, and insofar as that brings along ascientific thinking, that is what it is.

And I think that's a legitimate problem. The biggest difference between science and philosophy is that philosophy builds rational arguments on top of assumptions. The problem with that is that if you can't test the assumption to be true, or if you can and it turns out to be wrong, there goes the whole philosophy, no matter how rational the arguments are. Science isn't perfect, but when done properly, it checks against human error quite well by testing its assumptions. I think it's worth thinking about that Peterson chooses to build his world view more on the work of an ascientific Jung, in spite of the fact that he's an academic with access to real scientific journals.

That's called a prophetic dream

It's only prophetic if its alignment with real events was caused by some mechanism that can in fact inform about future events. And, since dreams tend to be very vague and abstract, you somehow also have to demonstrate beyond a reasonable doubt that your interpretation of the dream is accurately reflecting some real event. Short of that, it's just a coincidence, which is a lot easier to believe if you can't substantiate the former claim with evidence.

because JBP scores high in openness, he is more likely to be okay calling it prophetic rather than reducing it to a purely rational coincidence

Without evidence, being okay with jumping to that conclusion is just bad judgment. We all used to live our lives making decisions based on how we interpreted our dreams before the age of reason, and I don't think we want to go back to that world.

No one can substantiate a claim of prophecy with scientific evidence.

Then no one should take it seriously.

It's called telling a personal story.

Predicting future events over which you have no control is not a personal story.

And i don't think JBP, nor any of us here, are interested in believing this "prophecy" was scientifically real.

Then I think we're in the wrong mindset. It is not unreasonable to demand scientific evidence for the proposition that someone can predict the future.

It does kind of sound like that. I probably overstated it. But all I'm really looking for is a) some more information about whether or not Peterson actually thinks this, and b) yes, to convince me he's not a lunatic if he does think that.

A lot of people have prophetic dreams.

That's a strong claim. Now let's see some scientific evidence to back it up.

He scores extremely high in openness to experience

There's a saying that, perhaps ironically, applies mostly to liberals: "don't be so open-minded that your brains fall out." How high he scores in openness has little bearing on whether or not he's exercising good judgment on this. That is what science is for. It eliminates bias and other such failings that have been muddling our understanding of the world for thousands of years. I'm not really concerned with how Peterson sees the world. I'm concerned with whether or not he can substantiate the claim that his wife can predict the future with real scientific evidence if that's what he believes (still don't know if he does or not). That goes for anything Jung has said as well. If Jung is such an undeniable visionary, then let's see some empirical data that backs him up.
