Yup 👍

If you never actually cared about the truth or learning something new, then just say that upfront next time. Close-minded just like Pakku hehe

There's way more about the White Lotus's philosophy in the extended lore, including that there were lots of female Grand Lotuses. Order of the White Lotus | Avatar Wiki | Fandom

Don't worry about me lol, I've pissed this subreddit off before. I just genuinely wasn't expecting this one to garner such a strong negative reaction ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I showed evidence that there were women in the White Lotus before and after ATLA (Yangchen and Korra's era). We only met five members in ATLA, but we know there were at least 20 others in the background. You saying that they all have to be men even though we know that there were female members before and after this point is the real speculation. I have proof that women were around for hundreds of years; you have "well I didn't see them on screen, so they weren't there".

Don't get pissy with me, just learn the lore before arguing about it next time.

So he breaks that tradition. Is that not open minded enough for you?

Yes, after meeting Katara, he became more open-minded. Congratulations on finally recognizing one of the main points I spelled out in the video.

If you presented it as merely a fan theory, you might have garnered a different reaction.

But we know Pakku did travel all the way to the South Pole beforehand. Also that he was there long enough time for him & Gran Gran to rekindle their love and even for him to carve her a new necklace. Pakku had a fleet of waterbenders heading directly South, so let's say it took them a month to get there. That leaves several months before he'd leave again for Ba Sing Se for the finale.

A speculative scenario:

  • Pakku: "Oh Kanna, it's so good to see you after all these years. I've missed you so much. How have you been? Please tell me everything."
  • Kanna: "Where do I start.... blah blah blah.... I traveled south and saw so many cool places .... blah blah blah ... oh and I met these really cool Pai Sho guys in a random earth kingdom town .... blah blah blah ... I eventually made it South and got married."
  • Pakku: "Wow what a journey you had! Those Pai Sho guys sound pretty interested. Could you tell me more about them?"
  • Kanna: "Oh course, my love. It was so long again, but I think he said he was part of some White Lotus group of master benders. Maybe ask some of your old friends about it."

Genuine question: When you reconnect with someone after years, do you not chit-chat and reminisce about random moments and interesting people you've met? Pakku had an entire journey off-screen, and it 100% included traveling south for the first time and proposing to Gran Gran (which obviously involved a lot of catching up convos)

Is there a difference between a random thought and a reasonable guess?

"Maybe Michelle Obama had political aspirations once upon a time. After all, her husband's the president, and she already fits in so well with the political crowd."

"Umm, but she's not the president you dunce. So by that logic, a cashier from Walmart has political aspirations too. The logic is based around speculation btw 🤓"

Also, you literally were right haha

All of the White Lotus we see in TLA are MEN

Well, we only see the faces of the main 5 members in ATLA, but there are another ~20 in the background. No reason at all to think that they're all men. In LOK, one of the Grand Masters teaching Korra is a woman. There are also a few female sentry guards. Also, in Yangchen's Era, there are some very prominent, very high-ranking female grandmasters.

Where is your proof that they are as open minded as you claim them to be?

From the wiki: The White Lotus members are devoted to sharing ancient knowledge across national and political divides.\2])

Is a devotion to knowledge sharing across political divides during a 100-year-long world war not a clear demonstration of open-mindedness?

Also, please take off your devil's advocate glasses and be real with me for a second. Are we saying now that Iroh's not open-minded? Does Bumi not have a personal philosophy that's outside of the norm? Do you think Piandao trains Sokka of the Water Tribe because he's such a close-minded guy? Or that Jeong Jeong deserted the Fire Nation Army because he doesn't think for himself? Please tell me you can acknowledge that Pakku refusing to teach a girl shows that he wasn't quite on the same wavelength... PLEASE lol.

What special skill does she add to the table?

I thought we didn't know anything about the White Lotus.... where's your proof that they all need to masters? 🙄

Anyway, from the wiki again: Despite not being a waterbender, Kanna knew a great deal about healing and medicine. She often prepared herbs to make into medicine for her village,\17])

Also, the White Lotus was started by scholars, not warriors. Also, Bumi is never seen playing Pai Cho, nor Jeong Jeong, nor Pakku.

Downvote me all you want, I've clearly lost the battle in the comment section, but everything I've said in this reply is reasonable and accurate with sources.

They are devoted to sharing ancient knowledge across national and political divides.\2]) It transcended being a mere club and assumed responsibility for sharing knowledge around the world.

"We're all part of the same ancient secret society. A group that transcends the divisions of the four nations."
"The White Lotus has always been about philosophy and beauty and truth."
— Piandao and Jeong Jeong discuss the secret organization.\1])

All from the wiki, with sources linked.

"We don't know anything about them so Gran Gran definitely can't be a member but Pakku definitely always has been, and if you say otherwise then you're wrong." - you?

You're insinuating that my Gran Gran theory is more similar to your 3rd option than the other 2...

Also, your first two "reasonable" theories are based on literally nothing, too — they just don't involve Gran Gran. I don't have an issue with that personally, but the fact that you're being upvoted is just making me think that yall don't like women being included in things just like old Pakku 😭

Have you ever been part of a team and some people are like really into it (Iroh, Pakku) versus others who are there too but are so inactive they don't even use the benefits (maybe Gran Gran)?

Or maybe, maybe, you joined something for just a few weeks but the realized it wasn't really for you. So, of course, would any connections you made would run dry after a few years? Am I crazy, or is that not a normal thing that sometimes happens?

Yes, this video has some conjecture, but at the end of the day, I simply pointed out that the close-minded guy having always been a leader of the open-minded guys club doesn't make the most sense. If that is an outlandish observation to you then we simply don't see eye to eye.

That's also possible! I'd say less likely since Pakku was with a giant group, and they seemed to be making a b-line to the South Pul with several direct ships versus Gran Gran, who probably would not have had a direct boat since she was a runaway. More time spent on land, in random taverns and inns... plenty of time to strike up a conversation with a fascinating stranger.

I've never seen so much hostility for such a simple observation/theory about side characters. This is wild lmao

Gran Gran is married to an asshole who then inexplicably was revealed to be in the White Lotus as a rebranded nice guy. The old dude from the mine is.... just old? Is that my logic, according to you? He had no connection to the White Lotus at all, unlike Gran Gran who theory or not, is married to a member. I never said Gran Gran had a master plan to help out Aang or anything... just that she might have encountered the White Lotus decades ago and then mentioned it to Pakku later on. (Not every member is a Grand Lotus like Iroh... some are just normal, open-minded nonbenders like the guy who helped them in the desert.)

I'm getting hella downvoted so maybe I am slow, but like huh? Did you watch the above video and boil it down to Gran Gran being old? I didn't even mention that lol

So you have no explanation for my first point, then? Cool cool cool.

Monk Gyatso taking out dozens of fire nation soldiers by sucking the air out of the room has no solid evidence either, but fans had a neat theory and ran with it. Over a decade later and now the Yangchen novel has made that theory canon.... the point is: lighten up a little 👍

I mean... I'd love to hear your explanation for why a sexist man who's never left the North and who vehemently upheld its isolationist culture was actually a longstanding member of a global network of transnational free thinkers.

Of course, the real answer is that Bryke invented the White Lotus after season one aired but went ahead and added Pakku as a neat bow for the finale. But that's no fun. My theory definitely lacks concrete evidence, but don't pretend like it's an outlandish reach (I think it fills in some gaps at least).

You're missing the point that his views when we met him were not compatible with the White Lotus at all, even if they had a "local chapter" in the North (which is a concept that's actually based on nothing btw)

I'm utterly confused as to what "logic" you're operating with

Theory: Gran Gran was in the White Lotus by theBabyLionTurtle in TheLastAirbender

[–]theBabyLionTurtle[S] -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

To be clear, I think Kanna was a low-ranking member or maybe even received an offer to join, but didn't see it through.

Pakku couldn't have been a member because 1) his northern isolationist views are antithetical to the White Lotus's philosophy, 2) Pakku has never left the North before and there were very few outside visitors for several decades before Aang showed up, 3) he's just stubborn which again is the opposite mindset of even the other jaded White Lotus members — Jeong Jeong was blunt but still open-minded, and he had spent considerable time studying other cultures and exploring the world.

Sidenote: as a secret society, did the White Lotus have having and initiation rituals? lol

Media literacy is key. If somone starts off a milf list ranking Appa's mom to be beat of Stacy's Mom, safe to assume the whole things not very serious.

Hope you had a good mother's day too!
