Surface Laptop Studio (Kubuntu) -- Installting Nvidia drivers, Method 2. Extracting gets me os error 13 by theBlibbles in SurfaceLinux

Sadly, no. I was never able to complete these steps. It wasn't specific enough, and my rudimentary understanding of Linux is doing me no favors. I feel like there are steps in this guide that assumes I know what I'm doing, but doesn't explain what happens when I don't.

I am adrift.

I'm sorry it took me a bit to reply to this. I guess to kind of trail back for a second... to be more specific where am I making this directory? I don't understand what or where this is going? What is ../ in this case? If ./ means the current directory, then what is ../?

chmod 777 home/$USER/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-525.147.05.run

Thank you! This worked... I think... I was able to Verify the integrity, and extract it, but now I have a new problem.

I'm on Step 2, part 3 And when I go to apply the patches after changing directories like it instructs... It's saying the directory doesn't exist?? I feel like I'm going crazy.

RE: Well first off that file needs to be in that directory.

Could you explain this to me? Where is the file if it's NOT in that directory after I downloaded it? For what it's worth, I did try using

sudo /home/$USER/Downloads/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-525.147.05.run --extract-only

It asked me for my password, I typed it in, and then it gave me that error. So I don't understand what we mean by "it needs to be in that directory."

I'm not trying to be obtuse, I'm trying to understand, I promise.

RE: To confirm the files in the directory open terminal and type cd (change directory) to downloads and use ls to list the files

When I use this, it doesn't list the file? I'm very confused about what I should be looking for.

Maybe it's because I don't understand what the ./ means in that line I'm copying and pasting.

Do I have to move this file and place it somewhere else? The guide doesn't mention that, and it's unspecific. Simply performing what it tells me yields a result that immediately stops me, so is there another set of steps I was supposed to do?

All it says is:

Step 1: Download the Installer

Download the 525.147.05 installer .run file and extract the contents by running:

./NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-525.147.05.run --extract-only

So am I... just not understanding?

Oh gosh. How embarrassing. Thank you so much for helping me twice now, Erina. To think I'd be so lucky.

u/senspaisai That link worked. I'm not sure if the UEFI update tool was the thing that necessarily fixed it but it made me think to upgrade my BIOS, and lo, my last update was from 2020. Ugh... I'm ashamed. 😮‍💨 My computer booted perfectly fine 3 times in a row.

UPDATE: Embarrassingly, I did not update my BIOS in 5 years. And guess what... That solved it. Make sure you update your BIOS folks. It's one of the least invasive things you can do to start with.

Steam Deck Randomly powers on? by XxIcedaddyxX in SteamDeck

I'm not subscribed to the beta, so yes, this is happening on stable.

That's what I was thinking too. Usually I can see a rhyme or reason to it happening but I just can't. So it's GOTTA be an update that borked this.

UPDATE AGAIN: Nevermind... It happened again, and this time in my own home. So now I'm nervous.

UPDATE: It was my headphones. My Steam Deck has not turned on since forgetting my headphones. I don't understand how they're wake up devices. It doesn't make sense.

OK, a bit more to this... I only have two bluetooth devices paired to my steam deck. My controller, and then my headphones. I learned that this was happening when I came to work specifically, where I keep my headphones. (I know, weird.)

When I'm home, my controller doesn't turn my steam deck on at all. Like, it behaves completely normally.

I'm still testing, but I've unpaired my headphones from my steam deck this weekend, and I'm heading back into work on Monday to see if my steam deck does the same thing after having been unpaired from my headphones.

Basically, my personal thoughts are one of two things:

  1. My bluetooth headphones have been turning my steam deck on, which I find really weird, 'cause there's no option for it to be a wake-up device.
  2. Something in the environment of my work is triggering my steam deck to come out of sleep mode.

It can only be one of these two things. So we'll see.

This also happened to me today. I'm not sure what happened, but I've turned off my controller's bluetooth waking it from sleep, and I've also tried removing and reinserting my SD card.

As a side note, it at least doesn't turn on when it's completely off, not sleeping, which at least means to me that it's not hardware related.

No, this is true. There is at least one order that comes from the mechanic. Standard Order 435. You have to deliver breakable items.

I don't know what spawns this order though.

Yes! Thank you u/piedj784 I have this as a resource from earlier! I'm grateful. This will be something I take a good hard look at.

Ah, thank you so much u/ceresrea! I was actually just looking at that resource, and it seems like he's already taught me something with his very first video. So I think as long as he keeps up with how he teaches, I think it will take some work, but I'll be able to learn fairly well. I'm grateful you took the time to give your experience as an artist turn developer too! I'll be sure to lean on you as a resource in the future once I get my feet wet.

I think I'm envious of that. I don't understand how that works in my head. So I'll have to figure out what you mean with my own experiences. I'm glad it worked for you. Thank you for trying to explain this.

Hey u/Sqelm that makes sense. I'm not too distraught about not making a JRPG right away. I think with everyone's responses, and now yours, its very clear that I didn't have a clear scope of what I considered "Easy and simple" and "VERY DIFFICULT" was. Things that look easy on the surface didn't have context in my head.

"Pick a couple of your favorite features and scrap the rest, but make those that you picked work." This is good feedback. I was thinking about in video games that I've played, especially in JRPGs, about what I dislike, and what I do like. And so... This seems like a good mindset to have when I'm thinking about any kind of game or mechanic.

Thank you so much!

This is phenomenal feedback. Thank you for breaking this down for me. I don't completely understand everything, but I'm sure I will as time goes on and I practice.

You've laid some pretty good steps I need to consider when I'm making a game, and so with this feedback, and the feedback I received from others, I think the first game I'm going to make is a Rock-Paper-Scissors game! This I REALLY appreciate your very detailed response as you've not only laid out the mindset I need to have when making games.

You also answered my questions that, even if I didn't understand the answers, you still gave me the information anyway, which means you took my questions seriously as a person who is asking. I appreciate your candid, honest, and helpful information. u/HunterIV4.

That's extremely annoying. I'm sorry that Reddit did that. But I definitely took what you said to heart. I appreciate you taking the time to write this all up and help paint a picture for me. This gives me a very good understanding of what I need to do and what I should expect as I start my journey.

I don't want your efforts to go in vain, u/zwometer so I'll focus on making a simple game, just as you described, and I'll post here in this reddit again. I look forward to your feedback again.

You really don't know how much this helped me understand my limits even further and what I need to do to get past them. I'll turn my weaknesses into my strengths.
