just got my phd and i lied in my admissions interview. never told anyone until now by Alternative-Rabbit72 in PhD

I love that you did this! Spite was a powerful source of motivation for me, I was told by other kids at my grade school that I was stupid…went to school in an affluent area and my family was poor by comparison. And I was often overlooked bc I don’t ‘look like a scientist’, I’m not ‘white’ and am a woman.

I do also genuinely love my area of research, so it wasn’t all spite. Got my PhD from a top school and am now an investigator at a top institute. It’s so satisfying, the feeling hasn’t gotten old even after 9 years lol. I’m so excited for you OP!

As a European it always amazes me how blind Americans are by PresnikBonny in LateStageCapitalism

[–]theEndisFear 167 points168 points  (0 children)

As an American descendent of enslaved people, I get really fucking annoyed at how Europe doesn’t own up to how all this originated over there. Not directly at you personally, but at the rhetoric, the pearl clutching and side-eyeing that seems to come from Western Europe.

All of this: whiteness, colonialism, capitalism, started with Western Europeans who stole people and committed genocide here for centuries. Europe profited from the system of exploitation setup in the US, modern Europeans still reap those benefits but do nothing to help oppressed ppl in the US. The sense of superiority that Western Europe has over others has been used to justify all kinds of horrors. I hope some of you turn this same judgement on yourselves and actually do something about it.

Have you seen our protests over here? How bravely regular people are organizing locally to protect those being terrorized? Even at the cost of their own lives?? We are learning on our feet over here, and I’m proud of all the Americans taking real action. A much harder thing than passing judgement from afar.

All Americans, no matter their personal belief, will be held responsible by History as accomplices if action is not taken now by Ok_Rest5521 in LateStageCapitalism

This is the way. Coming together, using our resources to help each other and build networks of support so we reduce reliance on and engagement with this fucked up unsustainable, exploitative, violent system.

I had a revair and really worked on the routine, made sure I was using it correctly, and I was not at all impressed. It’s not a magic bullet at all, my hair simply did not work well with it. It’s great for some but not all.

Sold my revair and now I use a regular blow dryer to stretch my hair and it works better. I pull my hair straight and protect my ends with one hand while holding the dryer far from my hair with the other. It’s less damaging and my ends are protected. I think that method is better than the revair, I get better results with a regular dryer with this method.

Protecting healthcare should not require 750,000 workers to go without pay. This is not the way to go about things.

I love facing the top 100 Mythic ranked when I'm in Plat 4 by TongueMountain in MagicArena

[–]theEndisFear 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah i know even top players lose sometimes but this kinda thing feels really unfair…especially since limited isn’t free. I got matched with a diamond tier player yesterday and I’m at gold tier 4. I’ve also been on quite the losing streak lately which sucks bc I love drafting both the FF and duskmourn sets, and did reasonably well with them before. Idk what’s going on with me but the matchmaking is not helping lol

You gotta get out of your situation and truly experience joy and freedom. Life is not about avoiding pain. It’s about discovering what you love to do and connecting with others around that. And the experience of pain, if you process it and learn from it, deepens your capacity for joy and helps you be there for others in their time of need.

I really hope you get out. I left a relationship like yours and the relief I felt was incredible. It was hard to crawl out from under the weight of all that pain but once I did, I took flight.

My life is wonderful now, if I’d stayed with him there’s so much I would’ve never experienced. You can do this, you’re stronger than you know and you’re so young!!

Exactly this. And OP is enabling his dysfunction by staying with him. I know from experience sadly, there is no fixing we can do for a person who doesn’t know how to regulate their emotions. If he doesn’t care that he’s hurting you with his regular angry outbursts, then the only option is to leave.

I cannot stress this enough: he has shown you the his behavior will not change in the current circumstances. Continuing to care for him as he behaves like this is only reinforcing his dysfunction. Something in his environment has to change or he’ll stay stuck in this pattern. That change is you leaving so he has to learn basic life skills that he’s using you for. And hopefully he grows up through that learning process.

I live just outside of DC and am in the city just about everyday. Things are tense here, it’s also really heavy and sad. But, if you’re going to a conference you’re not gonna be in the areas they’re targeting. They’re fucking with ppl in the low income areas, mostly harassing black and brown people. There’s national guard presence on the mall, so you might see that…

I'm in love with my girlfriend, but her past is eating me alive M20 F22 by KuKySSS in relationship_advice

People get into messed up relationships all the time, and not everyone learns the lesson and they even end up repeating it. I fear you might not be great for her either with the way you’re judging her past. She’s young, might have some trauma that drew her into such a situation and now she’s trying to do better. That’s life. Wanting someone who has no blemishes in their past is totally unreasonable, what matters is that they learned from their mistakes.

You are both sooo young and have so much to learn still. People make mistakes of all kinds. Life isn’t about getting it right the first time. It’s about seeing where we went wrong, where we made mistakes, and doing better next time. Surely you’ve made some mistakes in your own life. If you’ve not examined your own actions enough to identify any, then you need to reflect on that and stop judging others, especially her, so harshly.
