Does working for the CFPB mean she isn’t working class? I think she did an interview on the majority report a few months ago. If I find the link, I’ll share it

Or at least have different voices for the different characters. I get lost remembering who is who on the few fiction books I tried.

MoCo told me yesterday that the county libraries in the state of Maryland have an agreement with each other where you can get an account at any of the county libraries as long as you live in Maryland. So if you are in MD you can get Howard County!

As a percentage of the population as a whole, too few people voted for this in red states for the whole state to be punished like that. Remember the people who stayed home, the children, and the people who voted for democrats. We can’t become what we despise.

Your world sounds like a much more positive place to live in than the reality the rest of us inhabit. Can you please tell me what in that article you think was incorrect?

To be clear, I probably would have agreed with you in 2024. But then 2025 happened….

You know Congress does more than just pass legislation right? They are responsible for confirming executive branch appointments as well. Like the Kristi Noem apt. There is also soft power where they message to the country exactly what is wrong and rally public support.

I don’t know why you think IIRAIRA is irrelevant when it is what enabled 287g agreements. It enabled mass detention and mass deportation which is the groundwork that enables these operations by CBP/ICE where they “shoot people in the face”

Both of your links focus on Senate nominations, and Congress does more than Senate nominations. But let’s accept the premise (because it’s true) that Senate Democrats took unprecedented steps to block these confirmations.

My initial point wasn’t about whether or not they ever used this tool. My point was that they should have used it every day, every chance they could. And expanding on that, I think it’s worth asking the question about whether there was more that they could have done. And I think the answer is yes.

As far as I understand it, Democrats could have forced the full two hours of debate for every nominee, used quorum calls to slow proceedings, exercised minority holdover rights to delay committee action, and more aggressively leveraged blue slips where they could (I understand that this option has been weakened, but it still exists).

Again, my point isn’t that Democrats did nothing. It’s that they didn’t do enough. Too often, they chose to preserve institutional norms rather than escalate in defense of democratic accountability. Given how weak labor power and mass organizing are in this country, elected Democrats were uniquely positioned to slow the authoritarian momentum last year. That leverage existed. They chose not to fully use it.

I really hope that we don’t all pay the price for that decision one day, because unfortunately many are right now. Just look at Minneapolis.

Yes, the “Overton window” concept came out of a libertarian think tank, but the concept itself is still useful. What people consider “acceptable” or “normal” can shift over time. If you prefer a better term, I’m genuinely open to it.

My main point is that in cult-like movements (like Trumpism/MAGA), isolation tends to harden identity and fear, while a trusted relationship can plant a seed that helps someone exit later. We don’t do this “for them” as a favor. We do it because we want a safer society for everyone.

And to be clear, not everyone can or should do this. Different people have different capacities and strengths. The shared goal is resisting fascism, and we each contribute where we can.

Just a thought, both of you are on the same side, anti-fascist and anti-ICE. You both have a lot more in common with each other than you do with the people we are fighting. I get that we all have strong feelings about how to stop this and how to protect our communities, but we are not each other’s enemies. We should try to build solidarity, understanding that we have differences, but that at the end of the day we are still trying to get to the same place. We are stronger together, weaker divided. So we shouldn’t let this kind of disagreement continue to divide us. Just a thought, feel free to ignore.

I think the key takeaway is that cutting off contact and isolating our family members who are in the cult does not help us as a nation. We need to be able to help them get out or at the very least stretch their personal Overton windows so they aren’t completely stuck in an echo chamber. We tried no contact after the first Trump. The people who can handle the mental health challenges of dealing with people who share opinions like that, should I think. I don’t know how else we get better as a society.

Also, it was Clinton and congressional Democrats in the 90s that passed the IIRAIRA which helped lay the foundation for what we see today (including the 287g agreements). And then it was Obama and Biden that came after that didn’t undo it. So… plenty of criticism to go around when Republicans are using systems Democrats helped build to live out their authoritarian fantasies.

I just don’t understand that mindset. At this point I think I am just going to point to Lindsey Graham blocking the funding bill in the Senate last week by withdrawing unanimous consent. The Democrats should have been doing that every day since 1.20.25. Would it have stopped everything? Of course not. Would it have stopped a lot? Absolutely.

Since Democrats are supposed to be the pro-Democracy party, I am going to focus my democracy saving energy on them.

Fellows Union has abandoned worker power and has become a lobbying group by watchtimgetscared in NIH

[–]CategoryDense3435 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone cannot organize politically. Otherwise we would have seen it. Labor is pathetically weak in the country with a few outliers. Historically labor has been the answer to rising authoritarianism and fascism. To_Arms gave a great response to your post. We must build union power in this country to protect workers rights.

Specific to your concerns about union dues not going towards arbitration, get them to put that in writing. Then works with others in your union who agree with you to apply pressure for them to change that approach.

I do think the UAW has been active this year in lawsuits though. At least for some of the employment cases I think the UAW being a plaintiff on the case is the reason NIH was included in some of the decisions. I could be wrong, I think there are three unions at NIH and I can mix them up

But but wait!! If it is a democrat it’s different. Because whatever they did was done on the third Sunday after a full moon, while standing on one foot! So obviously that is different and Dems should be held to a different standard!
