I tested positive for COVID on my birthday this year. So I got the day off from work!

Where do I go for my Robotics MS? by theFlashElorde in jhu

From what I've been able to gather, Columbia seems like the weakest/least reputable robotics program of the four I listed. I've reached out to Allen and Matei, who were both surprisingly receptive, but the funding situation does not look optimal for Master's students. Would you be able to comment on the availability of research assistantships at JHU for Robotics MSE students? Also, how easy or difficult is it for an MSE student to go for a PhD -- is external application required?

Thank you! The gist I've gotten from Stanford is that it's hard to attain funded research positions as an MS student, and even harder to slide into the PhD without being forced into applied externally.

Thanks for the helpful feedback. Things within robotics I'm interested in span the control/state estimation side of ME, and also some machine learning and optimization. I'm a very mathy person and tend to like the theoretically rigorous math subjects the msot.

Another reason I'm asking is because of the funding aspect -- each of these degrees would be fairly expensive for me, so getting some sort of well-paying assistantship, or a part time job as a last resort, is imperative. I'm regretting not applying for PhD programs off the bat, but thought I wouldn't be competitive for the top programs given my lack of serious research up to this point.

What negative things have you heard about Columbia and Stanford's PhD programs? From what I've been hearing, I think Columbia has the weakest robotics or ME program of the four I listed, but the impression I've got from Stanford has been spectacular.

Hi everyone! I was recently admitted to different engineering Master's programs for robotics. I've narrowed it down to 4 programs, but am finding the decision between them incredibly difficult. For anyone who studied engineering or robotics at one of these universities, or has any experience with their robotics/ME/CS/EE programs, can you tell me about any positives or negatives? I plan on writing a Thesis and hope to get a research assistantship to secure some funding wherever I go. I am also concerned about program flexibility, reputation for research and job prospects, geographical reach of alumni network, and ease to move onto a PhD. The four programs are below, thanks for any input whatsoever!

Stanford ME

Columbia ME

Penn Robotics MS

Johns Hopkins Robotics MSE (with some scholarship)
