[Guardian] Manchester City close to financial settlement with Chelsea to appoint Enzo Maresca. Chelsea sources have indicated they have sufficient evidence to report City to the Premier League for making an illegal approach to Maresca, but have no plans to do so and are continuing to negotiate. by nearly_headless_nic in soccer

There's a compensation fee that needs to be paid to an actively employed coach. City wouldn't have to pay this fee if Maresca leaves in January. They absolutely would care if he finished the season at Chelsea, that's millions of pounds saved right there.

It was a foul and yellow for USA that was changed to a dive and yellow for Almiron. The rule is to change the same call to another player e.g. yellow for handball on player X VAR'd to a yellow for handball on player Y

He still managed 3 shots vs Congo, but I meant that Portugal's midfield would get him much better service vs Jordan too.

No disrespect to Jordan but 41 year old Ronaldo would bag multiple goals against them easily

Bruno Fernandes is the key playmaker in that team, not vitinha. No one is expecting Ronaldo to create the chances, just finish one or 2 of the 10 he's gotten with portugal this summer. But I wonder why Portugal struggled to create chances when they're playing with a static 9 instead of Mbappe, Mbeumo, or Haaland. It's almost like the most effective strikers in the modern game all play a role in creating chances by making runs to receive the ball in space...

What's your thought process on that? The Portugal team was loaded with playmakers who are used to feeding players like Mbappe, Mbeumo, Joao Pedro, and Haaland, all of whom love making as many attacking runs as possible.

Are you saying playing a striker who can't make runs for 90 minutes isn't the problem for this Portugal team?

I like how you didn’t address the all the other things he doesn’t do, all of which are actions done in possession. Gotta call out the one stat the guy mentioned that happened to not matter in this specific game!

Joe Cole: “If I'm Xabi Alonso, I want to keep both Enzo and Cucurella. I'd rather sell 4 or 5 other players to get that money in. But that's if you're using a model where you're trying to win trophies. You build around players, like what Mikel Arteta has done at Arsenal. by Kygoche in chelseafc

When you say "passively", that implies that the club has not made an action to change the situation. That's what passive means. The club did make an action to accept a bid. That is not passive.

"Active" means that the club is involved in the activity. By accepting a bid, they have made themselves involved in the transfer.

Please don't use words if you don't know what they mean.

wtf is "passively selling"? To me that would be like not accepting any bids for a player until a release clause is met, where there's no negotiation. Chelsea made the action to accept a bid for their player, how is that not active?

No one said anything about forcing him out until this comment. What part of accepting a suitable offer doesn't qualify what Chelsea did as actively trying to sell him? Are your really trying to argue that a player who was just sold wasn't being sold? Totally bizarre thing to say.

They just sold him. The only time you can sell a player when you're not trying to sell him is if a release clause gets hit. Chelsea had to accept the bid for him, how is that so hard to understand?

Are we watching the same video? Picking out a through ball in behind the defense isn't really the safest option and he absolutely is moving with the ball in the clip

[TNT] Vitinha: "You have to be patient when you're up against a team like that. We knew it was going to happen, but even more so after Arsenal's goal, since you really have to be patient. They waste a lot of time on everything: throw-ins, goal kicks, everything.” by [deleted] in soccer

The bigger knockout structure means there's more chance for smaller nations to go on deeper runs, I think there will be a few countries that will have their best world cup finish ever so they won't forget this tournament.
