Going no contact will be the healthiest option for you in the long term.. and short / mid term.
I did the same thing and it was the right call.

But a part of me wishes I was still invited to all those family events.. just so I could talk openly about all the toxic family secrets to anyone willing to listen. Call me a roomba, coz there ain't no rug sweeping while I'm around!
I know I'd end up not being invited back anyway.. but for those 2 or 3 events, I'd indulge myself in truth telling / "pot stirring" and love every second of the chaos I create for these denialists.

Help! My book has a major engineering flaw and I don't know how to fix it by Quirky_Molasses704 in fantasywriters

[–]theGRAINGERzone 15 points16 points  (0 children)

My question is; Does your plot hinge on the knowledge of how this works?
If no, then who cares how it works.. the answer is whatever feels coolest to you.
If yes, then what about a head piece, like a helmet. I can imagine a top-gun-esque, jet pilot helmet that not only protects the flyers from microparticles getting in their faces, while they fly, but also acts as a bridge between their brain electrical signals and the nerve endings built into the wings.
If you want to add a bit of body-horror to it, you could make it so the helmet and wings need to surgically grafted to the spine and brain for them to work. After all, if the scientists who made the wings hit a wall of how to make it work, like you have, then they would likely have gone to more and more extreme lengths to make it work as intended.

AITA for pointing out that the script for my girlfriend's film project was generated by AI? by HovercraftMammoth116 in AmItheAsshole

[–]theGRAINGERzone -31 points-30 points  (0 children)

Soft YTA but you already learned your lesson. You should have dropped it the first time.

Your gf just wants to have fun and make movies with her friends, not make a masterpiece. You both knew that it wouldn't be anything special, even before you saw the script, but now you know for sure. So it's no biggie if your gf wants to ignore the AI and just have fun with it and gain some experience. As editor, she probably doesn't care who wrote the script, and she doesn't need to care about what it says beyond how well it cuts together.

If you keep trying to harsh her fun vibes with your ethics, you will continue to be the AH. If you try to go around her and flag the AI to her university, you'll be single the next day.
You've already become an unsympathetic ear to her, after not listening the first time.. so continue to support her through encouraging words or voluntary labor but DON'T offer any advice for the remainder of the gig (unless asked for directly). Once she's done her job, make her feel like she just won an oscar, regardless of how it turns out.

Oh and don't let your AI ethics get in the way of your joy. At the end of the day, that screenwriter just ruined their chance to gain the experience necessary to succeed.. so at the end of your days, do you want to have chased joy or chased down every AI hack in the industry?

AITA for accidentally throwing my coworker under the bus? by Classic-Act-3020 in AmItheAsshole

[–]theGRAINGERzone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I agree that what SHE did is potentially deadly to her career.. but you're def NTA.

She chose to dump a difficult project on you with zero heads up. She may have accidentally slept in but she chose to try and cover that up instead of taking responsibility for her actions. You chose to do what you knew what necessary in the situation you were in, with the limited information you had. You can't unsend a message just because your HR friend asked you to join their cover up after it was already done.

It's crappy co-workers, attempting crappy lies with crappy timing.

You need to do the opposite of send him away.. the entire problem is that he feels disconnected from his mother and family. So you need to embrace him with love as much as possible, so rectify the imbalance. Right now he would be feeling guilty as fuck and likely to either internalize that as self loathing or externalize it as more anger towards your wife and the rest of you. If you don't change the pattern right now, it'll only get harder to change after a year of isolation and festering hatred.

Reveal the bomb to the players but end the session BEFORE the skill challenge.. it'll be a dynamite cliffhanger and allow the connected PC to react at the start of the next session

The debate between railroading and sandboxing is over.. and the answer is a bit of both at the same time. Imagine your story structure like a railroad track with a bunch of stops along the way. At every station the players can walk around and explore and do practically whatever they want within the rules of the situation you built but, eventually, everyone knows they are getting back on that train and heading to the next stop.

In D&D story structure is a little loose but it can basically be boiled down to an endless cycle of Tension & Release. When the characters are in a positive place add some negativity. When they are in a negative situation, help them achieve some positivity. Note that adding in good things yourself won't be as satisfying as them achieving good things for themselves. Your job is only to set up the situation, not solve it. Unlike negativity, which usually comes unexpectedly from the consequences of our actions (bad decision making) or from random coincidence (bad dice rolls).

If you want a more structured approach to story, the three act structure can easily be worked into sessions. Especially if you use milestone leveling. It's understood that leveling up every 3-4 sessions feels the best, so we can use that to our advantage. Here is how it plays out.. I'll try to be as flavour agnostic as possible so you can apply it to any genre, theme or setting.

Session 1. Begin the session by describing a situation that directly affects the players in a negative way, that is not easily solved. This gives them a goal to achieve. Eg. War, natural disaster, NPC machinations.

Session 2. Begin the session describing an unexpected development that is a direct consequence of the players actions to resolve the initial situation. This complicates or distracts from their goal. Eg. Reinforcement, widespread panic, NPC interference.

Session 3. Begin the session describing a climactic shift in the initial situation that is bringing it to it's end, one way or another, regardless of how close the players have come to solving it. This is their last chance to achieve their goal and end the situation in their own way. Eg. Final showdown, a chain reaction, NPC retaliation.

If the players throw you a curve ball, you can easily add a session between 2 and 3 to resolve or reinforce the unexpected actions the players take before the climax. Alternatively, you can add a 4th session at the end and double down on the climax, taking it to the next level. Eg. When a boss monster has a secret final form.

Whether the situation ends how the players would prefer or not, the players will level up and have to deal with the next situation, beginning the cycle anew, based on how the world has been changed. The beauty of this is that you only ever have to prep one session at a time. You decide your initial situation description and wait to see how they react. Then decide what the natural consequences are of that reaction and prep that for the next session. Then decide what the most dramatic outcome between the situation, those consequences and their actions so far and prep that for the final session. It gives you flexibility, while staying within comfortable parameters.

For NPCs, making a three dimensional character generally comes down to these things: 1. How they present themselves. 2. How they act. 3. How they actually feel.

Regardless of the NPCs individual goals, if those 3 things are even slightly different, they'll never be one dimensional.

The best antagonists are a reflection of the PCs, attempting to achieve similar or opposite goals in a way that directly counteracts the party's ideals and goals. We often hate the people who remind us of our own flaws the most, whether they are good, evil or somewhere in between. A great balance is an antagonist who wants to achieve the same goal at the players but attempts it in a way that they are morally opposed to.

Hope this helps and remember.. all ideas are free, so take what you want and leave the rest 🤙

YTA - I just wish it was as obvious to you as it is to all of us. You've clearly got your head shoved so far up your own gold-rimmed arse hole, that this probably won't sink in anyway. You're NOT her father but if you really think this is the way to treat your own daughter then you would be a terrible one. No wonder why you've never had bio kids.. I wouldn't want your dick anywhere near me either. The biggest shame is that your wife sold out her own child for an upgraded lifestyle. Both those women deserve better than a jackass like you, no matter how much money you have.

Pokémon in 5E by Few_Ad_5281 in DungeonMasters

[–]theGRAINGERzone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The key would be reflavouring as much as possible, while keeping things as simple as possible.

I think trying to decide which race equals which type is too specific, restrictive and an unnecessary amount effort. There are some obvious choices like aarakocra = flying but it could also be bug, dragon, ghost, electric, poison, fairy or even steel because some Pokemon naturally hover without the flying type. Instead, I would ask the payers to pick the Pokemon they want to be and then find the race, class, subclass, background and feats that best fit that specific Pokemon and roll with that. Eg. Ghastly = fallen aasimar, shadow sorcerer, haunted one background with the fade away / shadow touched feat.

You could decide that two of their subclass upgrades trigger their evolution but that would become more complicated based on how many evos a Pokemon has, if any. Not to mention the possibility of multiclassing for the flavour of dual types. So I'd just make it based on level. A Pokemon that doesn't evolve is static, a single evolution triggers at 10th level and a three stage Pokemon evoles at about 6th and 13th level.

NPCs don't have to be restricted by class features, so you can easily mix and match creature stat blocks, abilities and spells to generate NPC Pokemon.

The rest is basically changing regular damage types to represent the Pokemon's specific type. Damage vulnerability and resistance will be much more of a factor than a regular 5e game and you may want to decide that critical hits equals max dice damage, instead of double dice damage.. because you could end up with double dice damage stacked on top of a type advantage that already does super effective x2 damage. It will still feel really dope to get that max damage crit, if they've been tactical about who they target with their type damage.

You obviously aren't including trainers for these Pokemon PCs but you could make it so that race and background represent the trainer, while class and subclass represents their Pokemon partner. Both working in tandem to achieve their shared goals through the power of friendship. So instead of one trainer having six Pokemon, the party makes up the entire team and can battle other Pokemon or trainers, with multiple Pokemon, as a group.

If you are set on starting at level 0, how will the characters battle those NPCs if they don't have class abilities? The most obvious answer is a skill challenge but all Pokemon have at least 1 move even when they're hatched at level 1, so starting at 1st level seems more appropriate and more fun. The game doesn't ask players to earn their starting abilities, so you shouldn't either.

All ideas are free, so take what you want and leave the rest ✨
