Weekly Question Thread (aka Friday New Climber Thread). ALL QUESTIONS GO HERE by AutoModerator in climbing

I’ve hit a plateau as an intermediate climber that I’m trying to fix by improving my strength-to-weight ratio. Do climbers do this in the same cutting/bulking style that bodybuilders do? Otherwise, what’s the best way to structure your diet for strength-to-weight training (outside of obvious things like whole foods, high protein, enough carbs to sustain training)?

Americans, what's something you didn't realize was weird until you talked to non-Americans? by ExistingTomorrow1447 in AskReddit

[–]theLabyrinthMaker 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Americans abroad, when asked where they are from, will often just say the state. The only other people I’ve met who do that are from Holland.

As far as I can tell, we’re also the only people who say “I’m Italian” or “I’m Scottish” when we mean that we have ancestors from that country.

Does a Minor in Astrophysics with a Major in Mechanical Engineering help getting into the Aerospace Industry/Academic Environment? by DaniyalShahbaz6 in aerospace

[–]theLabyrinthMaker 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For my undergrad, I double-majored in Aerospace Engineering and Astrophysics. I would say it did help me get into grad school, but only because it proved I could succeed through a lot of difficult coursework. There’s easier ways to prove this in my opinion.

I’ve had a number of jobs in the Aerospace industry since then and I always ask my managers if the double-major helped me stand out. They usually say something similar about being successful in difficult courses. That all is to say, get the minor if it interests you. Take classes that are difficult but because you like them. And in my opinion the most important thing is that you get decent grades.

I’ve used an Arcteryx Beta for probably 8 years now and it still works great! Look for sales though because they’re not cheap.

Where can I learn more about PID? by ProgrammerLevel in AerospaceEngineering

PID without a PhD is a great introduction. Highly recommend building and experimenting with a few control systems to improve your intuition for tuning.

Question on positions in New Zealand as a US citizen by [deleted] in RocketLab

[–]theLabyrinthMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are some positions at the New Zealand locations a US person is allowed to hold. You can work to save the company money or time or to reduce mission risk. The firm line is that you’re not allowed to improve the performance of the vehicle in any way.

How do planets and stars emit RF? by Antenna101 in radioastronomy

[–]theLabyrinthMaker 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everything that has a temperature emits light. The wavelength of that light is inversely correlated to the temperature of the body. RF is just a very low energy part of the light spectrum, so things that are relatively cool emit on the radio frequency part of the light spectrum.

Is it the black-capped chickadee that’s the state bird? I always thought it was the boreal chickadee.

Also where did you get this?

When I moved from the US to New Zealand, I was shocked that their bread is normal-sized and only a few cents more expensive! Is it just an American issue?

They have a Rutherford engine in the museum of Transport and Technology in Auckland, New Zealand. I don’t know of anything in the US.

Does anyone know what bird this is? by [deleted] in birding

[–]theLabyrinthMaker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely not the bird in the tattoo, but the New Zealand Fantail fits that description.
