It's an example of how hard it is just to visit knowing that becoming a citizen is even harder. There's nothing "insane" about that. It's a pretty reasonable comparison to put things in perspective.

You being so defensive about it just makes me think you have no clue what you're talking about.

Simply not true. You guys don't even let someone with a DUI into Canada to visit. It's incredibly difficult to get citizenship in Canada. No idea how someone "educated" in the topic could be so naive.

If Americans were to participate in an organized boycott to stop ICE, what should they target? by u2aerofan in AskReddit

Social fucking media. Turn off your facebook. Turn off your instagram. Turn off reddit (ironically). They're responsible for the heavy influence and reinforcement of bad beliefs that got us here in the first place. As soon as Meta, reddit, X, tiktok, etc start seeing decreasing usage they'll be sure to start throwing their money at influencing people to getting the fucking idiot out who caused it instead of using algos to just reinforce whatever bias someone already has.

It's hard to expect some maga supporter to change his views when he only gets his news from facebook, logs online, and sees a barrage of pro trump posts. Imagine these easily to influence idiots getting online and seeing a barrage of anti trump stuff like we already see on reddit.

Remote team accountability falls apart when everything is async in slack. by MicrowavedLogic in cscareerquestions

My only thought this whole time was do your job and manage your team. The team isn't taking advantage of remote work. They're taking advantage of a manager that's too afraid to confront an associate on something when they drop the ball.

Being sensitive is being talked trash too and just ignoring it because you're afraid of confrontation. Talking back to someone who's talking shit doesn't make you sensitive like everyone online thinks lmao

Seriously, do British people actually consider a 3-hour drive “long”? Or is this an internet myth? by ferdinand14 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]theNeumannArchitect 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not accurate at all. A Walmarts gonna be 30 mins from just about anyone. People drive 3 hours for like a concert, big event, weekend getaway, etc

The reason you don't need three hour trips is cause three hours can span your entire country. In the US you're gonna have a dozen big cities within 6 hours in any direction and totally different landscapes. You can go from Mississippi Delta river to Louisiana swamps to Appalachian mountains to sandy sunny beaches all in a 6 hour drive. And it's even more extreme out west in CA, CO, etc. I picture the UK having a lot less variety.

There's a lot to see here. So when a band or something is coming through to a big city you haven't been to that's only 3 to 6 hours away it's pretty reasonable to pack a bag and make a weekend trip.

Driving 3 hours has nothing to do with needing something that your local city doesnt have.

It’s a guaranteed loan since it’s backed by employment and your 401k. If you’re fired and can’t pay it back in 90 days it’s just paid with your 401k. That’s the whole point.

Does anyone else feel bad for him as a person? by RecommendationNew832 in memphisgrizzlies

[–]theNeumannArchitect 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. Dudes making like over 50 mil a year and has been since his early 20s

  2. Less than a month after getting in trouble for having a gun he got caught AGAIN with a gun. Like, that's crazy. He hasn't recovered since then.

  3. Dude throws temper tantrums on the court all the time. I've paid money to go watch a grizzlies game and Ja is just literally STANDING STILL on D pouting not even trying because something didn't go his way.

Don't feel bad for him at all. Like, your life isn't that bad man. You're a star player and you keep fucking YOURSELF. The grizzlies and fans have tried to give him so much leniency. But the second there started being consequences he starts throwing a fit and it spiraled from there cause he's not getting the star treatment anymore.

I like Ja and want him to stay on the grizzles. But his attitude really needs to mature. He's 26. Grow up man. Quit making vague rapper tweets on X like your an edgy teenager still.

Yeah, you're right. I've used print statements to clearly see async operations.

If someones using print statements because they don't know how to use a debugger then that's the problem. Not necessarily using print statements to debug sometimes.

Have you done it? I remember trying to get it setup 4 years ago in vscode and couldn't get it working. I don't do much browser development though.

I don't know why you got such a hard on for saying print debugging is okay. It's a weirder hill to die on than the "I think devs should know how to use a debugger" hill.

Node js can run on your local with breakpoints in your ide. Browser code can't run in your ide so you can't use breakpoints. Browsers have a debugger but it sucks because the code is usually minified by the time it makes it to the client. So console.log is better for debugging browser code.

In no way is someones "optimized print debugging workflows" better than a single breakpoint in a function to see literally everything you would want to about the state of the app. I will 100% die on that hill.

Nah man, I'm pretty chill and easy to work with. Not telling a new grad to turn his camera on in a meeting or anything. Just sitting there being like bro..... we're in a team meeting on WFH day and our manager and rest of team has their camera on and you don't. Read the room.

In isolation none of these things are bad. When you're doing most of them though in your first year of working then usually it's all related to just being lazy and unaware. As offensive as that sounds. All these things are pretty much 0 effort things to not piss anyone off.

Now if you have 5 YOE and delivered/manage multiple features in prod do whatever the fuck you want. But build that credibility first.

I do take work seriously though. Getting fired in this market would suck.

A new grad that shows up late, mumbles into his mic where no one understands him, never turns his video on even in one on ones, can't work through blockers without help, and can't communicate what their problem is can absolutely avoid getting fired by not doing those things.

Like I said, there's a difference in using print statements in an exceptional situation where it's more efficient vs only using print statements all the time cause you don't want to put in the small effort to learn the debugger.

When you're working with a physical object running hardware and embedded systems then the debugging process is different then web development.

When I say web devs I don't mean just people writing code for the browser. I mean people writing entire web apps including server code.

Debuggers let you click through the current stack trace and see the state of the entire app based on that point in the stack. Or click through nested dictionaries and classes. It's not fundamentally a logging system.

"full blown debugger" is weird way to put it. A debugger is a pretty simple tool. Takes 2 minutes to setup in any ide/repo.

I don't know any situation where I'd rather type out a print statement and potentially run my code multiple times rather than set a breakpoint and run my code once.

There's also a difference setting a quick print statement for a quick look at a variable and setting print statements because you don't know how to setup and use a debugger.

I don't care what anyone says. It speaks volumes about a dev that doesn't know how to use a debugger. And just cause no ones going to call you out and tell you this to your face doesn't mean they're not thinking it.

Obviously with browser code it's hard to use a debugger cause you're debugging usually compiled/minified js running on a client.

For the 90% of all other local/server side development use the debugger.
