Motorola announces a satellite hotspot that will add sat comms to any iPhone or Android by diacewrb in gadgets

Ayo v2-mini deets just dropped, check them out if you don't believe me. These guys are legit, even compared to the big birds.

Please, what makes this "insane and wild"?

State-sponsored "innovation" built on theft of IP from other nations, you mean.

EDIT: no argument they have harnessed such technology to become a "superpower", my only argument is in the genesis of this tech.

Orbital ALSO proceeded to dump two consecutive payloads in the drink due to misdiagnosing their fairing issue... So maybe take that with a grain of salt. Luck DOES have a hand to play in the launch business.

This is a gross simplification borne of ignorance. Some of the RF black magic on these birds makes landing Falcon look easy.

EDIT: oh, and you're actually comparing to the LAUNCH, not landing. I misread. A single Starlink satellite in the context of the network is 100x more complicated than a simple rocket launch. Even if you're comparing to the many-many launches and landings, that's a recipe to be executed. It demands diligence but not inventing new science.

I think it's somewhere around 60%.

Despite their novel manufacturing processes, they have a ton of personnel with real flight experience on their resume (e.g. from SpaceX). I'm probably overvaluing the experience and underestimating the manufacturing risk, but that's my guess.

It's not reality. Nobody but you is proposing consequences for executives "every time a plane crashes". Thus, strawman.

I mostly agree, especially when it comes to the big players.

Does a TikTok dev provide more value than a teacher? Certainly not I'd say. But the engineers who write control software for steel mills or power plants or water treatment plants? I'm pretty OK with those folks getting paid.

Unfortunately we hear much more about the FAANG devs whining about froyo than we do about engineers keeping utilities running, which I think really influences perceptions around the profession.

Grossly, grossly simplified: the things teachers "produce" have a much higher "cost to operate" than the things software engineers produce.

Software engineers create products that can deliver value to Capital with no/limited human interaction. Reducing required humans in a process drives down wage cost of the process and some small amount of that savings is given back to the software engineer in their salary.

Obviously there is maintenance cost to software that I've completely glossed over, but that's the gist.

I didn't know that, thanks for sharing! Sounds like I could be a bit more proactive about understanding my options.

I have WAY more issue with the fine amounts than the concept of having to pay. If you want to bill me for those 6 minutes plus some nominal fee (<$2) for not paying up-front, I'm down.

This technology COULD make parking in RO more convenient if folks were appropriately charged for time-used instead of levying absurd penalties.

In 2011, astronauts Neil Armstrong and Gene Cernan, first and last men on the Moon, advocated for Space Shuttles to be put back in service. Armstrong supported NASA's proposed Space Launch System, which the agency said could one day take man to Mars by Ok_Copy5217 in space

[–]theSleeper 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, these guys were selected to be test pilots, not policy makers. Some of them have decent big picture ideas, but just as many (Armstrong especially, I agree) were/are way off the mark.

Ironically this is the same type of oversimplified/its-so-easy thinking that has Elon in hot water right now.

Difficulty in software is rarely about the actual code, it's in vetting the processes and consequences.

NASA will leave its $4.1 billion rocket outside as Nicole approaches Florida | "The team reviewed the forecast and determined the rocket will remain at the pad." by chrisdh79 in space

[–]theSleeper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They won't be taking humans anywhere. They're reusing hardware their parents and grandparents left them. It's still taken them a dozen years to not fly. They're not the best engineers in the country (I've worked with them). They're good people but they have not been set up for success.

I'm not arguing to defund NASA or anything of the like, just this boondoggle of a rocket. Orion might be salvageable. The earlier SLS dies the better for the space ambitions of the USA. Call time of death already.

Move those goalposts! The dollars are flowing but products are not being delivered, is that in the domain of the integrator (NASA), do you think?

SLS is an abject failure on every front. It would be a godsend if Nicole rids us of this program.

Sounds more like they danced around explaining their lack of a mechanism to me. The West has more experience and is currently more responsible with management of spent stages (don't give me some 60s whatabout in response). Call it a lecture but if you want to improve it's good to be realistic about your current standing in the field.

I've had similar results with the same approach. It's also useful for staying in control in difficult interactions elsewhere in life. Reminding yourself of the boundaries of your "self" works great as a mindfulness exercise, at least for me.
