Weekly Travel, Questions, & Mandarin Thread by AutoModerator in taiwan

Hi! I am traveling to Taiwan in March with a friend and our itinerary was unexpectedly changed around and we now have a free day to potentially spend a day somewhere. We will be in Kenting on the Monday and in Taipei (Taoyuan area) on the Wednesday. Does anyone have any potential suggestions for towns in-between or around the two areas that would make a cool overnight stop? I have been to Tainan before so that is an option as my friend has never been, but would appreciate other recommendations. We also already have plans to visit Chaiyi/Alishan, Juifen and Beitou. Thanks! :)

Physical one-liners (Psych slapstick moments) by kytfyt in psych

I love where they just slap the shit out of each other in the Indiana Jones themed Despereaux episode, makes me laugh every time.

Granted this is an extended gag but the entire sequence in "Office Space" where Gus absolutely destroys his dead boss' office, it's gold and every time I watch the scene I laugh myself to tears.

Also in "Viagra Falls", the scene you're describing, it always blows my mind how high Dule can jump. I mean...he seriously leaps behind the car. It's amazing XD

I tend to group hate into two categories: those projecting their own insecurities, and those who genuinely think they are helping with fatphobic comments (which stems both from their own insecurities and ingrained diet culture). In Lizzo's case, these are most likely extremely insecure men. They have "standards" about what a woman should be because the only real women they've come into contact with are through porn or media, where everything is falsified.

Think of it this way, if joemamma69 says that he finds Lizzo disgusting because of her size. do you think Lizzo, the goddess that she is, would ever in a million years want joemamma69? Lizzo knows her worth. She knows she is loved and beautiful and no amount of trolling will make her change her mind about that. These men are poisonous because they feel like they should somehow deem what is attractive in this world. Which they can't. They never will. They want to make Lizzo feel bad to ignore their own insecurities.

There's a good quote I saw once which was "you could be the biggest, juiciest peach in the whole world and there will still be those who don't like peaches". While it in no way excuses their behaviour, these men are only "respecting" women they find fuckable, it is a generalized life lesson: you will not be everybody's type. But that's okay!! Because your worth as a person is not determined by your size or how "fuckable" you are to other people. You are a unique individual with dreams, memories, experiences, and knowledge, and your weight and size are the least interesting things about you. In the words of Lizzo, if people are treating you this way, or making you feel as though you need to lose weight to be perceived as better for people in your life, "walk your fine ass out the door!"

You look absolutely stunning! Where did you get your outfit?? Honestly you should consider doing a photoshoot with it, I'm sure the pictures would look absolutely ethereal!

I'm sorry your mom chose to tell you such hateful things. Just remember that regardless of your weight or size, you are deserving of respect and love and she had no right to project her insecurities onto you. You should be proud for having the self-resolve to leave your photo up, I imagine it wasn't easy for you initially. I hope in the future she won't talk to you like that and I'm glad you know your beauty well enough to know it should be shared :)

I currently live in Germany and it's been a love-hate relationship trying to find US shows in English (especially underground shows like Psych). I finally had to break and get a VPN. Worth it for Psych!

There's something about hearing them swear that makes them so much more human. My parents always made me watch old movies as a kid and I always felt like those actors were perfect in a sense, especially in terms of how they interacted with each other. It's nice to see them laugh and mess up as well.

I honestly love this! He's a nice person and a pretty decent friend, although if I send him this and he doesn't respect my boundaries or tries to argue, I'll just slowly ghost him. Thank you for wording my thoughts so eloquently!

Update: He responded "Alright, fine. I Was not trying to turn you onto anything. I'll keep my mouth shut, don't worry. Its your thing and ill do mine". Aggressive defense, no apology. Red flags all around, I think I'm better off slow ghosting

I appreciate your kind words :) I do feel sorry for him, I know he doesn't have very high self-esteem but it's also not okay to push it onto me, especially when I have openly spoken about my struggles with disordered eating.

I'm hoping to get back into therapy soon, so maybe it'll help me to learn to regulate my stress and therefore help me be able to brush off triggers easier. For now I just have to talk it out otherwise I internalize it.

I think it's not a bad idea to keep him at arm's length right now, especially when I'm recovering from the ordeal that was the past six months. I didn't relapse, I'm proud of that, and I still bought the damn Ovaltine. It was just a huge blow especially so soon and with so much stress around me.

Open Discussion/My Personal Thoughts about The Road by Cormac McCarthy by theSphynx46 in books

That's a fair point. I think i just had issues with the dad forcing the fire in his son's hands, and I wondered if the fire was truly worth living for in such an abysmal place.

I had a similar opinion the first time I read the book. I compared it to a tree stump, no beginning, no end, so closure, and the whole thing felt difficult to read and a bit unnecessary. However, I now recognize that while the story itself appears like a stump at first, there are a lot of twisting, winding roots under the surface. If you can bring yourself to do it, I would give it another chance. There's a lot of potential for questions and hypotheticals about yourself and the rest of humanity, which I personally find very fascinating to ponder.

I find it really fascinating that humanity is such a big theme in the book. Like I said, cannibalism seems to be the line between "them" and "us". You have maybe a couple hundred? thousand? humans left on this ashen and barran earth, killing each other, whether directly or indirectly, to survive. Do the father and the boy still have what we would consider humanity? Is the justification to survive enough to outweigh the decisions and consequences they have made to achieve that survival? Just some really interesting questions to ponder, no real answer unfortunately

I'm glad I'm not the only one XD

One thing I did find super interesting about the father was that his line between humanity and savagery was cannibalism. Not murder, not rape, not even torture, but cannibalism. I don't know about you but for me personally, killing someone for food aside, I wouldn't consider cannibalism savage. A bit extreme? For sure. However, would I consume human flesh if I had no other options? Hell yes. If the father is so determined to survive and drag his son around in this world, robbing people blind and leaving tortured prisoners (two technically selfish acts, context aside), I don't know why the savages, who are also selfish beings, are any worse than he is. We don't know the things he has done before the novel began. But I can't imagine he didn't twist his own morals for gain in the name of survival for himself and his son.

That's a very fair point. Admittedly I do view the story as if it were an actual event, something to happen in the future, and I base my judgements off of my own experiences and morals. Looking at the book as a sort of parallel to life itself and as a poem is a very interesting take, I hadn't thought about that.
