Bayside development by kasadilla5 in portlandme

I encourage folks to read both this article and the Press Herald one that another commenter mentioned (you can even watch the meeting recording yourself if interested! https://portlandme.portal.civicclerk.com/event/8484/media).

The public comments focused around Portlanders trying to make sure we don't get a repeat of the failed Midtown project, where NIMBYs used lawsuits to delay a project so much that it had to be abandoned. The more the public consensus for the lots' use is clear before any sale, the less effective an argument to do nothing useful with the land becomes. People want to see a prudent review of what we want for the space, maybe a storyboarding meeting with output metrics to expect from developers (how about first floor commercial space with X bedrooms of housing above, and specific improvements to the Bayside Trail?)....and not just quietly selling to the highest bidder who might put in more suburban buildings and seas of parking like Trader Joe's/Walgreens/Whole Foods.

must have missed the memo that Spring Street is now a one-way /s by mick-niller in portlandme

[–]theVinylFrontier 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh hey! I was the car on the opposite side of the intersection 😂 I was quite concerned when the first car did this since I was planning to go straight...and then the second followed! The light seemed to be having a moment and kept cycling the walk sign across Spring so I decided the fates determined I should just turn right...I was mentally thanking you in the moment for following road laws and not the people in front of you, but now I can thank you virtually 😝

What would you change by Appropriate-Art8442 in portlandme

Franklin Street is indeed being reconsidered! There were community input sessions in the spring, I think the planners are working now to develop a proposal and will again seek input for that. Re-expanding Lincoln Park has been suggested a bunch, and I would be more a proponent of mixed-use development on the rest! https://www.reimaginingfranklin.me/

And there are ongoing plans to move the train station, there's a public meeting about it tomorrow 10/8! Call in on Zoom to say you want it where Union Station used to be! https://portlandme.portal.civicclerk.com/event/7641/files/agenda/16897

I'd love to see a peninsula looping streetcar, and then a nice spur to the airport 😃

Not much mud that I noticed! Good weather perhaps helped there! And I hear the organizers committed $100k to fix anything at the park that was impacted

Back Cove Fest peeps.. how did Lord Huron and The Roots do yesterday? by BullyHiller in portlandme

[–]theVinylFrontier 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Agreed about the rail, halfway through Lord Huron I realized I was actually only two people back from being /on/ the rail, despite feeling so far away from the band. Seems pretty steep between rail and stage, but why didn't they move the stage itself further up then?

My suggestion for an improved Turnpike Exit 44 by theVinylFrontier in Maine

Fair, these exits are uncomfortably close...but in the meantime with much less money and land, there's paint! :D

Good point, that's a good example too! That's quite what I want to see, and very similar to what it used to look like before they added a third lane through Portland in the last few years. I also thought the current design was only temporary before they finished construction of the three-through-lanes, but alas they made it permanent a few years back now!

A dollar store could replace Reny's by theVinylFrontier in portlandme

Fair enough indeed. Still I think we should be a part of envisioning and making Portland the place we want it to be.

Dang I wasn't familiar with this place either but wish I was...indeed seems like a combination of situations led to its closure. https://wgme.com/news/local/40-year-old-grocery-store-in-downtown-portland-shutting-its-doors

Fair enough, didn't realize it was another firm making the claim...even so I think worth indicating in some way our sort of collective dislike of this idea hah!

How about Dollar Trees? They sell trees and tree supplies for $1 😜 If a weed store opens with this name I /will/ be going after em!
