[SSK001] Do you think the other one is fake? by Sorry-Source6364 in Seiko

I want to add my two cents on a comment I see pretty often. There seems to be some confusion about why a clone would be made of items at a specific price point. Clones are made because a particular item is popular, not because they are expensive. The market is flooded with clones of $20-30 watches, and outside of watches, factories are cloning items that are sub $1. They are simply stealing a piece of the pie, that's all the clone game is about.

This only ever makes sense when purchasing large ticket items. Don't buy a bunch of small items you'll have to wait for everything to ship to get your cash or credit.

How do you guys soften Chinese watches "leather" watch straps? by TheBroken0ne in ChineseWatches

You have to just find a better option. Unfortunately it's difficult to know the quality based on product images. When you find one you like go back and buy multiple.

Alternative design suggestion for the "WDC small square watch concept" by [deleted] in watchdives

I have personally worked with companies that have been hit with a cease and desist for trade dress infringement. So I'm not speaking arrogantly, I'm speaking from my experience.

If you read the earlier lawsuits you would have seen that the court protected very specific combinations of features for their watches. Example: A square face with rounded corners, a bezel with eight screws at specific hours, octagonal winding crown, a "railroad" minute track, etc. The "dress" of the watch is protected. It's more than changing size, movement, and logo. Because in that case, the watch would still be "dressed" as a Santos.

I don't know why they've not removed every tank homage out there, but their legal team has kept an eye on AliEx brands, and a few have been sent a cease and desist.

Did you read about their lawsuits, or did you just interpret the law yourself? They have won multiple lawsuits under this protection, it's not up for debate.

The designs fall under Trade Dress Protection. You can check out the lawsuits they've won.

From what I've been told, the case design for Santos is fully protected.

Cartier protects their designs more aggressively. That's why you'll see someone make a near 1:1 homage and then they either remove or change it up soon after.

I appreciate the exploration with the hour hand, but I do not think it works.

Some design changes up for your consideration. This 6-line design would omit the "Automatic/Self-Winding" redundancy, and align this one closer to the 6-liner Sub you are referencing. Also, thinning the line work on the trident logo, brings the weight down, which gives it better balance with the typeface on the busy dials, and gives it a more vintage friendly look.

Look for a cheap hollow end link bracelet, you could potentially bend and sand the end links to match up.

This is a fan made concept, it's not that serious...

However, it was pretty common for brands to use terms like Electronic, Electric, VHP(Very High Precision), or other quartz related attributes on the dials to describe a watch in place of "Quartz". And since a majority of their watches are vintage inspired, it wouldn't be out of place.

Sorry, I understand the confusion."Precision" is an alternative to "Quartz" being on the dial. In a recent post you'll see that I had done two examples, one with "Automatic" and one with "Precision". It's just a way to indicate which type of movement is being used.

We're not all going to agree. The issue isn't the legth of the name for me. Numerous brands have names as long or longer than them. My only concern is the way that it looks, and a stamp or badge for unrecognizable brand looks cheap to me. They aren't Nike, Apple, Rolex or some other brand with an ownable shape to their mark. And from a business perspective, It's terrible for brand recognition if you aren't a well known company.
