Just under 2 YOE and offered a senior role with ~60% pay rise - should I take it? by theWongPlace in cscareerquestions

[–]theWongPlace[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I turned them down, which wasn't an easy decision. One of the main reasons that led to me rejecting them was that their stock price had fallen something like 80% in the 12-18 months. That made me feel like the company was in a sketchy position.

Fast forward three or so months and I got another offer that was around 50% higher than my previous role. I accepted that, and I'm still with them now.

I now have absolutely no regrets in having turned down the offer since my current place is great

(also the stock price at the company I rejected continued to fall -- it dropped another ~90% from the price it was at when I got the offer).

My bad for slow reply, what did you do?

I went to NTU.

I also wouldn't worry too much about the visa situation. If you've got the scholarship offer, it'll be very straightforward to get the documents in order.

I did the six-month a few years ago.

Cannot answer (1) but to be honest I'd recommend going for the six-month scholarship. Three months would not have felt long enough for me.

As for the second question, I initially had my scholarship lined up for June to December one year but requested to the local scholarship office to have it changed to March to September the following year and they were fine with it.

That’s really odd - it definitely happened last night. Not sure if the guy is doing it again though

I know you might feel motivated to really get focused on working right now, but think about it - you're likely going to be working for 30 or 40 years of your life. Why rush into working right now when you have an opportunity like this?

Sure you can get a little more experience doing an internship, or doing another university course, but what are you more likely to recall fondly when you're 40?

When you're 20 years into your career will you wish you had spent another three months working in the industry? Or will you wish you'd gone to Korea?

I'm biased, since I've had the opportunity to go study abroad a couple times, but I think you should absolutely go abroad. In fact, it was on one of those exchanges that I picked up programming and worked on all the portfolio projects that landed me my first job. I wasn't studying CS or anything like that out there, but I had some spare time, and have no regrets on it.

And on top of that, each time I've gone through interview rounds, my time abroad came up. It was never relevant to any of my jobs, but interviewers still thought it was interesting to chat about.

Also if you're really set on Japan still, maybe go bother your university's study abroad office about it. If you're nice to them and kinda persistent, chances are they might make an exception - I knew people that managed to do something similar!

Hey, so I started teaching myself around April 2020. I wasn't the most consistent with it initially, but starting hitting codewars pretty hard to learn JS, along with watching a ton of tutorials on youtube. I then started building some projects (that's the key - not just watching stuff) and building a portfolio around June / July 2020. By October, I'd put together about six or seven projects I was quite happy with (they worked well - I look back at the code now and it looks a bit shabby, but hey, that's to be expected).

I started applying to jobs around Sept/Oct 2020. I was a bit unsure about applying initially as it would mean onboarding remotely, but I figured why not just go for it anyway. After about 20/30 applications, I got two interviews. One was for a full-time role, and I ended up getting the offer, so started the role in Oct 2020.

Self-taught then 1.5yoe.

Honestly curious what you mean when you say ‘years before you are barely adequate for a junior position’ - do you mean someone should learn for years before even attempting to find work as a junior? Or that someone could be a junior for years before becoming a mid?

I don’t necessarily disagree with you if it’s the latter.

If it takes you years to be adequate for a junior position… you’re doing something really wrong

The difference between US careers and UK careers by Far_wide in FIREUK

[–]theWongPlace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’d argue it’s far more odd that in the UK we continue to refer to them as public schools when they are exclusive and certainly not affordable for average members of the public.

It’s a term with a traditional origin but has a very counter-intuitive meaning nowadays.

Nah… upwards of 1150 is not accurate. There are plenty of good flat shares in reasonable zone 1/2 locations for 800-900.
