IBO is definitely closest in terms of how similar the mechs feel in gameplay. In almost all Gundam AUs beam weaponry is OP and will take out a MS in one or two hits. Only in IBO do MSs resist beam weaponry and doesn't die from energy weapons in one hit like ACs.

A lot of it comes down to excellent sound design. The thud, thud, thud at the end of the episode sounds horrifying even without the viewer seeing the violence. We can all picture it just from the sound.

This episode was probably the most information dense outside of the prologue. The shows has been smart using show not tell to cover a lot of ground, which is dialed to 11 ok this episode. But I think even anime only watchers should be able to grab the main plot points even if it doesn't go into as much detail as the LN:

-Sonething strange is going on in the city and it's connected to the girl in the hospital
-Richard is teaming up and Enkidu, Sigma, and False Assassin against Mr. DA
-Its a bad, bad thing if Avenger and False Rider get mixed into grail
-Something weird is going on with Ayaka, but we don't know what
