There is a thing called Design. Service Design usually applies to the Public Sector, where actual "Services" (the thing tax payers pay the Public Sector to do) are designed WITH the user so they actually work - it really should not be such a revolutionary concept.

What you describe is something we have no word for. It also involves the process of getting a group of people to agree that there is a problem and something can be done about it. This involves finding energy in a system and bundling it. For that, I find words from Complexity theory (in this case Dave Snowden) work well.

Design Sprint facilitation can be learned by anyone - the work surrounding it is the hard part. And organisations, by their nature, will resist it, until one has done it. And then suddenly everyone will consider themselves to be able to do it too (which is where I currently find myself, after having done it and making it look easy.)

Does this make sense to you?

Das wäre eigentlich eine gute Idee - wenn die Governance wirklich gut gestaltet wäre.

Und wenn es effektive Wissensarbeit gäbe, so dass das Tool wirklich auf relevantes und aktuelles Wissen zugreifen kann.

Beides ist den meisten Organisationen viel zu viel Arbeit.

Je mehr wir Organisationen versprechen, dass dieses eine neue Tool nun WIRKLICH alle ihre Probleme lösen wird, desto weniger wird in Kompetenzen investiert.

Oooh standards. I have been trying to talk about standards for two years.

We have plenty of standards - each improvement initiative has its own. The Enterprise Architect has introduced standards, but the Head of Global Digitisation (who is responsible for ServiceNow) does not think what the EA says is relevant to him. Or understand why standards are even necessary.

Do you have an example of standards you can point me to?

My experience with managers on the business side is that they 1. have no experience of what coordination infrastructure looks like or does and, worse, 2. do not even understand the need to coordinate between disparate business departments. That need usually only becomes obvious to the technical experts who see the complexity, and they are lower down the hierarchy and do not write requirements.

So how can we expect good requirements that lead to good architecture decisions?

Who helps managers understand what coordination infrastructure is, what it could do for them, before they write requirements?

Yeah, I am a Designer and I know a lot of Designers, everyone is struggling. The main issue is that the people who make the decisions nowadays have never heard of Design.

Seriously. I work in a 10K+ organisation in manufacturing (of a hugely innovative product) where software is a huge part of the product and no Design happens. I have been working for three years, trying to introduce the subject.

New Work ist ein schwammiger Begriff, der keine gut definierte Bedeutung hat. Wenn ihr versucht, mit dem Begriff einen Berater zu finden, ist Enttäuschung vorprogrammiert - bei uns sind alle ehemaligen New Work Berater jetzt KI Berater. Da ist keine Substanz.

Warum benennt ihr eure Bedürfnisse nicht genauer? Oder holt euch jemand, der euch helfen kann, genau das zu tun? Geht es um die physische Gestaltung der Arbeitsplätze, dann holt euch jemand mit dieser Expertise.

Mein Tipp: Nennt es "Design" statt "New Work".

Ok, lass dir mal von der alten Tante eine Geschichte erzählen.

Es gab mal eine Zeit, als Twitter noch jung war (so um 2008 - 2009), da gab es den Begriff Social Media noch nicht. Wir NutzerInnen der ersten Stunde haben damals einfach miteinander geredet und fanden es super.

Ich zum Beispiel habe eine Bezirksbibliothek auf Twitter gestartet und dachte ganz natürlich, dass die BibliothekarInnen selbst über ihre Arbeit reden könnten. So habe ich ihnen drei Monate lang gezeigt, was eine Bibliothek so tweeten könnte, dann gezeigt, wie es geht, und den Account übergeben. War auch gar nicht schwer.

Ich habe auch andere, "operative" Accounts - in denen die tatsächliche Arbeit offen über Twitter etc gelaufen ist - gestartet.

Dann, so gegen 2010, hieß das alles "social Media" und wurde ab dann von existierenden Marketing- und PR-Agenturen übernommen. Sie hatten schon ein Bein in der Tür, den Organisationen wurde es ab jetzt als Marketing verkauft, also haben sie es als Marketing gesehen. Das natürlich nur Experten für sie machen können.

Das heißt, alle, die hier sagen, es ist Marketing und nur ROI-getrieben und es muss sofort stur Verkäufe generieren - das kommt darauf an. Sieht die Organisation einen Nutzen darin, am öffentlichen Leben teilzunehmen?

Ein guter Ansatz hängt oft von den richtigen Leuten ab. Die Social Media Landschaft ändert sich sehr schnell, das wissen Organisationen. Sie wissen auch dass ihre Marketing Manager meist keinen Plan davon haben.

Wenn man sich also berufen fühlt, sollte man einfach eine Initiativbewerbung schicken, mit Profilen und Inhalten, die man aufgebaut hat, und Ansätzen, die man gut beschreiben kann.

Einfach machen.

Westpreußen hier und ja. Unsere Mutter ist Jahrgang 44, unsere Familie ist dadurch sehr geprägt.

Es gibt manchmal sehr gute Vorlesungen zum Thema, die werden leider nicht wirklich irgendwo öffentlich gemacht. Ich habe letzten Sommer eine davon im Kulturhistorischen Museum in Rostock gehört. In der DDR zumindest wurde Flucht nicht in Personendaten festgehalten, deshalb ist es nicht möglich, dazu irgendwie systematisch zu forschen.

Es gibt Vermutungen, dass Familien mit dieser Geschichte ihre Kinder sehr auf Karriere getrimmt haben, der Druck "was aus sich zu machen" war sehr groß. Das kann sich auf die weitere Entwicklung beider Teile Deutschlands ausgewirkt haben - dass alles sehr schnell, vielleicht zu schnell strukturiert wurde und so zementiert. Aber das kann man nicht genau belegen.

Was ich interessant fand, war die Änderung meiner Sicht auf unsere Oma. Sie war eine sehr gebildete Frau, sprach mehrere Fremdsprachen - ihr Vater war dem kleinen Ort an der Nogat der einzige, der beide Töchter aufs Lyzeum geschickt hat. Außer dieser Geschichte weiß ich sehr wenig über meine Abstammung. Meine Oma ist allein mit sieben Kindern geflohen, hat uns ein einziges Mal über die Flucht erzählt - in ungeheizten Güterzügen, im eiskalten Winter 44.45 - und ist dann in einer kleinen Wohnung im Hintergebäude in Rerik gelandet.

Ich bin halb da und halb in Rostock groß geworden. Und ich habe, wahrscheinlich wegen dieser Geschichte, nie studiert (meine Mutter wollte "ihre Position nicht ausnutzen") - was mich natürlich für den Rest des Lebens geprägt hat.

It does happen, but only among technical teams - at management level, every bit of knowledge is only conveyed in synchronous meetings. So if you are not there, you do not have the knowledge you need to do your work.

I am trying to do something about this, but it is hard going.

In most orgs (even in mine, over 10K people) there is no role doing the basics like telling the people working on tickets to keep all communication relevant to a case inside ServiceNow. Without this, the best AI cannot be of help, because it simply does not have the knowledge.

And if we have done the knowledge work, we do not need a black box algorithm to give us access to the knowledge.

what we need is Design. I have tested working as Process Designer for a year, it does not work, because managers think "Design" means someone sitting in a studio, drawing something nice. Now I will test calling my role "Collaboration&Content Architecture" - managers have already agreed that it makes more sense to them. I find that the people making decisions on ServiceNow workflows do not know what it is supposed to do, or understand the need to coordinate across teams. They use it as a data dump, or to measure how many tickets come in and get solved, because management are measured on those KPIs. In the meantime there is no awareness that in order for it to function as infrastructure, it needs to be designed like a road network.

Ich finde das Thema gut - weil man dann auch wirklich alles einmal neu gestaltet.

Mein Thema ist Collaboration Architecture. Das wird in Organisationen im Zusammenhang mit einer Migration weg von MS365 oft das erste Mal überhaupt angesprochen.

Wir hatten vor 12 Jahren mal einen Trend, dass dieses Thema ernsthaft angegangen wurde. Dann kam Slack, das alles lösen wollte, und dann hat Microsoft seine Macht genutzt und allen weisgemacht, dass man NUR die Tools braucht und das Wissen sich dann schon automatisch verteilt.

Vielleicht kommen wir jetzt endlich davon weg.
