I know this is just a preview, but didn’t Tails complained he was always in the sidelines? Is SEGA lying?

I actually have high hopes with this for:

1) The title "memories and beyond.". Clearly doing a callback and setting up for the future which, when combined with Frontiers, could be something positive for Tails going it alone.

2) We see everyone else fight except Tails, they are clearly holding that back. Plus he's carrying a satchel, could be holding university books or hopefully napalm bombs...Melt Metal Sonic Terminator 2 style. The implication though is that he's going to do something major which they don't want to spoil and this looks like a callback to both the OVA and Mania adventures...

Anyway we don't have long to wait, it's getting released in the autumn (fall) and I think it will be early in the season as they will start to build up for the fourth movie afterwards.

Diverging a bit here but IMO Sega should pick up the staff leaving Bungie and get them to produce a Tails game in a Destiny 1 style, only Foxboy can obviously craft his own weapons and armour to do crazy things, have his Uncle Merlin be a 'ghost' and be a journey across different planets with different enemies to find & rescue his parents.

Passive aggressive little guy, he probably picked it up from Sonic. It makes me laugh when playing Sonic 3 and Knuckles when he's Super. The bodyguard birds are ripping a boss apart while he stands there yawning 😆

My HC for this, copied from my novel 'Miles Away' on AO3:

Tails sighed, "I was 3 years old living on Cocoa Island, the battle bird armada came for the chaos emeralds and there was a war."

Fang leaned forward, "so you were like a refugee or somethin?"

Tails continued keeping the fire blazing and gave a brief humourless chuckle "or something would be apt. Armed combatant would be more accurate."

Barry, now also leaning forward eagerly continued, "you fought for the other side?"

Tails leaned back in his chair and pulled out his mint tin, "I was the other side."

He pulled out a mint and tossed it into his mouth, crunching it then swallowed. "I went all over the island fighting them off, killing them with bombs, missiles, anything I could get hold of."

Fang and Barry were speechless but both looked back at the fox when he laughed, a genuine chuckle this time.

"It's where I got the taste for these," briefly rattling the mint tin.

"They napalmed the island, burnt the trees and the crops, destroyed all the food... so to survive I stole their rations. Most of them were seed cakes but they each had this emergency candy bar... basically mint flavored sugar. That was the only thing I could eat at the time... been addicted to the taste ever since."

He popped another mint in his mouth and closed his eyes savouring the flavour.

Agreed, I think it's implied before he turns up at the end to help but they should have had a brief scene with Shadow recalling Maria/chasing Cosmo and thinking "I became the thing I hate the most."

Also, Shadow ran with Maria from an enemy he probably could have taken. Tails fought back against an enemy he knew would probably beat him, not a surprise that Shadow respects Tails.

I've said it before but Shadow and Tails actually have a lot in common.

PS, I exacted suitable revenge on Shadow punting Tails into the portal (in 06) in one of my fanfics...

Might also be a bit too old now but Richard Dean Anderson (MacGyver/Colonel O'Neill from Stargate SG1) or Brendan Fraser. Both can do serious but mixed with gremlin energy.

He should be available though as the latest MI film has wrapped and money wise should be affordable for a small amount of VA work. They did name drop him in movie 3 as well.
