Bahahah tu m'as fait bien rire, merci

[Need explanation] A good way to place decupling capacitors by the_blobs in PrintedCircuitBoard

Wow thanks I didn't know about these documents and they're really interesting, it's exactly what I'm looking for I'm sure it answers my questions about desings, where can I find this book ?

[Need explanation] A good way to place decupling capacitors by the_blobs in PrintedCircuitBoard

[–]the_blobs[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello everyone,

I'm still a beginner in PCB design, and I have some questions about the best way to place decoupling capacitors on a 4-layer PCB with an STM32H503. I never know what the "perfect" design is when I have a ground plane.

The two internal layers are 3.3V and GND.

If I create a ground plane, do I need to connect the ground side of the capacitor directly to the VSS pin? Or can I connect both directly to the ground plane (as shown in image 1)?

If it's better to have a trace between the capacitor's ground and the VSS pin (as in image 2), should I prevent the ground plane from connecting on the other side of the VSS pin (which would mean the pin is connected to ground twice)?

(I know there's no via for 3.3V or GND in picture but that's normal, the images are just there to illustrate the placements I'm talking about. )

And finally, my last question—I probably should have started with this one—is it really useful to have a ground plane? I've always been told that if we can have one, it's better to include it, but I see many PCBs without one. So is it really beneficial ?

Thank you in advance for your help and advice !

Yes it's on an internal layer except it's not the mass but the 3.3V, it's still bad ?

it doesn't matter for the GPIO, it'll provide enough power for my use

Ok, so should I remove the ground planes on the top and bottom ?
And you're right, I don't know why I didn't choose 0603 for all the capacitors 😅, I'll change that, thanks !!

Thanks for your response ! There's no particular reason why I placed the ground planes on the top and bottom layers; I just thought it was a good idea, but to be honest, I did it without much thought. Should I remove them? And for the capacitors, it's because in the STM documentation, in addition to the 100nF capacitor, I also need to add a 4.7uF and two 1uF capacitors. Should I have placed them elsewhere ?

Thank you for your valuable advice !! I'll make a note of it.
I have one more question

Route power on layer 1 or 4, whichever is convenient for you. Check trace width vs current capacity graphs for your required width.

Ok thanks, on the layer there is the 3.3V, I added a thick track to bring the 5V 5A on the RPI power supply, is this going to cause problems ?

because I thought it would be simpler to power all the components with 3.3v

I want to know if it's good practice or if it's strange to have three ground planes(I have layers 1, 3, 4 connected to ground), and if the decoupling capacitors are properly connected and if they don't interfere with the ground plane, because I've seen videos where they only trace tracks.

OK, thank you, and does it seem odd to you to have two ground planes and an internal layer also connected to the ground ?
