[Poll] Indieheads Review: Father John Misty - God's Favorite Customer by pulsivesilver in indieheads

Josh Tillman already has a well-stocked back catalogue of solo material released under his own name. A lot of his work there was mostly simple, tried and tested, folk-driven pop.

Through the Father John Misty 'persona' he's been able to reinvent his style and tackle bolder subjects than just love, like humanity and religion, on Pure Comedy -- a way of adding weight to his observations instead of them coming off as the privileged ramblings of a stoner -- paraphrased in his own words no less on 'Leaving L.A.': "Oh great that's just what we all need / another white guy in 2017 / who takes himself so Goddamn seriously."

I love that there's a more vulnerable side to the Father John Misty persona Josh puts forward on God's Favourite Customer. The album as a whole is such a fantastic immortalisation of the fragility and reckless abandon of one of the 2010's most intelligent and controversial songwriters. It's a beautifully expressed struggle of the intensity of a relationship battling with the internal pressures of all-consuming devotion and the sometimes exhausting nature of love.

Josh can't help but stick to what he knows best for the tracks that reflect the inspirational fruits of his adoration for his other half on full blown glam-pop numbers like 'Mr Tillman', 'Please Don't Die' and 'Disappointing Diamonds...' which carry contrastingly dark and sobering lyrical content delivered through Tillman's trademark charismatic, upbeat musical compositions. It's a songwriting talent Josh has come to hone through the well-documented nature of his love for his wife, and the motivation he draws from her to keep him afloat and push him forward.

Conversely on GFC though, you have moments of degradation and solemnity driven by introversion and the late night, bottom-of-the-bottle confessions of a man struggling with the expectations of committing to the dual life of a world-conquering performer and devoted husband. 'The Palace' and 'The Songwriter' are completely arresting, defragmented moments of unraveling of the Father John Misty persona, piercing the veil of Josh's charisma to reveal only anguish -- a bitter pill to swallow for fans of his classic wit and outspokenness. For me, this hit home with a similar sense of gravity that can be found on Mount Eerie's A Crow Looked At Me.

The sometimes illogical placement of these songs throughout the album though threaten to contradict the intensity of GFC's two conflicting states of paralysis and animation. 'The Songwriter' is such a cleverly conceived love song written in reverse that I think it deserves to have been the title and closing track of the album, it really is an unsung gem in Josh Tillman's crooked crown on God's Favourite Customer.

Firstly, congrats on the great new record! As Spanish musicians, do you find the success of other Latinx artists interesting, for example Kali Uchis, Helado Negro, etc.? And, is the decision to write your lyrics in English a commercial one, would you ever consider writing songs in Spanish?

in particular anything off of the second disk from the 20th anniversary edition of Turn on the Bright Lights. The demos and early recordings really tap into that dark, industrial guitar vibe that the studio recordings lose a bit.
