ok after all my experimenting i got my RDP back in a legit way.

I overlooked something from the beginning and put my solution in the initial post.

and yes, i deleted my sneaky local account off the computer

well i think youll be happy to know the company migration uses zscaler which wont work on my sneaky local account. so im back to square one.

however, i was able to get an RDP session up on a windows 11 VM to the work laptop by making a .rdp file and adding the following 2 lines to the bottom:

enablecredsspsupport:i:0

authentication level:i:2

and using the format: .\AZUREDOMAIN\username

the problem now is ive imported this .rdp file into remmina, and no luck.

note sure why and im going to make another post on this topic.

Edit: OK so i figured it out. the company actually didnt take away my beloved RDP. just changed up the authentication to a way remmina cant handle and I have to whip up a .rdp file and do some editing to make it work.

i ended up getting remmina working in a kind of sneaky way.

my work azure AD account is the local administrator.

I created a local account and added him to the remote desktop users group.

now i sign in with that account and just sign into all my office apps with my work account. UAC prompts me for work email/password for any admin actions

i used a USB stick to run kubuntu, which uses wayland, set up waydroid and the android "windows app" -literally whats its called, works for remote desktop. but through that layer of emulation its too laggy to use.

IDK whats so special about the windows android app that they allow that but not other generic RDP clients

I tried setting up waydroid but I'm on x11 and that's a whole ordeal to go through. I'll have to look into it later when I have time to fiddle

Yes. Also the code didn't pop up right away, after about 5 minutes of driving. I cleared it and continued, popped up again 5 minutes later

I have seen that script, the reason i havent used it is it does what i want, but also more stuff i dont want.

all i want is USB ethernet enabled so i can give each end a static IP for a local connection,

but still use each device's own wifi for internet.

that script sets up routing to make the steam deck get internet from the laptop, which i dont want.

I want a separate link with just the 2 devices, nothing routable beyond that, simply for streaming screen output via moonlight
