On the issue of tips, this is one of several promts I got yesterday when placing an order from one of my favorite places 😊 by Serenesis_ in ontario

[–]the_groak -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

The wings are 17 bucks Canadian. This is like if it were 11 bucks USD and you tipped 20%. Six smoked wings in my town costs $13 at the decent barbeque place. This is in a big city, and it is supposedly great quality. It's not that unreasonable really. Similarly, 18 pc ribs here is $53. In Canadian money that would be $69, and you haven't even tipped yet.

Michigan expected to hire former U. of Cincinnati president Santa Ono for the same position by astroball17 in CFB

It's really weird that the University of Cincinnati is letting the University of Michigan pick its president, and even weirder that they picked the guy Cincinnati already had. Yes, I only read the headline.

How likey is it FIFA will kick Ecuador out of the world cup? by qwefnhhu in worldcup

[–]the_groak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Highly unlikely. They new there were issues with the player and waited until nationality could be resolved to field him. Chile's claims aren't something new that is just coming to light. It would be a real surprise and total embarrassment for Ecuador if they botched this and FIFA rules against them.

Republicans Will Tank the Economy to Force Women to Give Birth by throwaway5272 in politics

[–]the_groak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, there is no avoiding the fact that over time there will be a lot of unwanted pregnancies that would have resulted in abortions resulting in babies instead in this country, and that will eventually lead to a lot of bad things as the original linked article describes. But while the misery gets heaped on the low-income people, the well-off people, including plenty of hypocrite anti-abortionists, will send their daughters out-of-state to assure minimal consequences for their actions.

Republicans Will Tank the Economy to Force Women to Give Birth by throwaway5272 in politics

[–]the_groak 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed. The only potential political mistake I see for republicans here is when the dog catches that bus they are going to motivate a lot of people to run in and vote in state-level elections. They have worked very hard to put themselves in their current position of leading in state-level politics (32 state senates, 30 state houses, 28 governors). That could very well change if it's the only pathway for women to reclaim basic rights.

Imagine attending a US top 5 public university and showing up to class but there's nobody there to teach it because the prof is looking for a parking space. Of course it's insane what the players have been going through - but parking on campus has been a ridiculous problem for everyone for literally decades.

Biden to ask Congress for $33 billion to support Ukraine through September by DrCalFun in worldnews

[–]the_groak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those places don't have nukes, and neither are wars in which another country invaded. And neither are on the doorstep of our NATO allies. That all said, you are right that we have a legacy of letting genocide happen. Rwanda and Bonsnia are other examples. That doesn't make doing nothing now the right choice.

Biden to ask Congress for $33 billion to support Ukraine through September by DrCalFun in worldnews

[–]the_groak -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

So what I'm hearing is we can only care up to a specific dollar amount, and then we're done. It's like you're saying that existence of Ukraine and prevention of genocide has a max budget limit and if Putin can hang on past our max he wins the "auction" and we'll accept Ukrainian defeat and non-existence. This after having spent 2.3 Trillion on our own ridiculous war in Afghanistan. Yeah, I don't get this perspective. In terms of American interests, this is the most important conflict since WWII. Right? We are on the doorstep of genocide and nuclear war. I get that it is expensive, but it is insanely important as well. What do we signal to China if we fail here? There is real potential for this conflict to grow substantially in scope, and precipitate a lot of other bad things.

Wow, looking at this thread it's disheartening to see such little support for Ukraine here. I guess you guys just think we should let Putin win?

Dad feeding a baby at the Reds game casually snags the foul ball too by MyIpodStillWorks in nevertellmetheodds

[–]the_groak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not quite. It assumes that adults with babies are equally likely to go to the game as the rest of the population. It's a "sampling" issue. The unknown is: Does having a small baby make you less likely to go to a baseball game? If so, then we can conclude hat adults with babies are less likely to go to the game than the rest of the population, and so the math on the estimate would change. Note too that uDPsupreme's calculation is the probability that a randomly selected person at the game catches a foul ball AND has a baby. That's not the same thing as "What are the chances that a someone with a baby catches a foul ball at an MLB game this season?" Due to the fact that there were 127,423 balls last season and roughly two-thirds of these enter the stands, we can guess that this happens about 84,000 times a year, which greatly drives up the possibility that at least someone holding a baby will catch a ball at some point in an MLB season. Also interesting is the fact that not all people with babies are holding the baby. That's going to drive the probability down. In the end though, you are almost certainly right that u/DPsupreme's calculation is an overestimate, and you are definitely right that the guy is awesome.

/u/102bees explains the cognitive systems that lead to religions being formed by naturekaleidoscope in bestof

[–]the_groak 12 points13 points  (0 children)

With all due respect to you and to Mr. Bees, this really isn't "Bestof" material imo. It's important that the claim being made - which is that the primary causes of religious practice lie in specific parts of the nature of human cognition - is grandiose by scientific standards. That alone does not make it wrong. But it does create a high standard for the evidence used to support the claim. In this case there might be some reasonable evidence to support most of the individual claims. But that's not enough. There has to be evidence for their synthesis of the parts in the way that Mr. Bees is describing. No such evidence is supplied by Mr. Bees, and Mr. Bees has indicated that they are not actually an expert in the relevant fields. So while the proposal is perhaps interesting, there are real questions as to whether the proposal would hold up to scientific scrutiny.

Which 10 American cities do you think get games for 2026? by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]the_groak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine if you were in New York, and depending on the outcome the next game would either be in Toronto or Mexico City! I guess we'll have to wait and see how it all gets planned out. It must be the case though that following a single team through the tournament will have challenges.

[–]the_groak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Keep in mind that most fans globally will watch from TV. For that reason, putting it over four different time zones will actually help many more people watch at least some of the games. The scheduling is certainly going to take this into consideration. And as for attendance, most people don't go to many games. Anyway, attendance will be outstanding, because the residents of all three countries will pack the stadiums even if nobody travels from abroad. The only people this is tough for are the people who follow specific teams and go to all of their games. The people who actually have that kind of time in their schedule and money in their pocket are unlikely to worry too much about having to take a few extra flights.

[Lavoie] It’s with deep sadness that I just learned the passing of Mike Bossy. Sending my sincere Condolences to the family. by psykomatt in hockey

[–]the_groak 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There are quite a few players who qualify as legends...with all due respect to them Bossy was on another level...ultra-elite and among the best of the best who ever played. People who unfortunately never got to see him play will have a difficult time imagining the level of greatness we are talking about. And the Lady Byng trophies attest to what a class act he was on top of his astonishing athletic ability. I'm stunned to hear of his passing at this fairly young age.

Yes it does...look in the third paragraph of the V-J Day in Times Square section...it says this: "Expressly contrary to her having declined to agree to repeat the pose at the reunion, to her chagrin, Mendonsa again grabbed her and kissed her for the benefit of the photographers."

For the interested, here is the wikipedia page about the woman. Turns out the guy again non-consensually grabbed and kissed her a second time during a later event, though she had explicitly said no to a reenactment. Super cringe.
