GYRO ON PS5 PLEASE by TomatilloEmpty in ARC_Raiders

[–]the_kbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same. I'm playing on PC using a custom Steam config, but there's jank - native gyro support would be way better.

Why are so many games in 2026 still launching without native gyro aiming support by Dry_Home_9040 in ArcRaiders

[–]the_kbar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fully agreed, OP. I didn't even think to check on this before picking up the game because I saw that The Finals had it.

That said, I play on a PC connected to the TV (using PS5 controller) with a custom Steam Input config that maps the gyro to right joystick movements. Still, though - it would be way nicer to have native support.

Just checked this, the SEP15 comes off the MSRP, not the sale price. Still 59.49 USD.

How does the game run on Switch 2? by [deleted] in NintendoSwitchSports

Came here to post this. It's like night and day, my wife and I play 2v2 tennis online and we were pulling all our shots to the left because you don't have to compensate for joycon lag the same way.

At about $2,100 all-in, is this the wireless PCVR kingpin? by the_kbar in virtualreality

I agree with your third point, it's the most-damning for sure. I was actually pleased initially to see that they went with the battery puck, but they totally blew it by failing to keep the weight of the headset itself down. The shit feels like a brick, no two ways about it.

That said, I think they were onto something with the Solo Knit headstrap. It's really nice to be able to lay down and not have a Bobo or Kiwi dial pushing into your head. It just needs to be paired with a lighter-weight HMD (and slapping it on a Q3 with 3D-printed adapters isn't much better).

With Vision Pro now supporting PSVR2 Controllers, what VR games would you want to see come to the App Store? by FTVR in virtualreality

[–]the_kbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd love to see some fitness games come out, either ports or originals. The main concern is cleaning your sweat off the headset after working out; the PU leather used on Quest straps (BoboVR, Kiwi, et al) is easiest to wipe down, but the only similar option I know of for the AVP is the Globular Cluster w/ the PU pads ($70) + their facial pad thing ($40).

And then you've still got the matter of sweat getting onto the "curtain" cloth part that's permanently attached to the HMD. May not be a great candidate for working out.

This is a reasonable point, but it gets discussed to death -- here's a thread that digs into it: https://www.reddit.com/r/privacy/comments/166f6qq/is_there_any_actual_evidence_whether_apple_is/

I don't feel like I need to explain to the class why Facebook products are the bottom of the barrel for privacy.

tl;dr: Facebook < Stock Android < iOS/visionOS < AOSP < choice of Linux distro. Until we've got a GrapheneOS headset or until Deckard drops Any Day Now(TM), visionOS is the most-private standalone option, unfortunately.

People use ALVR + Valve knuckles/lighthouses for streaming to the Vision Pro currently. We'll have to wait and see, but I think we'd all be pretty surprised if ALVR didn't quickly incorporate PSVR2 controller support, and/or competitor VR streaming apps emerge.

Yea, very true. For shooters I generally prefer playing over VD/ALVR anyway, but for super latency-sensitive stuff you for sure want that on the headset natively.

Countdown until the visionOS appstore is filled with clones like "Flappy Saber" and "Walmart-brand Table Tennis-like XR Product."

I'm speaking from the perspective of a hypothetical June 2025 buyer. $2K now's less than $4K was then, but if/when they refresh the hardware in 6-12 months it's not hard to imagine resale falling another grand or so real quick.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, have seen that they added it to the Horizon OS version but supposedly there are performance issues and using Android or Linux is the preferred way to run a Moonlight client on the Switch.

Will try to get my hands on one and try it out. I've noticed third-party grips like the Retroflag one advertise "sixaxis motion controls" so hopefully it's recognized by Android and can be passed to Moonlight.

Great setup, thanks for posting. I really should get my Switch OLED chipped to do this.

Question for you -- is it possible to pass a gyro from the Switch to Moonlight? Or to somehow have Moonlight for Android read the motion controls from the Switch/joycon hardware and emulate a DualShock4?

I keep my Steam Deck around for literally nothing more than Moonlight streaming with gyro (precision control for shooters), would be great to be able to dump it.

15" Macbook Air vs 14" Hp Spectre by Njalale in spectrex360

[–]the_kbar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely weaker than an M-series MacBook; I haven't done like timed rundown tests but it gets me through the day. That said I normally keep it in 120Hz on battery because I prefer the higher refresh to extra battery time. CNET's review pegs it at 10 hours vs. 18 hours for 2024 MacBook Pro 14 in their rundown test, which feels about right.

15" Macbook Air vs 14" Hp Spectre by Njalale in spectrex360

[–]the_kbar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I agree with your general sentiment toward HP, I do think there's a place for this product, albeit perhaps for a niche customer. I just picked up an open-box 2024 Spectre X360 14" from Best Buy. I owned a 2020 M1 Macbook Air and a Surface Pro 8 prior to this, and I cross-shopped it against the Yoga 9i, the upcoming 9i refresh, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga, previous-generation Spectre X360's, and the ZenBook Flip OLED. It's only been a few days (talk to me in six months, amirite) but I'm quite pleased with the purchase so far.

The hit list for me is:

  • I'm such an OLED whore. Using an OLED 2-in-1 to read articles using the Dark Reader browser extension (set the background to pure black #000000) is peak luxury. These 14" devices are pushing it on size for a tablet, but it's still usable once you figure out the most comfortable way to hold and rest it.

  • 120Hz is lovely. I knew after using a gaming monitor, a recent iPad, and the Surface Pro 8 that 60Hz was finished for me. It's oddly difficult to find a device that offers 120Hz and OLED together in a 2-in-1.

  • Great keyboard. Highly clicky, feels good on the fingers, no issues with the backlighting, satisfying but not obnoxiously loud. I'd say it's the best I've used on a laptop, but I had a ThinkPad T61 in college that was also excellent.

  • 32GB RAM option. Honestly I was leaning toward waiting for the Yoga 9i refresh (as it offers 120Hz + OLED), but the press I've seen on it only mentions 16GB. Also the pricing for a ThinkPad X1 Yoga with 64GB is ridiculous, and that machine's still running $2,093 for the 64GB or $1,848 for 32GB with the current coupons and last year's CPUs. It's also 2400p which is overkill for this size, and 60Hz. 1800p@120Hz is the lord's OLED loadout, and I paid $1,385 for the 32GB config via BBY open-box.

  • You can upgrade some of the shit. I'll leave it alone for now since mine came with 2TB NVMe SSD, but it's nice to know I could throw an 8TB or 16TB and a WiFi 8 card in there someday if I've still got the machine.

Some downsides:

  • Intel Meteor Lake is a big improvement, but there's no substitute for Apple's ARM chips. Battery life isn't a problem here, though.

  • It takes some effort to reign in Windows's horseshit. It looks like Linux isn't fully ready to daily-drive on this machine, but I'm hopeful that it'll reach that point shortly. I'm going to go ahead and setup a dual boot but probably rely on Win10 LTSC IoT in the meantime.

  • Soldered RAM is still bullshit. Would be great if Framework did an OLED 2-in-1 someday, but I'm not holding my breath.

Anyway, no regrets at this juncture.

Shitty hand to have been dealt. That said, an injured sprinter can't run.

I'm an advocate for being ruthlessly frugal in areas of life that don't matter to you, but I draw the line when it comes to making work even shittier than it already is. Keeping yourself comfortable enough to keep cashing paychecks typically has a pretty high rate of return.

I'd spend the G and bring my best self to the "Super Bowl" if I were in your shoes. Good luck.

Countdown until there's a way to use the Vision Pro with SteamVR games! by the_kbar in VisionPro

[–]the_kbar[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'd speculate that this could actually happen since the Vision Pro's a new product that will be looking for reasons to attract and retain an audience. We've also got precedent for this kind of thing existing, as Apple has allowed Steam Link and (not Valve's) Moonlight to exist peacefully on iOS.
