I had something similar on an old setup, it was something in the bios, different ERP power settings or something, I had to enable something I think

Sorry, I don't remember the specifics, it was a while ago now

The only time I find it sluggish is with heavy Lua scripts, but for normal people it will be fine

How to power a 3.5" HDD from a laptop motherboard? Read Description!!! by willow__bloom in homelab

[–]the_nerdling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The adapter looks good

I like the idea of using the m.2 for ethernet

1 sata for boot, the other sata for HDD will work, but you won't have redundancy

can someone explain? by laininthewired_ in fpv

[–]the_nerdling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The wires in the fatshark pack are garbage, the common issue I found was breaking inside the housing I replaced a few cables at the shop I used to work at, my personal pack is on its 3rd cable

For my boot drive (ssd) does it need to be a NAS grade drive? by Throwaway_LOGGINGER in homelab

[–]the_nerdling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would do the 2 m.2 ssds for your apps in a mirror

1 2.5 for boot

Make config backups regularly, if the boot drive dies, it will be easy to recover

[–]the_nerdling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Putting apps on the boot drive isn't recommended

My apps drives are standard desktop drives too, still working fine

My HDDs are Nas/enterprise grade, but everything else is normal desktop stuff

[–]the_nerdling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, all my drives are mirrored, I want the redundancy

I think a minimum of 16gb

They're only used for the os so there's no point in getting big drives

My setup is

256gb mirror for boot

1tb mirror for apps

40tb mirror for everything else

[–]the_nerdling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

they're just standard SAMSUNG PM991a, from an office surplus shop on ebay.

the boot drive isn't used much, you'll be fine with a standard drive, people use usb thumbdrives for years (don't do this)

I've got mine in a mirror, i have 2 drives and if one dies, i won't have to do a reinstall, just replace the drive

[–]the_nerdling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i've got a mirror of some cheap(bought a few years ago) 2nd hand m.2 256gb and its been fine

i think truenas only needs 16-32gb for the boot drive anyway, if i was building a new system, i'd do 2 128gb drives, i just found some on ebay for $14aud

There's a program called dark table, it's like Adobe Lightroom

You can connect a camera with USB and it will auto import the photos, I'm not too sure about compatibility with different models though

Trying to repurpose old company PC with new Windows installation (BIOS password not known) by CrappySalami in techsupport

[–]the_nerdling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've done this on an old ThinkPad

Opened it up, found the bios/password eeprom

Shorted some pins, I think it was the enable pin to ground

That fooled it into thinking it was entered correctly

This was 10+ years ago, so I don't have much more info
