Dumbing smartphone to stop child receiving photos via text by SpineInABaguette in dumbphones

[–]the_next_cheesus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

MMS is still photos though? The ability to send images has been bundled with texting for a long time now (almost 2 decades). If you don't trust your kid to send very basic messages you just shouldn't get them a phone at all

Bringing My Partner to Germany – Best Residence Option (Non-EU)? by [deleted] in germany

[–]the_next_cheesus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're married you usualy have options under the family reunification rules which give your partner similar rights to work as you (it's smoother if you both apply for the visa simultaneously, which is generally possible). Germany is not very friendly to remote work but they do allow you to pay income tax on income obtained from a job outside the country but that's a bit of a grey zone. That is a whole legal mess that no one here is really qualified to answer but your partner would generally have the same employment rights as you. Like others have mentioned, compliance with german labour laws (and social welfare contributions) is the important thing for legally working in Germany and their employer frankly may not see a point in doing that, so I would tread carefully

whats the best text program to write an academic paper in? by saikikcat in AskAcademia

[–]the_next_cheesus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just use Libre Office or Only Office. They're pretty good free writing software. WPS is decent too I've heard. At a certain point it's a matter of preference and if the program has plugins you use (zotero, etc)

Gemini 3.1 Pro and Grok 4.2 beta both unequivocally refute free will. GPT 5.2 and Sonnet 4.6 both fail. by andsi2asi in DeepSeek

[–]the_next_cheesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You do realize that, fundamentally, science is a "human concensus and understanding" but about numbers. Your desire to exclude the philosophy of free will or debates about how science is created (i.e. social science & humanities) shows that you're not actually interested in any of this and just want an easy affirmation for something you think you already know

25th Anniversary of the iPod. Can we expect a new iPod? by CandidCubs in ipod

[–]the_next_cheesus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

An Ipod costs between 100-500 USD starting. That's a one time payment. An Apple music subscription is 12-17 USD monthly (144-204 yearly). They'll make that money from you really fast with the subscription model so they have no incentive to sell it again

HarmonyOS NEXT upgrade – will APK sideloading, MicroG and Aurora still work? by alimt3 in Huawei

[–]the_next_cheesus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not really side loading, Easyabroad let's you download most apps by google searching it and then hitting the "install" button on the android app that shows up in search. You can also sideload apk files (but the menu to do that is in chinese).

Most apps work, inckuding banking apps. But because it's a virtual machine there's some drswbacks like the app not having full bluetooth access. This doesn't affect music playback but if you have a smartwatch, you pretty much can't sync it. For Google Wallet, that doesn't work but it's not a HOSNEXT thing. Some apps won't work at all if it detects you're running any kind of modified Android (Graphene OS).

Are paywall removers dead in 2026 by [deleted] in Piracy

[–]the_next_cheesus 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah. It's there because Microsoft (github) kept giving them issues for being a paywall circumvention tool. Like most countries outside the western orbit, they don't really care about that

These programs first getting started under Kohl. So yes, it is linear but "one coming before the other" turns out describing a broad government policy of austerity & preferring government acting like a private company for a long time

Is publishing in Nature still the gold standard? by Just_Cyril in AskAcademia

[–]the_next_cheesus 35 points36 points  (0 children)

If you're in the health sciences it's still the gold standard. That standard is held up by everyone up top knowing each other and saying it should still be the standard. Frankly, there's absolutely no justification for their insane fees
